Keith Richards: Jimi Hendrix killed guitar!!

Rolling Stone did a piece on the old goats, who have a nice blues album out. Keith Richards mentioned that he digged Hendrix, but that he actually killed guitar, because he introduced feedback as a style and now every guitar player does the same thing with loud noises. His complaint is that that killed more subtle guitar playing.

Keef has always been my favorite Stone, but he is always moaning about something that doesn't fit into his very narrow definition of music and how it should be delivered. To make that statement, especially today when we have so much music and sub genres that are so easily accessible to consumers, comes across as out of touch.

He is probably sore about Linda Keith.

One of Jimi's big inspirations was Curtis Mayfield who is as subtle and delicate on guitar as you can get. "The Wind Cries Mary" "May This Be Love" "Castles Made Of Sand" all show the delicate side of Jimi's playing.

On point, I've always wished that the Stones accepted a little more feedback and distortion in their game. Hey, let's just agree that if you are the two best songwriters in rock, it ain't broke. However, a little distortion would have been nice, fellas. It was great when we did get some ala Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby. And their live game didn't welcome distortion, either. Hell, I have boots with Mick moaning about a lil feedback and distortion...during the Mick Taylor years! Taylor and Richards never had sword fights on stage and that, my friends, is a failure. A failure to the fans, to distortion-lore, and rock n roll. And instead of saying fuck you to Keith for sayin' this stupid shit, I just got one word, baby: Angel. Light that shit up, Keef.

Hendrix didn't introduce feedback; he helped popularize it. And Richard's quote here is a superficial
assessment of Hendrix's style as if he's only recognized as one of the most influential guitarists of all
time because of his sonic approach to playing electric guitar.

In other words, there's more to Jimi Hendrix than feedback.
