Blood Orange drops his new album Freetown Sound!

I'm a big fan of Blood Orange a.k.a Dev Hynes, and he just dropped his newest album Freetown Sound!

Listen now:

His new music video (couldn't figure how to embed):

Freetown Sound interview:

http://www.ew.com/article...-interview

Dev said on instagram about his new album:

“My album is for everyone told they’re not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way … it’s a clapback.”

Any other Dev fans out there? biggrin

What attracts me to his music its definitely 80s influenced, he expresses how he feels through his music, he seems like a really cool intelligent person, and he talks about social issues in America and UK. I had the honor to meet him in LA probably over 2 years ago now in a record store, I was sooo nervous but he was really nice!

P.s. He posted a promo for his album on twitter a few weeks ago with a necklace of the love symbol prince in it and I replied "love the love symbol!" but he deleted it quickly afterwards...? Hmm.....

thumbs up!

Although, drops his new album is more accurate wink

.

But yeah, bit of a surprise its here a few days early. I'm a CD buyer so will have to wait until August according to Amazon!

.

Been waiting for this for ages. Have enjoyed previous Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion stuff.

.

Direct from label had a special on the vinyl, included a 10" of 2 previously available, but non-album tracks.

.

Lets just go somewhere (we can funk)

Yeah true I'll fix that bit!

I got the vinyl with the 10" through his label Domino Records but a little saddened that its not going to arrive until around august 19th sad

I'll probably find a good time to sit down and listen to it streamed this week though cool

My first impressions:

Shitloads of reverb.

Some nice sonic experiments, almost IDM-ish on some tracks, but I can barely hear the details because of the reverb.

Nice use of sustained notes instead of chord progressions on some tracks - the guy's obviously into ambient stuff.

More conventional R&B / pop type of songwriting can be found halfway into the album.

Really, way too much reverb all the way through. I know it's a trend, but I'm just getting the impression he's trying to hide his not-so-great vocal takes with it.

Still haven't gotten a chance to listen to the album sad , but I get what you mean by the reverb!

He does that to most of his songs. I've seen him live twice and I can atest that his vocals are great in my own opinion, but he's said before in interviews he hates his singing voice lol.

Loved his previous work, especially Cupid Deluxe and True, so was excited about Freetown Sound. Falls a bit flat on first listen, though. Too many meandering asides and weak hooks, particularly on Augustine.

The fully formed songs are better. E.V.P., Hadron Collider and Better Than Me show progress to a more experimental sound while retaining the poppy hooks of Cupid Deluxe. Best to You and But You are both lovely. I hope the rest of the album grows on me.

Saw him in London this weekend. Lacked the bite of the Cupid Deluxe-era shows I saw. Freetown Sound is obviously a deeply personal project but, sadly, I don't think it has the appeal of Cupid Deluxe.
