The new holy trinity of pop?

Yes, I'm starting a little controversy here on the org. Are Gaga, The Weeknd and Bruno Mars what Madonna, MJ and Prince were to 80s? Ok first off, I'm not a fan of the Weeknd at all. In my opinion, he's a cheap, two dollar bin, version of an MJ wanna be. I'm curious to see if his new album will change my mind but there's no denying he's becoming a star and definitely has been influenced by MJ. Gaga, as we all know, is a less imaginative version of Madge, although I actually like her and feel she has potential to grow. Bruno Mars, who is very popular here at the org, has a lil freak in him and gets funkier with each album, a la Prince and I love it. The freakier the better. So what do you think? Is my conspiracy theory right?

Only in influence and resemblance.

Don't get me wrong, all are talented (I don't like The Weeknd either) but none have had or will have the impact what those 3 had when it comes to music. Everything Bruno, Weeknd and Gaga do has been done before by Prince, Michael and Madonna. They are popular and have their fanbases and can serve as gateways to their influences' music for their younger audience but in the grand scheme, they'll always be in their predecessors' shadow.

EDIT:

Also, the holy trinity of pop music consists of Elvis, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. The combination of MJ, Prince and Madonna is the definitive Big 3 of the 80s.

I don't see anyone who is as prolific as Prince this decade. He released an album year after year and his evolution was crazy.

To me, the closest thing to someone in his caliber is St. Vincent, she's the new Prince.

Bruno is regarded by everyone as the new MJ because of the ressemblance between the two.

And yeah, Gaga has always been the new Madonna.

Gaga, Bruno and the Weeknd are definitely derivative as hell. It's so true that everything they will or have already attempted to do in music, has already been done before. Literally, one of them would have to do something really extreme in order to shock us, like shoot themselves out of a cannon. But seriously, one thing that bugs me is that kids today really think these people are inventing the wheel and are original. It breaks my heart in a way.

Agree with this. Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna made a HUGE, GLOBAL impact in the 80s, and I havent seen any artist after them make an impact like they did since then. To be honest, I think those kind of impacts are a once in a lifetime type thing. Those 3 revolutionized music genres and music videos in a way that has become the blueprint to what today's artists aspire to achieve.

Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga (the Weak-end is meh to me) are definitely icons at the moment, but what kind of impact they will leave still remains to be seen. But I dont see them making the kind of impact that their idols Madonna, Michael and Prince did.

Excellent posts from both of you!

Lady Gaga isn't necessarily the new Madonna but she's as close as you'll get these days. I don't like Madonna but at least she was her own woman. Lady Gaga always seemed to me like ahead was just impersonating her. As far as a new Michael Jackson or Prince, that's never going to happen. There'll never be another artist with Michael Jackson's impact. Now, I am a big MJ fan but even if I wasn't, there'd be no denying the impact he had on pop music. Virtually everyone who followed were inspired by him. He is truly a one off. Same goes for Prince. He may not have been as famous as MJ or had as many number ones or record sales, but in terms of true talent, he was also a one off. So there will never be another "trinity of pop" of that level.

The question is what new artist will expand the holy trinity of pop into a holy quartet?

You got Elvis in the 50's, The Beatles in the 60's and Michael in the 80's. Nobody since the 1980s has reached these 3's level of affluence and impact in music. Who's next? At this rate, I think it will remain a trinity because nobody over the past near 3 decades has had the type of effect on the world that they did.

In terms of commercial success, Taylor Swift deserves mention over Bieber.

Please please please don't bring Taylor Swift into this. She is absolutely dreadful and her music (if you can call it that), is so lame, juvenile and lacks any form of artistic integrity. Give me Gaga over her any day. Taylor Swift doesn't have the balls to do anything interesting or different.

Justin Bieber actually has potential but he is not on MJ's level at all. At least the Weeknd tries to stretch himself artistically, somewhat.

Taylor's bland, paint-by-numbers music is beside the point. If we're talking commercial success in music today then you can't not include her. She sucks but I never said she didn't.
