Another day, another milestone passed by Adele's phenomenal album 25.
The Londoner's third studio album has now been certified Diamond in the United States, a certification that signifies when an album has shifted over 10 million physical and digital sales.
25 becomes the first album to achieve this status in nearly four years; the last album to break the 10x Platinum threshold? Adele's 21 back in October 2012. Why have one Diamond record when you can have two?

25 sold over one third of its 10 million US sales in its opening week on sale when 3.38 million Americans picked up a copy of the album. The album is also the fastest-selling album ever recorded in a single chart week in the UK, shifting 800,307 units.
The album is also the fastest to ever reach two million units sold in the UK, and you guessed it, it is also the quickest to pass the three million sales barrier. We revealed during our Official Album...lebrations that despite only being released in November 2015, 25 is already the 27th best selling album of all time.

Who said anything about Beyonce?

In any case, congrats to Adele for selling albums like it's 1999! When it comes to album sales she is basically today's Michael; the only other person to come close to matching her sales is Taylor Swift and even she has yet to achieve diamond status, much less with two consecutive albums and at the rate Adele has.

Well, it hasn't had the chart succes of 21 and in my opinion is not as strong as 21. "Hello" has been her only number one off this album, "When We Were Young" did not top the charts, even though is a better song than "Hello".

It's easier to think of 25 as the Bad to 21's Thriller.

The only difference between them is that MJ changed his sound, included a few new topics to sing about and had more #1s and overall more successful singles. However, 25 has sold/ is selling much faster than Bad did and according to Wikipedia has outsold Bad in the US by approximately 100,000 units.

Way to go Adele. 25 may not as good as 21, but so often these smashes are followed up by a bomb, and it certainly wasn't the case here. Much rather her than most of the singers who fill up the TOP 40.

Exactly. I wasn't expecting 25 to have the impact that 21 did, no artist has more than one magnum opus.

Kinda apples and oranges, really but Bad is much more appealing.

BAD is automatically superior because its a classic, groundbreaking and an ICONIC album with a string of classic hits. Its influence and impact on pop culture surpasses that of "25" and thoses songs are still playing today. However I do agree with you about the apples and oranges point, not sure why MJ was even mentioned because your right (its apple and oranges) I do think her "21" album will be a revered as a classic.

I am waiting to hear the excuses from the Adele haters tumblr_n2pntya8dN1sn7zr6o3_250.gif

The criticisms that she received from the success of her "21" album as being a fluke has now been proven false. Adele is clearly a force to be reckoned with in todays music market and she has the statistics receipts to back it up. I think it is fair to say at this point that Adele is massively popular and a star who has rightfully earned her success and accloades. People and Media hype lie, numbers don't.... GO ADELE! GO ADELE! Keep snatching off them edges. razz

The reason I say comparing Adele to Michael on a musical level is more apples and oranges is because they both make very different types of music. Just as Michael was a pop artist, Adele is to but the pop music made by Michael and the pop music made by Adele is as different as night and day.

25 is comparable to Bad in the commercial sense: both were the follow ups to both artists' biggest releases/ magnum opi and are/ were very, very successful in their own right but don't stack up to the commercial standard set by their previous installments (and in Bad's case was unfairly judged to a degree because it didn't top the previous release).

The differences however is that Bad sounds far different from Thriller, it had more successful singles than 25 has and is heralded as a classic now. 25 is basically 21: Part 2 and is more of the same (that isn't necessarily a bad thing but is the case). 21 is already considered a modern classic but I doubt 25 will be considered as such even a decade from now. If the performance of 25's singles are anything to go by, Adele is an albums-artist so even if she never has a number 1 single again, she'll always be able to fall back on her lucrative album sales. I think she could probably move some significant units even without a [successful] single.

In any case, Adele is the highest selling act we have by far. An artist having a certified diamond release (let alone 2) in the 2010s was unheard of until now.

It's exactly as you say, the numbers don't lie. Adele is obviously very popular. Personally, I don't understand why. I don't like any of her songs (I find them all incredibly boring) and I think she's very overrated as a vocalist. Don't get me wrong, I've seen her give some good vocal performances but I've also seen some mediocre ones. All I'll say is that she's certainly no Aretha Franklin as far as talent goes. But fair play to her. She seems like a decent person, which is rare in the music industry, so even though I don't like her music, I wouldn't begrudge her her success.

Fair assessment. I don't think she is the greatest ever she damn sure ain't no Aretha but these numbers don't lie and at the very least she has that to back up her success. Also, she is one of two pop stars out right now that makes quality music and I will give an honorable mention Rihanna as well, Anti is a good pop album.
