I just heard about this yesterday. Planning to listen later today. I hope it's as good and funky as everyone says.

It's good, and the production is superb. He still sounds like an actor though. He still needs to find himself up in all of this. I'd give it 4 out of 5.

I listened to it several times over the weekend. Solid album. Very funky. Nice change from other current releases. My son told me it was the talk of his friends in high school. I was happy to hear that it struck a chord with the younger generation who don't know real music. I told him to let them know to listen to Parliment, Sly and the Family Stone, and certainly Prince.

This album was a really nice surprise, I'm really digging the change in direction, feels like Donald Glover is really coming into his own this year as a very multi-talented dude with first Atlanta and now this. My only problem is that quite a few of the songs almost sound like soundalikes in places, Have Some Love, Redbone and Baby Boy very closely resemble Can You Get To That, I'd Rather Be With You and Just Like A Baby. Still though it's great to hear a mainstream album in 2016 wearing its P-Funk and Sly influences on its sleeve so I can't get too mad at it.

Eh, it's competent but if I wanted to listen to Funkadelic i'll just put on some Funkadelic. Some of the direct descendents of these tracks are a little too direct confused

If this was Marvin Gaye's sound the estate would already be contacting the lawyers lol

I gave it a listen and liked it. However, he totally jacked Funkadelic. I appreciate his effort, but would've liked more of Gambino (whatever that is) and less Funkadelic. His stamp is not on this at all.

I guess it's a positive if young people unfamiliar with funk music hear it and become intrigued by it. That could lead to research into some of the pioneers and maybe an interest in creating and expanding on the art form.

FUCKING FANTASTIC ALBUM! I've liked all of Gambinos past few albums and this was a total 360. He made some legit psyechedlic funk! biggrin man i'm bumping this hard.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

i understand the funkadelic comparisons , but an even closer comparison might be Lenny Kravitz' first album, "Let Love Rule"...

See? Young folks do listen to good music! Will 'Awaken My Love' top the album charts? Probably not, but it finds its way to an audience that can dig it.

Guys I'm really hooked

This albums offers so many good moments.

Really digging the fact that Donald switched his direction for this LP, I wish artists would have the courage to embark on a musical journey to learn, be inspired and then create a true, genuine body of work. I dont care if it feels like a Funkadelic album, inspiration shouldn't always push for originality. Childish Gambino is the shit y'all.

This and the 24K Magic album just spread good vibes, no matter how advanced and weird the standards of musical triumph get nowadays, it's nice to hear throwback tunes.

I came across this album the other day on Spotify, and I'm loving the P-Funk sound. Of course I've heard his name before, but I had no idea who he was. I have to check out more of his work. cool

whether its accidental or natural, the Prince influence is subtle but its there...on "Baby Boy" and "Redbone", his vocals, including screams and adlibs, sound like Prince' and Macy Gray's voices put together in a blender..."Terrified" sounds like an unreleased Andre Cymone ballad...and the middle of "Me And Your Mama" sounds like a young, hungry Lenny Kravitz...i wish he would break into one of his joints during an episode of "Atlanta"...dude is creating magic in multiple lanes in entertainment... i aint heard anyone referred to as a 'renaissance man' in a minute...but he's doing several crafts at a high level..
