Anita Baker Announces Retirement On Twitter

Looks like we will never see that album Anita Baker promised several years ago.

I feel that, when you are an artist and you no longer feel excited about music or you don't feel like you have anything new to say,you should retire.Anita is doing the right thing. It's better to confirm your retirement instead of keeping your fans waiting for new music that will never arrive.

Timeless voice and music. Anita got nothing to prove. She is an R&B legend and I wish her nothing but the best!

Anita Baker - great, distinctive voice. "sweet love" has stood the test of time. that said, in my opinion 90% of her songs sound the same.

.

if she is retiring, she has earned it.

I'll see you tonight..

I Follow Anita...Do you remember the compliment you gave her? She "likes" Tweets when she wants to but for the most part she ignores replies from Fans/visitors...

It appears that retirement makes sense to her...She's a Brand, she's The CEO/President...Her Band and management Team have to make a living and if she's not gonna tour/record anymore then she needs to release them so they can find steady work...It would make no sense to keep your Team on payroll when no work is being produced...

Going back to her time with Chapter 8 she was one of my faves. That said, I have not pined away through the years agonizing over her absence from the music scene. But she is among my five fave female singers with Chaka at the top, and then Aretha, Natalie Cole, Mavis Staples and Anita. Maybe throw Joyce Kennedy in there as a bonus pick.

Shes her own Management and I am sure no one is sitting around waiting on her to tour and record, im sure she has a studio in her house. She still owes Blue Note that other project, im sure she used that 7 year clause to get out of that deal.

she had a magical Jazzy RnB successful run. But sometimes when you go away and try to come back 'it' doesn't come back with you.

I think only Sade can disappear for years and come back and 'it' comes back with her

thumbs up! My favorite Anita Baker album as well. I would have loved hearing a straight, full blown jazz album from her. But Compositions is the one album I can play from start to finish without skipping a song.

I met her in Target here in Detroit back in 2007. My daughter (who was 2 years old at the time) was running through the store and sliding on her stomach. I'm telling her to stop running and she keeps running, thinking I'm playing a game with her, or chasing her. So she's laughing and running, and coming down the aisle is a woman, and my daughter runs right in to her. As I get closer, I say to myself "that woman looks like Anita Baker with no make up on". When I picked my daughter up to keep her from running away from me again, I stand back up and I'm face to face with Anita Baker (with no make up on lol ) I shook her hand and said "it's an honor to meet you" and she simply said "thank you". and I let her go on her way. The funny thing was she was scolding her teenage son who had one half of his hair braided and the other half in a wild afro and she was saying "You're either gonna keep your hair braided or cut it off but you're not gonna be going out in public embarrassing me!" I had heard that she visited that Target store often, and for the most part she didn't like to be bothered by fans or gawked at, and that she could be a trip sometimes so I was smart enough to keep it simple and keep it moving! lol

I have heard stories about her (sometimes) not-so-nice behavior (lol),so it's cool that you had a nice encounter with her smile
