Prince family should take notes from Bob Dylan.

They are about to release every single Bob Dylan concert from 1966 on cd box sex? Every fucking show he did. Prince family, do something similar. How about every Lovesexy piano sitdown?>

God lord, had no idea that was coming out, 36 discs, that's incredible. Personally although I'm a big Dylan fan I'm probably not obsessive enough to really want more than one or two recordings from the same tour (and even with Prince really I'm quite often satisfied with having just one good recording from each tour, don't think I've listened to many Purple Rain tour shows beyond Syracuse for example) but still it would be great to see more artists doing this.

I love Dylan's music, have to say is a little too much, though.

And there's talk of yet another Bootleg Series about the Born Again years (1979-81) coming up next year. But you can only do a box set about an entire tour if the tour wasn't that long, otherwise we'll be talking about hundreds of CDs. But I agree, Dylan is an excellent example of how to run a back catalogue in a way that pleases the fans.

Oh and for those who think 36 CDs is too much, there will be a double CD from a concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Very true.

This is why i am a big Madonna fan though. The last 5 tours we have had not only the DVD, the tourbook, the Soundboard Audio to accompany the tour at least within a year of the last date. Not to say Prince SHOULD have done this but he had all the ability to as an independant artist. I think his leagacy within the years will be done correctly though just wait for it.

It'll take years. But the estate folks seem to be sharp. As I see it. for purposes of curating and releasing his music, Prince is in the league of the jazz greats, given his extensive vault of music and number of labels he recorded for.

IIRC, it took years if not decades for labels like Columbia and RCA to catalogue and (re-)release the output of the Miles Davises, John Coltranes and Thelonious Monks. It'll take the same for Prince.

They have to figure out how to package and market it. That will be a task in and of itself. As for the concerts, Prince regularly recorded them. I'd love to see and hear shows from the Parade, SOTT and "Nude" Tours, as well as a blu-ray release of Prince and The Revolution Live! and the SOTT film.

But I am presuming we won't see a lot of this until the 20's.

Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I don't expect instant gratification. I don't mind if "the estate" take their time. Going through the vault may be like trying to sort out a bucket of wet eels. I know that will take a while. But then again, it shouldn't take too long or people will start to lose interest. I'm just saying that if you're looking for a good way to handle Prince's unreleased recordings, 2freaky is absolutely right in pointing out that the way Dylan is doing it, is worth looking at. He's been releasing box sets covering every part of his carreer for the last 25 years, all with booklets providing background information... That's the way to do it!

I don't know yet. That 1966 tour has become legendary because folks were booing him for "going electric" while at the same time he was making some groundbreaking music and it would be fascinating to hear that. And it will also depend a lot on the price of the box. So I'm not sure yet if I want to buy it. But those Born Again years were pretty cool too. Dylan fans reacted to that much like Prince fans reacted to The Rainbow Children: good music, but preachy lyrics.

I haven't disputed any of that in my reply to freaky, so I don't know what you're talking about. What I said is that the people admistering Prince's estate have only had six months to do so.

Bob Dylan is still alive.

I'm still down with "Purple ," a boxed set (44 discs) which might feature all of Prince's studio albums remastered (each one made up of three discs which feature vault items from each respective period as well as 12" extended versions), another disc of all his productions for other artists (Andre Cymone, Sheena Easton, Martika, The Bangles, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Mavis Staples, Tevin Campbell, Pattil Labelle, etc...), all the side projects remastered with vault items (The Time, The Family, Vanity and Apollonia 6, Rosie Gaines, Mayte, Carmen Electra, Jill Jones), a hardcover book and a set of 6 purple amethyst raindrops for good measure. I know...I'm DREAMIN'! wink
