Too much ballads in their later years is what keeps them away from top Funk outfits.

There it is!

And they were pop ballads, not funk or R&B ballads. Big difference.

A group that got plenty accolades but surprisingly hardly comes up in a funk discussion is The Commodores. One listen to a track like Fancy Dancer and you are forced to say well these boys not only could funk with the best of em but rightly could be placed near the top of the list.

Fancy Dancer indeed great. Ever heard Gimme My Mule?

Absolutely supremely funky track. Also Sexy Lady from the Midnight elpee. Another band I must inject here is New Birth.

There it is!

It seems like this started in 1978 with the Natural High album. When "Three Times A Lady" became a massive hit single that summer, that's the direction they went in.Notice that when the next album came out,the two big singles were "Still" and "Sail On".Great songs, but nothing funky about 'em smile

Longtime fans will remember when they used to put out funk jams like "Machine Gun","Slippery When Wet",and "Fancy Dancer" headbang

anyone know if Lionel Richie ever released anything remotely funky on his solo albums or if he ever performed funky commodores tracks live? If not, why did he so distance himself from funk?

If you've got funk, you've got style.

He wanted to cross over and get that "pop" loot.
