Where's D'Angelo?

Am I missing something or did he fall off the planet?

Hopefully he's off recording another album that we won't have to wait another decade to hear.

Is this a serious question? He relased an album late December of 2014. After a 14 year hiatus. HE last performed a Prince song on Jimmy Fallon about a week or so after he passed. He was supposed to headline the BET Awards in June, but that was scraped.

D'Angelo headlined the first ever Roots Picnic 3 weeks ago at Bryant Park in NYC. John Mayer backed him as the second lead guitarist. There is some fan-shot footage on YouTube.

In an interview with Rolling Stone last year, D'Angelo revealed that he has been working on a follow-up for Black Messiah. He explained that it will be like a "companion piece".

Well, I'm not worried about that. He's doing better now smile ... There are reasons why it took him about 14 years to release another project.

I didn't mean it like that. I believe there was a D'Angelo sticky for quit a while after his recent disc came out.

Yes and check out the Okayplayer website too. I follow them on Instagram and they posted an excellent vid/snippet of D'Angelo's rehearsal for the Roots Picnic. Ahh man, it was off the chain. nod They posted pics too and it seems that D still appears to look healthy...has put on some more weight though.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Nothing odd about the question. The album was released almost two years ago, was critically acclaimed, but it doesn't seem to be the case that he properly utilized the chance to restart his career with it.

Does anyone have the setlist for the Roots Picnic appearance? I'm interested to know if he's changed it up at all since I saw him last year.

I know right...can't believe that it's been two years already!!! D has struck me as a person who doesn't seem to handle fame well. I don't think he wants the attention he gets from being such a critically acclaimed artist. Seems to me that he just a regular person that wants to do his music and/or tour when he wants and not on anybody else's time.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I get that Impression about D'Angelo also and I'm cool with that. If he drops something soon I hope it's like a double or triple album. Enough to hold fans over if he wants to disappear for 5 yrs or more.

Ah cheers. Looks like he's gone back to mostly playing Voodoo material bit that's probably understandable in this instance given that it was a shorter set and people would understandably want to hear the classic songs. Nice to see that he covered Pop Life, wonder what that sounded like hmmm

Because it was a shorter set, and you'd figure they'd play the "classic songs", I'm surprised to not see any of the actual singles from the Voodoo album.

If you will, so will I

Very true, that's a good observation, I guess I tend to think of Voodoo as a kind of contiguous whole and don't really tend to think of the singles as standing out or apart from the album (with the obvious exception of Untitled which is definitely a notable absence from the setlist.) But yeah you're right, it's hardly a super commercial setlist designed to appeal to the masses (that sounds super condescending but you know what I mean) that I perhaps insinuated it was.
