Maybe it is because I heard them both first but I like both the rehearsal version of Cosmic Slop from Hardcore Jollies and live version of Maggot Brain from One Nation Under a Groove better than the studio versions. Or maybe it is because they are both better audio recordings and the guitar is more upfront and shredding. Or maybe I just like Mike Hampton better than Eddie Hazel?

I heard the Hampton version of "Maggot Brain" first too and it was hard to get used to the Hazel version that I heard later.

Actually, when I was a teenager, I thought "One Nation Under A Groove" album was some type of a compilation release. It was because the CD had "Maggot Brain" at the end of it, along with other bonus tracks. It was a misconception that I had for years.

I know Maggot Brain is Eddie's manifesto. The magnum opus. However, Michael Hampton has got to be made co-owner or something. Of all the P axe men I've heard play it, including Eddie, I have seen Kidd Funkadelic take it to some otherworldly places I could even begin to follow. Just no words for it. I've got some live takes over here of him doing it that render the One Nation version sounding lightweight. Which is saying a lot, that being the first version of it my young ears had heard at the time.

Some of those versions he does caught on old videos like D.C. in 1978 are, great way to describe it, otherwordly. I am sure most of you know the story but just in case anyone does not, he got into Funkadelic by playing George Maggot Brain perfectly when he was like 15 or 16 and that got him his ride on the Mothership. No one, IMO, could do it quite like Kidd Funkadelic, and he was pretty fierce in his prime on Cosmic Slop too.
