node-image_0.jpg

The singer best known for his smash singles “Trapped” and “Not Gonna Let” succumbed to various ailments on Thanksgiving night. He was 67. He had been very ill and struggling to the point of homelessness financially for quite some time. KUDOS to WBLS for holding a fundraiser in his name this past January. N0 details on services yet.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

"Trapped" was a huge hit over in Europe but "I'm Not Gonna Let" is what got him on U.S. R&B radio.

Last weekend, I lent my copy of Colonel Abrams' album and 12" of "Trapped" to a friend spinning house music. Absolute classique.

It was horrifying. He was sick and living on the street for years.

Improbable as it seems, Colonel Abrams OWNED Los Angeles in late '93/early '94. You couldn't walk down the street to the store at that particluar time without hearing this record booming out of the back of a car. And this was at the very height of gangster rap and on its home turf!! Power 106 it seemed like was playing this record 10 times a day for months.

Sometime around 1994 there was a Video Soul/Donnie Simpson interview of Colonel Abrams on BET which I have been looking high and low for on YouTube in recent years but thus far have not been able to find it. They were talking about some really cool shit - it was really great... Perhaps it will materialize sometime soon. Someone has it out there on VHS!!
