Her streaming numbers on Spotify could be better, but as I said they were doubled in the past year, after she verified her account. It was a mess before that. On YouTube her most popular songs aren't even available (That's The Way Love Goes, All For You, Together Again, I Get Lonely...) they are keep on deleting those. So I'm not even counting that. British radio is playing "The Best Things In Life Are Free" more than any Madonna song (that's official). For instance, in the past 30 days, they played Janet 556 times on British radio, Kylie Minogue 492 times, Mariah Carey 420 times, Sade 212 times, Celine Dion 140 times... And that's not even her main market. Too much drama for nothing.

Why do you think Janet doesn't care about her career? Is she suffering from depression again? I seriously think she is depressed and not happy.

No. I just think that she realised how pointless popularity is. It's really not important. "The Great Forever" is about it. There are more important things in life that have much more sense. She was in the spotlight since the early age, I think that she had it enough for several lives and that she don't want to waste the second half of her life on that. Despite that, I don't even care about hits and commercial success that much. Artistry was always more important. Only artistry and impact can make you legendary, not your commercial success. Records are set to be broken, artistic achievement is there to make you immortal. Janet's legacy is cemented in many albums, not only hers.

Either the fan who made this chart mixed up Back to Black and Lemonade's scores, or Pitchfork's opinions are shit and don't matter. The two Janet scores are accurate though. Miam and RH can switch too! biggrin

Popularity for legends doesn't matter all too much but we are not talking about that. We are talking about her lack of investment in her legacy and future career projects. There are veterans older than her that still give back to their fans and still release collector editions but Janet doesn't seem to invest in her classics and back catalog. (You don't have to be popular or relevant to do this) She also seems all over the place it terms of where she wants to go with her career. I personally don't think she has reached the "Great Forever" because her actions do not reflect that. I agree with you on everything else. ARTISTRY and IMPACT is what makes you a legend and immortal. However, I just get a feeling Janet is suffering from depression for some reason. I dont think she is happy in terms of her career. Does Janet seems happy to you? Even in recent photos she doesn't seem happy.

Tracy Chapman had the number one album of the 80s?! Yeah, right. Good album but the best? No way.

Careerwise,Janet's main problem these days is her inability to complete a concert tour. She is a veteran artist now.No music that she releases is gonna get massive airplay or huge sales.Touring is the one thing that veteran artists can do to make money and remain relevant but Janet has messed this up.As a touring artist, she doesn't have a lot of credibility.Does anyone truly believe that she is gonna continue her Unbreakable tour and make up all the dates she cancelled last year? lol

Janet Jackson hasn't been blacklisted by anyone. Unbreakble did close to 254,000 copies and for an independent artist that's pretty damn good! Janet's focus is elsewhere; she wanted to be a mother and a wife and that's what she's doing. Let it be.

I almost agree too.

I don't know anything about her failure to honor committments, but listen: you don't see Paul
McCartney setting the pop world on fire anymore with his new releases, do ya? And he was a
Beatle! What happened to him is what is happening to Janet Jackson - we've a new generation
of stars that have come into play as opposed to some conspiracy to purposefully derail her
career.

nod

With the marriage and baby etc going on knowing her I doubt she will continue Unbreakable and just move on to the next thing. At this time she should start some type of processes for some deluxe editions of several of her most successful albums. Could bring in some extra revenue during this downtime. I know that takes record comany approvals etc...but it can be done.

See? All of sudden some of you think that she's OVERRATED. She is also the only female artist with three albums on recent SPIN list of 100 best albums in the past 30 years! Janet is one of the most respected artists alive! Her albums are still getting great reviews by the most respected magazines, being included on their year-end lists, debuting at No. 1 and outselling 20 years younger pop stars. 97% of artists from the 80s or even 90s can only dream about that now. All this drama was started by some fans who were pissed off cause she wasn't mentioned in some Billboard article about the best performances at Awards Shows. So stupid. Janet will be topping the Billboard Hot 100 even in the next decade, and set new record as the only artist with No. 1 albums in the past 5 decades. We don't have global data but let's compare numbers in America. Unbreakable sold better than last albums by Mariah Carey, Madonna, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Lana Del Ray, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars... The list is long. All of these artists were promoting a lot, Janet didn't promote at all. Not a one single interview or TV performance. She's more than fine and doing it as an independent artist, effortlessly and with dignity. I don't know what some of you expect from a 50 year old pop star.

She's not blacklisted. She's just not relevent anymore, and outside of the US, she never made the 'A List'.

This site slights the Jacksons in general dont pay that any mind. She is underrated and these orgers only say she is not because they don't like her. Look at the pattern and then these same individuals turn around and fawn over artists that are actually overrated. neutral

Exactly...but I mean this isn't rocket science. Janet obviously doesn't care about preserving her legacy and its not because she is married. During her 7 year hiatus she did nothing musically and then came back with Unbreakable and then abruptly ended the era, got pregnant and now we are back to square one. I think there are some other things personally going on with her. What do you think is going on?

There is a lot that JANET can do to preserve her legacy but for some strange reason she chooses not too.

Exactly. Rhythm Nation tour has had an HD transfer (as show on Oprah 2006). A janet. show has also (as shown on her Instagram). There is a plethora of unreleased J&L remixes, live version, alternate vocals, etc...

Exactly, these are examples of ways she can preserve her legacy without her being visible herself.

To attempt to partially answer the legacy question; I think part of the delay initially was waiting for her to gain complete ownership of her masters. That's been the case for a couple of years now (not sure exactly how many though). So, whenever she does begin to release those special editions, etc. most of that revenue should be coming home to mama. Why rush to put something else out prior to owning your masters, only to help make some other company money? She'll get around to it...............................................................................................................................eventually. wink razz

-

-

Oh...and "Unbreakable" was dope! And I don't care if I was the only one who bought it. She'll have something else to say. She's an artist. An independant one at that. She's not beholden to the "machine" anymore.

I really don't see how she is going to have time to tour in the next few years with a new baby... Unless she leaves him with a bunch of nannies.

I think you got things in the wrong order. She got pregnant and that ended the era. And ever since Michael's death she realized, there are far more important things in life than a career and what others think of her, which could change at any minute. She reached every goal she ever wanted to and it would be sad, if at 50 she still would be in that rat race to reach and be at the top. She's living life, as she should and with a new born child, she's got plenty of other things to do, than to care about a career in which she already achieved everything there is to achieve. She's set for life and her child is a billionaire heir. She never has to lift a finger again, if she doesn't feel like it. And to assume that she's depressed, because of her supposed lack of interest, really shows that you still got some things to learn. She just became a first time mother at 50 for christ sake. It's probably the greatest time in her life, apart from the lack of sleep due to a crying baby. wink
