Britney Ever After, starring Natasha Bassett on Lifetime Feb 18

Britney Ever After, starring Natasha Bassett as Britney Spears, will bow on February 18. The biopic follows the tumultuous story of the pop icon: her rise to fame, fall from grace and eventual resurrection.

Britney Ever After is produced by Asylum Entertainment for Lifetime. Steve Michaels, Jonathan Koch and Joan Harrison are executive producers. Leslie Libman directs from a script from Anne-Marie Hess.

Judging by her following Beyonce at last year's VMAs and introducing Beyonce at her own Vanguard dedication, this is somewhat of an amusing role reversal for the two biggest female pop icons of their generation. Regardless, she's easily as much an inspiration to the next generation of female artists (most that have more musical talent than her herself) as much as Beyonce and Christina Aguilera.

I really wish people would stop going to Lifetime for these low budget unauthorized bio movies. I do think out of all of the stars from her generation her bio movie would make a interesting movie in terms of her rise to superstardom and fall from grace. Its note worthy that she was able to break out and become a huge star during a period of music that pushed a lot of successful boy and girl bands. On the strength of her name alone she was able to surpass them and be as successful in some areas. There hasn't been a star over the last 20 years that has had as big of a peak as Britney Spears. Everyone loved Britney back then. She just had IT and I am tired of people always trashing Britney and minizing her success. Despite her personal issues, she has remained sweet and geninune which I have always admired.

And Britney Spears' success has more to do with Britney Spears and her music videos than Max Martin or anybody in her record company. She was performing ...Baby One More Time for months in shopping malls and wasn't a cultural icon in any way. Her song didn't even debut in the top 10. Then came the video, which she's always said was her idea(the clothing, the setting, the dance numbers) even though many like to say that record executives dressed her up, like they could have with any girl. Well, she clearly says in this clip that the music video was her idea...when she's not even famous!

Without the music videos for her first two albums she would not be one of 7 female artists with two diamond albums. I happen to think she was somewhat of a genius with the clothing attire that accompanied her videos. (My only issue lies with Janet Jackson, and the fact that she did not get the appropriate credit for inspiring her career and being as influential as any female artist on the next generation.)

Great post and very great points that I didn't even consider thumbs up!

I am not a huge Britney fan but I do really like her as a person (she is super sweet) and I feel she is underrated when it comes to her earlier success and some of her music particularly from 03-07 (which was pretty good pop music). I believe the big major draw with Britney's success was her authenticity and transparency. She always talked about the process of her music, inspirations, what inspired her music, videos, image, etc. She has ALWAYS said that she wasn't the greatest artist in the world and only wanted to make music that made people want to have fun (I have to find the direct quote) but I SAY this to say that she KNOWS her lane and never fronts like she is more than she is and I think that is why a lot of people liked her. She is not phony or a bitch like some of these other pop stars now. Britney's writes some of her music, talks about the process, her personal life and experiences that inspire her music. She is not Mozart BUT she does contribute a lot more than what she gets credit for. I think people take Britney for granted because of the era she came up in (the bubble gum pop phase/boy/girl band era). So they just assume she did not write any of her music or come up with anything herself and everything was just "given to her" but she actually had to work pretty damn hard when she first started out and contributed to her success unlike some other stars that came up in her era. She wasn't in a group, didn't have any industry connections and most did not take her seriously. Its interesting that she has always been painted as a manufactured "act" but if you listen to "In the Zone" its a very personal album and she even wrote on some of it and this was when she was going through her break down. I consider her brand to be way more authentic than a lot of these pop stars out now.

Your right, Janet does not get the rightful credit she deserves for inspiring Britney Spears (Despite Britney advocating for Janet) but I also feel Janet is just underrated and does not get proper acknowledgement for her influence and impact overall.

These are great points, as I'm a much bigger fan of Britney Spears the person than Britney Spears the musician.

But I'd also add if there is one video that shows that Britney Spears is THE pop culture icon from music of her era (Which includes Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and others), this might be it because I do think it is rather amusing:

Eminem was a fool back in the day and his crazy videos lol I don't consider the parenthesis music icons but IMO Britney has more of an argument to be called one because she has made a bigger impact than those two and she actually has iconic moments in popculture that are still looked back on and remembered. Britney is a doll, I love her as a person!

All good points, her songs were always catchy though the nasal voice annoyed me so much, until I heard she was dumbing herself down and would change it up later. I used to resent her for copying janet and getting away with it and her not being recognized, even early in Britney's career, but I agree she always seemed like a sweet, fun person from what I've seen and always has strong non singles on her albums. I agree in the zone was awesome, I bought it for Madonna back then but was pleasantly surprised with the musical growth and several of the tracks were constantly played. Shadow and everytime were so relatable. A couple of blackout tracks were kind of funky as well , and I wonder what it was like for Mayte to choreograph a song lifting nods from Nasty Girl lol

I loved her when i was a teen, i still like her and some of her music, she seems like a nice person. I remember how bad i felt in 2006/2007 when her life seemed to fell apart, the press were beyond cruel.

I already know this movie is gonna be a mess but I'll watch it anyways (on a torrent site) because I'm a fan and I'm interested to see what they come up with since they can't use her music.

In The Zone and Blackout are her best albums imo. I sorta grew up watching her music videos on MTV but didn't become a fan till Circus. I also like her new album Glory.

I will say that I discovered this clip from arguably the height of Spears' popularity in 2000 and at the 3:20 mark she says that Janet Jackson opened the door for her and that Madonna opened the door for Janet Jacksona and I had two thoughts:

1.It's ironic and a shame that she didn't chalk up Janet Jackson's influence on her more afterwords (despite constantly referencing her in music videos/performances) because she would have been more respected as a dancer. Of course she doesn't do much at all nowadays but many think she was never a talented dancer, which is false.

2. The second point is, did Madonna or Michael Jackson open the door for Janet Jackson or both? I don't at all see how Madonna could have openned the door for Janet Jackson as a dance act. I could see how, by following Cher, she could have opened the door for more assertive female artists, sexually, pop culture/business wise, etc...

Any thoughts on this?

I agree with this entire post but I would like to give my thoughts on your second question. I definitly think MJ opened doors for Janet. Most of her choreography and stage performances followed the blue print that Michael innovated in the 80s with choreographed stage performances, even Madonna was influenced by this. However, I also think JANET herself enhanced performances as well but she was definitly influenced by MJs stage performances early on especially during Control era and even took a lot of his ideas. AGAIN, I definitly think Janet went on to pioneer stage performances herself as she progressed and grew as a performer but she was inspired by Michael which even Janet has said herself. On Madonna, I personally dont think she has had any influence on Janet and Janet viewed her more so as a competitor. I don't see how Madonna could have opened a door for Janet when a lot of Madonna's performances followed the blue print that Michael started in the 80s with performances. ALSO, in her earlier career, Madonna wasn't heavily choreographed with her performances like Janet was by late 80s. I still think as a female pop star, Janet is the blue print for a female performer when it comes to high intense choreography. Nobody out now is even doing what she did on that level.I guess in terms of elaborate staging I can see how Madonna could have maybe open doors there for Janet.

You're right. The fact is that as a dance act, Madonna did not influence the dance style or choreography of any major female dance act of the last several decades.

While I agree that she's very much influenced by both, there are instances where you could say Britney literally ripped off Janet Jackson during her time as the biggest female pop star in the world. This simply was never the case with Madonna.

Case in point:

http://prince.org/msg/8/398792 (Although some are obviously homages to Janet Jackson rather than rip-offs)

The other thing is Britney's impact/legacy. It's ironic that people have gone on for years how much more talented Christina Aguilera is than Britney Spears. It's absolutely true that Christina Aguilera's vocal talent easily surpasses any notable talent of Britney Spears and is considered by many one of the greatest female vocal talents (whether you agree or disagree.)

It doesn't change the fact that Britney Spears opened the door for Christina Aguilera.

(0:48-2:48)

Although her personal life was somewhat unfulfilling, Christina's professional career as a singer was about to take off. It all started with the proper marketing platform. In order to get Christina's name out there in a short period of time, the Internet was to play a huge role. Britney Spears spent almost a year of touring malls all around the country before the release of her hit single. Christina did not have to submit herself to such a tour, because RCA understood the power of Internet marketing, and, to be fair, Britney had, in many ways, paved the way for her.

Christina Aguilera was already a great vocal talent in the early to mid 1990s on the Mickey Mouse Club but did not become a superstar until Genie in a Bottle.

Again, I'm not a huge fan of Britney's entertainment/music other than her earlier dancing ability, as she was a real Janet Jackson disciple in that regard and a true talent at her best, but have to recognize her impact.
