Remembering Vesta Williams 5 Years Later

It was 5 years ago yesterday on September 22, 2011 that we shockingly lost my beloved Vesta Williams to heart disease. Vesta will always be one of my all time favorite singers. She was one of the few singers who could move me with her voice. She and her music will forever remain in my heart. I miss you so much Vesta. sad

Yeah she was really great. I regret I never got to see her perform live.

She liked to entertain and she wouldn't just stand up sing and get paid

she also wanted the audience to enjoy and that's why she would inject

a bit of comedy into her shows.

I still have her first album on vinyl."Once Bitten,Twice Shy" remains one of my favorite R&B songs of the 80s.On that first album,Vesta was an R&B/dance queen with some hot grooves smile On later albums, she was marketed as a slow jam/quiet storm artist (like Regina Belle,Miki Howard, and others) but I still prefer her first album.

True.

I liked Something About You. She was moving in that video too. lol

The 4 U album was okay. A few of the songs had a New Jack flavor which

was everything Vesta was not but the title track still remains one of my

favorites by Vesta too.

But, you have to admit those ballads on her first album were astonishing! I feel A&M tried to turn her into even more of a Dance artist on her other albums because most of the dance tunes on "4U", "Everything N' More" and especially "Special" were New Jack, which was a HUGE mistake. They should have put more of a concentration on what she did best...ballads. A singer of her caliber had no business following that trend. Elektra was not encouraging Anita Baker to record New Jack and she didn't.

Vesta had unfortunately signed with A&M and released her debut the same year Janet Jackson's career took off so she had to take a back seat to Janet. I think she would have received better uptempo songs if the attention wasn't focused on Janet. Also, would have LOVED for Jam & Lewis to have worked with Vesta.

Vesta's Unsung episode is still imy favorite of the series thus far. It's the only episode that made me laugh and cry all at the same time.
