as big as a prince fan as i always was, i considered rick a guy who had all the talent prince did but not the same drive or discipline. always thought that.
Yea that's true. Both had protege acts, great songwriters & performers etc. I think if Rick was as dedicated to the music as P was then I think Rick James would have gone from star to Superstar. | |

i never liked it much either...i always thought it was over the top vocal grandstanding by both of them...it almost feels like theyre singing too loud...nevever was much of a teena marie fan [Edited 6/29/16 18:59pm] |

the interesting thing about "Fire And Desire" is that it was never released as a single,yet it receieved massive airplay on R&B stations.It's now considered an R&B slow jam classic.Rick approved of Motown's decision to not release it as a single."It made more people go out and buy the album",he said | |

Yea that's true about the drug use which resulted in him facing jail time. As Rick was predominately known in the mainstream as a Funk act for Super Freak I wonder where his career could have went next direction wise. Does he become a quiet storm ballader and put out songs ala Fire and Desire or does he switch gears and become like a George Clinton and embrace the Hip Hop culture and do collaborations with the hot acts of the time. Personally I think Rick James strongest suit outside of the Funk jams was his ballads and something like a duets album with Lady T where they do a whole like Marvin/Tammi type record would have been something which would I think have definitely sold to a R&B artist. As by the 90s Funk wasn't really superseded by New Jack Swing and Hip Hop. Even Roger did a more Hip Hop themed record with Bridging the Gap so if Rick put out a Funk based album I don't think it would have sold as by that time Funk was really seen as fodder for Hip Hop samples only. Which is a shame as Rick made a lot of Danceable records which stand up as dancefloor fillers today. | |

THIS obviously would be the song to which I'd smoke those joints..! . also of course YOU & I BUSTIN OUT EBONY EYES (with Smokey) I used to not like at all "fire & desire" but (thanks to Jamie Foxx?) that song has grown on me now..
