I have no idea why this guy is not more popular (pun intended) on this board. Popular is just
as scintillating as Parade.

Anyways, this song rawks.

One of Van's best.

I've been meaning to check out his last album, as I really dug his first four. Is it as good?

lol Funny you say that, as there was a time when if Van Hunt googled his own name, the .org was one of the first sites to pop up ( http://prince.org/msg/8/257935 )

If you will, so will I

It's a grower, fer sure. And if I was to assess it honestly, it's a bit underwhelming. But he's
such a quality artist that I'll take him anyway he gives it.

While I think it's a very good album, nothing on it has held my attention as long or gripped me as strong as the first four albums. I've been a huge fan of most of his work, but about third of the songs from The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets would require a play for me to remember how they sound right now.

If you will, so will I

I remember this thread.

This board can get really childish sometimes.

I agree.

And I think Van Hunt will be better appreciated 20 years from now, similar to Shuggie Otis. The
man who wrote "At the End of A Slow Dance" should be celebrated.

I guess he released another EP since then called I Come From A World That No Longer Exists but it sounds like he's phoning it in on these songs. You can do better, Van Hunt.

I absolutely love him. It is exciting to see his musical progression and growth. with his first album he was basically being pigeonholed into the "Neo Soul" slot.

Then.....he really let loose. He became so adventurous and vocally daring. This song though, fantastic!! clapping

It's his own "Rockhard In A Funky Place." And it has a tension, humor and funk of its own.

Identity

He's the unappreciated sage of psychedelic soul. Popular is an exciting, unforgettable album.

What does promotion mean? Interviews, touring and videos.

Nice song. I think the lack of popularity and radio play for Van Hunt suggests that even if Prince was putting killer albums and singles out later in his career that the musical zeitgeist had past and radio was no longer receeptive to funk rock fusion.

So you think Van Hunt is unpopular here at the Org because he doesn't interview, tour, or
do videos?

I agree: Van Hunt's genre-smashing approach to R&B isn't exactly en vogue.

--Being popular in the org is not promotion. He is not more well known by the masses because he does not promote his work. We even had someone in this board who claimed to work for Capitol records who said he refused to do promotion. Something us up with this brother.

Well, to be fair to me, the context of my post to which you responded to does ask why Hunt is
not more popular here at the Org, but if what you said is true, then yes, that does seem interesting.

D'Angelo doesn't do a lot of promotion either, does he? But he's so much more popular and well
respected/regarded here at the Org. This is strange as I think Hunt has a more interesting body
of work.

The Lowest 1 Of My Desires--Van Hunt: Gave it a listen--sounds to me like Funkadelic recruited MeShell Ndegeocello to knock out a tune together.

>

I guess it'd be possible for Van Hunt to raise his profile among more alternative-sounding-R&B/funk audiences. 2 guesses why this hasn't occured are that he lacks funds to proceed with more video production or he may be a cloistered musical creative who chooses not to bother much with "that other stuff." I don't know what kind of deals, if any, he makes with recording labels--if he has such attachments, obviously a label might float him a loan big enough to develop some cool video concepts; or perhaps he could crowdfund to meet such a goal. Barring that route, he could do some wierd things in public to generate more hype toward his catalog.

>

To compare Van Hunt and D'Angelo's popularity levels, Mr. Archer has stayed pretty low-key due to his (s)low solo output. D. also spreads contributions among other artists--this hasn't necessarily taken anything from his popularity, but buried his productivity into the credits of others' projects. Fortunately for D'Angelo the high acclaim of his first 2 albums (helping usher the 90s new wave of R&B arrangements) is grand enough to sustain interest among more conventional listeners. That, which I presume Van Hunt hasn't quite managed to capture, plus the press coverage of D.'s legendary gap between album recordings has kept D'Angelo's name in circulation throughout his quieter times. At any rate, I guess that having more videos from both of these artists would work in their favor.
