I'm really surprised by how many people list Thriller as their favourite album of the 80s. By all means, it's a great album, but I think that Bad is even better because MJ was more involved creatively in it. Of course, sales-wise, Bad did worse than Thriller, but you can't appeal to everyone.

Bad would be a close third for me (if we're discounting all Prince albums) but for me, Thriller is as close to perfect as anyone could realistically get. Well, replace The Girl Is Mine with Hot Street and it IS perfect. But Bad, though brilliant in itself, has a few songs that are only very good, rather than great. Of course, it's all personal taste, but Thriller is easily the best non Prince album of the 80's for me. Get rid of the Paul McCartney song and it might even be the greatest album of all time smile

I'm really surprised you are really surprised. Why wouldn't the biggest selling album of all time not be the favorite of the decade for many people?

Beat that suckers! (Too many R&B efforts on here- a really difficult genre to master!)

So hard to narrow it down. 1960s - Beatles Abbey Road 1970s - Joni Mitchell Blue 1980s - REM Fables of the Reconstruction 1990s - Jeff Buckley Grace 2000s - Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz 2010s - Jason Isbell - Southeastern

Really good choice! Right up there as one of greatest albums ever smile

Glad to see that someone else here is giving this album some love. REM seems awfully neglected on this boad when people are talking about the greats. They had such an impressive run!

It was impossible to improve the sales of Thriller. I guess this was the main problem with Michael Jackson: he made the best selling album of all time and there's no way you could ever top that. Yet he kept trying. That's his greatets tragedy. And that's why Prince was greater than Jackson: he never tried to "top" his last album, he just went on to the next...whether it sold a shitload or not... And he toured his ass off...

Indeed, specially because it limited his artistic development in some way.

1990s: Blowout Comb, Digable Planets

I played this a couple of weeks ago. I've been listening to them regularly since their reunion tour began early last year. I think they're still on tour, or at least they still were in February 2017. I hope they make a new record.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
