Elle mag calls FKA twigs "the new Prince"

Is Twigs about to make that big leap across the pond and blow here in the States? I really dig her debut album LP1. The production is solid and she wrote/produced most of it. And I love her voice it's so angelic/soothing.

FKA twigs is...FKA twigs. Period.

She produces dreamlike and great songs in her wonderfully distinctive voice. I think that the comparison is unfair or if nothing else incorrect.

Her songs are not hooky-enough to be the new Prince, she's more about vibes.

Whether you think she's good or bad doesn't matter, it's a lazy comparison that pretty much relies people thinking of Prince as meaning "not white, a little stranger than your average" .

Why does anyone need to be "the new Prince"? I'm not really familiar with her music but does it seem like every few years some magazine or whatever hypes someone as "the new Madonna or Michael Jackson or Prince or fill in the blank. Someone new on the scene should be more about creating their own legacy instead of trying to live up to someone else's expectations and legacy.

I feel like this is an insult to Prince, and FKA twigs. I've seen exactly one video of FKA twigs, and she's not described in terms of Prince, let's say. And she's real.

Originals are never described in terms of someone else. It's what people do in pitch meetings for movies.

"Well uh, this dude Prince is a combo of Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix."

"Prince is really a time shifted Little Richard"

"Michael Jackson is really retro Bruno Mars."

Well her manager, representative and/or her liked the comparison to Prince enough for it to be on the cover of the magazine. Unless she and her team have no say on that. I know Prince was a fan of hers but you know they wouldn't have made the comparison if he was still alive, they didn't describe her as the new Prince when she first came out.

She's just a very different artist to Prince. I'm not sure why they're drawing a comparison with him.

My guess would be the vulgar sexual language being used by her that Prince used to use in his early years.

The press really need to stop burdening these artists with the "new so & so" taglines. There's no gain from that whatsoever. How come their talent is not good enough? Why do they have to be "the new Prince" or "the new MJ"? Lazy journalism rolleyes

I seriously doubt they have any say in that, it's not a press release.

Precisely. I hate headlines like that. FKA Twigs is fantastic in her own way. I believe Prince liked her too (didn't she play Paisley Park?). However, her artistic style is very different from his and no one needs to (or is able to ) replace him anyway.

If you will, so will I

Well one thing I can say for sure is that the little lady knows how to put on a show. I love this sped up version of Pendulum she did over the weekend.

Yes, I quickly read the article, and it did say that Twigs performed with Prince onstage shortly before he died.

I gotta admit, I'm digging FKA Twigs' song, "Two Weeks". I listened to it last night, and it got stuck in my head. I think she has a pretty singing voice. But Prince she is not.

One of my online friends said the same thing. He said that she is more like Bjork or Kate Bush.

Just kidding. but in all seriousness she's cool. I wouldn't compare her to Prince, I think there's a lot of artists right now you could compare with Prince (Neon Indian, Jai Paul, Miguel). But her style and music doesn't remind me of Prince music. But Prince was known to be a fan, he hosted her at Paisley Park last year for one of the late night performances. I think they even played a song together perhaps? I could be wrong.
