I'm sorry to bust chops, but those two albums couldn't be any more different to each other. Different moods, different eras, different everything really. Some better comparisons would be Kind of Blue vs. 'Round About Midnight, and Bitches Brew vs. Tribute to Jack Johnson (or perhaps Live-Evil). Many regard Kind Of.. as the gold standard of classic traditional Jazz albums, whereas Bitches is regarded in the same vein, but for fusion. Yes, those two are Miles' most popular and influential albums, but you simply can't compare them. Put it this way: If I'm hosting a dinner party, or perhaps I've invited a lovely young woman over for the evening, Kind of Blue is second to none. On the other hand; If I'm feeling insular, and I have an overall detached, chatoic state of mind, Bitches Brew speaks very clearly to me. I've been to some dark places with Bitches Brew before, and it's not a record you can take lightly. Difficult, but wholly rewarding. And with that said, anybody who likes Miles is cool in my book woot!

someone grabs your music collection and threatens to set fire to it all... the only way to stop them is to pick which of these two albums you prefer

you choose.......?

Without question, Bitches Brew. I'm still hearing things I've never heard before on that record. I know KOB like the back of my hands, Bitches Brew sounds new each time I spint it. But the Miles I roll with most of the time....is neither of those albums. Give me Dark Magus, Get Up With It, or Agharta. I like my Miles evil.

Tough, tough decision. It would boil down to what mood I was in at the time. Both are excellent, excellent albums. But on any given day, probably 'Kind of Blue'. ONLY, because its a structured album. 'Bitches Brew' isn't an album I can listen to at any given time. Even though I love it! The title track on 'Bitches Brew' alone is amazing. But for the reaasons I stated, by a hair... 'Kind of Blue'.

Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

I have to be in the right mood to listen to Bitches Brew. If not, it can be a little overwhelming. Now, as for Kind of Blue? I can be pretty much in any mood and still find bliss in listening to that album. Not to say that i don't find enjoyment in Bitches Brew, but with that album it takes more mental focus for me to process everything that going on. With Kind of Blue, i don't really have to think. I just feel.

When i first saw this thread my thought's were..."easy... Bitches Brew". But now I'm not so sure.

So, if i had to choose between ever only being able to listen to one or the other...?? I'd choose Kind of Blue.

Sort of off-topic, but has anyone seen the Miles movie yet? I haven't yet, and I've been dying to. What did you think of it?

Miles Ahead? Don Cheadle did a good job. I thought the free-form narrative was an appropriate choice for a jazz film. I'd rate it a 7/10.

Bitches Brew
is a fucking mess. But Kind of Blue is pandering to whites (mostly). Culturally, I'd
go with former. Compositionally, I'd go with the latter.

If I remember correctly, Davis hired Evans to play keys on some of the tunes as he was
wanting a more "European" feel while exploring modal jazz. So, Kind of Blue is accesible because
of Evans' playing, in part. And again: if I remember correctly, Davis (or, his record label, or,
both) wanted a hit with this album so, Kind of Blue is mostly pandering to a white audience who
were the segment of the population buying jazz records then (and now).

I think if one denies that Miles Davis was never aware of racial issues in music, s/he has only
a cursory understanding of who Miles Davis was. Most jazz critics, who are white, gush over this
record, and I wonder sometimes if it's because it's Davis' more "European" jazz album.

Have you read Davis' autobiography?

I know a lot about Miles Davis and race therefore, I know he was not pandering to white people. He wanted to experiment with the modal jazz and he liked Evans playing. Plenty of black people liked this recording back then if you want to know how the black community responded read a little bit about what Quincy Troupe has to say about it as a fellow St. Louis resident who was a hugh Miles fan as a teenager in the 50s. Miles and Me by Quincy Troupe.

I read the autobiography and I have no idea how anyone can read it and see Miles as a buttkisser.

Pandering does not mean kissing butt, Laura. It means to provide gratification for others'
desires. Miles Davis was intentionally making a record he hoped white people would buy as
it pertains to Kind of Blue; not solely, mind you, but there was some pandering to white America
with its creation. Davis actually came out towards of the end of his career and was slightly
disparaging about Kind of Blue because it was an overt pandering to his white audience!

Perhaps your misunderstanding of the word "pandering" is what is the hiccup here?

I have never read anywhere that Miles Davis had anything bad to say about Kind If Blue. When you say pandering to whites you are saying he was trying to please whites to sell records that is buttkissig. Any I question anyone who wants to put a race label on music. Funny you are on Prince org doing this when Prince fought so hard against this.
