I think the way she looked during the first half of 1991 was probably the best she ever looked so I always thought it was a shame that she never officially filmed anything to preserve that look.

She could have easily filmed a music video for RESCUE ME. Could have even filmed something for TRUTH OR DARE also. Other things she could have done with that look but sadly never did.

The best she ever looked and one of the few looks that was never officially preserved on video.

And when I mean officially/properly preserved I don't mean live performances/interviews/commercials/etc.

What a waste of a great look and she had that look for almost 6 months so it's not like she didn't have time to film it...

It is strange. If it was Prince you know he would have put some stuff in the vault. Maybe it didn't link to the music she was making. It is easily one of her classic looks. I wonder if anybody knows why.

I think in the first half of the year she was in the process of working with MJ (which didn't pan out) and around May she promoting Truth or Dare in the US/Europe and getting ready to film A League of their Own during the summer.

I agree, she looked stunning in 1991.

She was probably too busy editing Truth or Dare to do anything else. That was a mammoth task. She did film some Japanese TV ads late 1990/early 1991 that are on Youtube that evoke her 'Marilyn' phase quite well.

Even if she could have done something to include for Truth Or Dare it would have been nice though.

Could have done like an opening and closing or something filming that look for the movie (like how she did with The Virgin Tour.)

To do something like that would not have taken much time at all.

I think the logic is a bit off here. To say she didn't film anything for Truth or Dare... I mean, it's a film. She was in front of a camera on and off stage for months during the B.A. tour. Also, I can fully agree with others who said she was probably just taking some time off. The tour went through the whole spring & summer, ending in August. Later that fall both "Justify My Love" video, and The Immaculate Collection were released. That leaves 1991 to just breathe. That tour was grueling, even by her own admission. It's not really a new idea that an artist all but disappears after a major album & tour like Blond Ambition.

Actually, I think she looked just as wonderful in "Justify My Love", which is really one of the only times she fully soaked into the Monroe look. She had hints of it otherwise here and there, but that video really put her in that head space. There's an interesting juxtaposition with the cover art, and her later shorn-head look she used for most of the Erotica period. It was harsher, blunt, raw - much like the album which had a rawer production to it, opposed to the glossier Like A Prayer, and the later silky Bedtime Stories.

The Rain Tapes date to late 1991, so that proves she was back to work for Erotica. Not in front of a camera.

Erotica came out in 1992, so it makes sense that in 1991 she was just resting, recording new music.

A note about "Rescue Me": I don't know how she felt about that song back then but she seems to have shunned "Rescue Me" in more recent years, sorta deflating those asking her to perform it live. I dug the song, and it sort of sounded like "Vogue" and "Justify My Love" had a baby. It's danceable, has spoken elements, a big chorus, etc.

I'm willing to give ol' girl some time off. She works hard for what she does and puts out. It's thought out, cohesive, and immersive. You can look at one photo of her on any tour, and know exactly what tour it is, and almost what song or line she's singing. I suppose ones has to stay out of the camera to achieve all that. haha

She looked different in late 1990 because of the collagen in her lips. I think she looked better with her real lips...

This one came to mind. I don't know the month it was taken, but it seems to capture the look.

I remember it being on posters at the local department store, and the cover of a "Holiday/interview" import cassette.

This shoot was shot by Steven Meisel in Paris October/November 1990 whilst filming 'Justify My Love' ...the big lips give it away. Some of the shots were later used to promote SEX and the 'Bad Girl' single cover. Big hair, big lips!

I think part of the reason was her anger at the reception for the Justify my love video. It got banned and labelled as dirty, when in fact there's a few breasts and some horsing around in chintzy hotel rooms. The conservative media had a feild day. I thought it and the song were brilliant.

Madonna reacted to it by saying "My video shows people loving each other, yet if it showed people killing each other and high speed car chases, no one would be banning it" and she was also against Desert Storm.

I was going to say what about In Bed with Madonna (The title outside the conservative USA), but this was filmed in the 1990 Tour. Also Immaculate collection came out in 1990 and she was promoting that and the two new songs - Rescue Me and Justify my love (Both incredibly pleasing and amongst her best ever work). Also she had her lips done and these appear on the IC slicks, maybe she had some painful after effects, that only settled down in mid 91. Also she was messing around with MJ at the time.

Still I think it was because she had been put off by conservatives during the 1990 tour and the reaction to Justify my love. To me, 1988 - 1993 was the peak of Madonna and she could do no wrong. Also 89/90 had been big years and she just wanted a rest and was preparing for the Erotica/Sex Project and such oddities to get the shots with Vanilla Ice before his novelty wore off (Which it did at lightning pace).
