Lee Scratch Perry's Vision of Paradise (DVD)
release: July 22, 2016

{2015} For the past 15 years director Volker Schaner has followed Perry on a spiritual and geographical journey taking in Jamaica, Ethiopia, Switzerland and London. Over this period Volker has earned Perry s trust, resulting in a never-before-granted level of access and insight into Perrys fantastical, spiritual world. This classic-in-the-making tells a story of epic, magical proportions that s not a biography, more fairytale documentary and art piece for itself, which is in turns funny, poetic and frequently mind blowing.

In addition to the filmed footage of the man himself, plus an all-star cast of dub and reggae-related musicians, Lee Scratch Perry s Vision Of Paradise is illustrated by unique animated scenes. Using traditional painting techniques, the artist Maria Sargarodschi created imaginary characters of surprising contemporary style influenced by Ethiopian Christian Orthodox Church Art, Lee Perry s imaginary cosmos and the Beatles Yellow Submarine.

The movie also serves as a unique documentation of Lee's now infamous and already legendary 'secret laboratory' in Switzerland, which despite its recent destruction by fire, is immortalised in celluloid.

The DVD extras also include a photo gallery of Lee's creative space in all its chaotic and artistic pre-fire glory. Other DVD extras include a 24 page book, a 30 minute making of documentary, director's comments and over 2 hours of additional unseen scenes.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

By DCist Contributor Teta Alim

According to soul singer Reesa Renee, being a musician in D.C. is much like a special family recipe.

“You go out of state to taste some pork chops but you’re like ‘this ain’t like the pork chops my auntie makes,’” she says.

The Prince George's County native has a lot of love for the DMV and it seeps into her music, which is highly influenced by jazz, soul, and go-go. While her 2012 debut album Reeleaseseemed liked a direct homage to her influences, her latest EP Lovers Rock transforms those sounds into one all her own.

With a music buff for a father, Renee grew up on a steady diet of go-go and other funk sounds, citing Chuck Brown as an early inspiration. Her brother is a producer and she started off writing poetry to his music and singing over his beats. It wasn’t until the deaths of close friends and her struggles with depression and bipolar disorder that she found that music has always been there. And used it as a release.

“I’ve always been an advocate on finding and honing in on whatever your release is,” Renee says.

Her songwriting process begins with focusing on the cadence of her lyrics, much like poetry. Her music has a life of its own. With every listen of “Got Me Loose,” one of the first songs she wrote, there was always something new to discover, whether it’s the way Renee uses her voice or an elusive beat.

“I’m really infatuated with love and relationships,” she admits. Taking notes from Sade, who also has an album of the same name, Renee took this new release to challenge herself with her songwriting, being more vulnerable and hopefully adding a more visual component to go with the music. “Lovers Rock” is about her different experiences in love.

“A lot of people are afraid of love, including myself,” she says. But she thinks this introspection has made her a stronger artist. “That’s what art is, it’s a state of being vulnerable.”

“Lovers Rock” is firmly rooted in the present. While Renee keeps her soulful vocals, the jazz and go-go influences make way for more contemporary R&B rhythms that shift her closer to Tinashe or Rochelle Jordan rather than Erykah Badu or Jill Scott.

For a love album, the high energy is decidedly refreshing; there aren’t any soaring ballads or heart-wrenching pleas, but there’s still a tenderness and deliberateness that comes through the heavy bass beats and curling synths. Highlights include the hypnotic “Controversial,” the jazzy pop flair of “Hello Mama” and the fast-paced reverence of “God Energy.”

Renee doesn’t mess with labels, she's happy to leave the issues of genres and styles up to everyone else. When it comes to her music, it’s all about a feeling.

“Even if they don’t understand it, at least they know what it feels like,” she says.

PREMIERE: YOUNG SUMMER'S "ALRIGHT" IS A SWOON TUNE FOR THE UNREQUITED

PREMIERES

By Kim Taylor Bennett

Reacquaint yourself with Young Summer, a Washington DC-based artist who, back in 2014, dropped a bunch of songs like "Waves That Rolled Under ...nd "Taken" that took flight thanks to deftly assembled synth-pop hooks and Summer's vocals—smooth like cashmere on naked skin and cracking with emotion in all the appropriate places. These songs were lifted off her debut LP Siren, and since then she's been busy doing what songwriters do: writing songs.

Below is the grand unveiling of her new tune "Alright"—her first since 2014. Lifted from her forthcoming EP (due to drop sometime this summer), "Alright" is a lilting, lush pop song. Full of undulating synths, like the wind flipping up a full skirt on a breezy day. A little modern Fleetwood Mac, a lot of longing distilled into three and a bit minutes.

"'Alright" is about unrequited love, loving someone but being unable to confess it," she explains. "It’s the trepidation we all have when we don’t want to get hurt but we can’t help but feel the way we do for someone. One of my favorite moments in the song is the line, 'Am I allowed to love you?' because so often I've felt that way. In that line there is the long awaited relief of a confession.

"'Alright' is a song that articulates fear and insecurity but maintains a protective armor sonically with its confident, glossy production. I love to juxtapose the meaning of a song with its sonic identity. An extremely personal song about fear and insecurity with upbeat, sparkling production is like sneaking vegetables into the listeners’ dessert and also a way for me to distract while I confess."

Brad Paisley Recruits Mick Jagger, Timbaland for New Album

John Fogerty and Demi Lovato are also collaborators on country star's upcoming LP

BY ROLLING STONE May 17, 2016

Its title and release date are still TBD, but we do already know Brad Paisley's next album will likely be his most eclectic. The country star has already released the LP's first single, a provocative, guitar-driven duet with Demi Lovato called "Without a Fight." And now the country star is revealing more superstar, cross-genre collaborators on the project.

Demi Lovato, Brad Paisley
Hear Brad Paisley, Demi ... Fight' »

"Mick Jagger has a song on there with me that's gonna flip you out," says Paisley in an interview with the syndicated Taste of Country Nightsradio show, also listing John Fogerty as a co-writer on the album and hinting at a Timbaland track. "I wanted the collaborations on this record to be collaborations that took me outside what you would typically think."

Paisley joined the Rolling Stones on stage at a 2013 Philadelphia show. He then opened for the rock icons at their Nashville concert last year. As for Fogerty, the two shared the Grand Ole Opry stage last month, in what was a surprise performance by the Creedence Clearwater Revival legend. But it's unclear just how he hooked up with Lovato and Timbaland.

Paisley calls his next album "gritty" and "real," with a track list full of songs about life's realities. It's already off to a record-breaking start, as "Without a Fight" marks the biggest radio "add day" of the singer-songwriter's career. The duet scored 120 adds Monday from combined Mediabase and Billboardmonitored country radio stations.

Out July 15! Amazing voice check her out!

Award-winning songwriter and vocalist Lucy Woodward returns to the Adult Pop spotlight with her long-awaited fourth album and debut for GroundUP Music/Universal Music Classics, Til They Bang On The Door.

The 12-song albums emotional depth, electric energy and personally-charged song craft frame Lucys indomitable voice, described by Marie Claire as brassy, ticklish, and one that will have you hitting Repeat.

Sandwiched in-between originals are a classic from the Nina Simone archive (Be My Husband), and tracks made famous by the likes of Ruth Brown (I Dont Know) and Frank Sinatra (The World We Knew (Over and Over).

Jazz Weekly best described Lucys whole oeuvre, by saying - Her voice … is a pleasant mix of wide-eyed charm and in-the-know playfulness, Like a piece of clove gum, shes got a good kick, and the flavor lingers pretty well afterwards.

Seeing Lucy live in concert, Billboard summed it up best: a performance that fosters an image of the vocalist clinging to the mic stand with one hand, glass of champagne in the other and a faraway look in her eyes, toying sensuously with her audience. Lucys a ball, equally appreciable for fans of melodic sing-along baubles and highbrow aficionados of finely honed musical composition.

Til They Bang On The Door features first single, Kiss Me Mister Histrionics.

1. Ladykiller
2. Kiss Me Mister Histrionics
3. Never Enough
4. If This Were A Movie
5. Too Hot To Last
6. Interlude: Hush
7. Live Live Live
8. Be My Husband
9. I Don t Know
10. Free Spirit
11. Interlude: Afterglow
12. The World We Knew (Over and Over)

MEIKO - Moving Day - Cover Art1000x500

MEIKO RELEASES NEW ALBUM, CONFIRMS PREGNANCY!

Meiko offers her highly-anticipated fourth full-length album entitled Moving Day today. Her first independent LP since her acclaimed 2007 self-titled debut, Moving Day follows her 2014 Fantasy/Concord release Dear You which featured the radio and VH1 favorite “Be Mine”.

Meiko also confirmed today with a photo and a blog post on her official website that today is also the due date of her first child. Read the full post here:http://www.meikomusic.com

The appropriately-titled Moving Day comes after some major life changes for the artist – she left her record label, got married in the summer of 2015, relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville, and, while pregnant, recorded the album in her new home city with producer Joshua Grange (Sheryl Crow, k.d. lang). “The real reason I named the albumMoving Day is that while recording, every time I’d press the guitar up to my belly, I’d feel the baby move. It confirmed I was carrying a little groover, and it all came together.”

Moving Day is closer sonically to Meiko’s 2007 debut than to her two follow-up albums. “I wanted to get back to my roots”, Meiko states. “(2012’s) The Bright Side was a little more poppy, and Dear You was darker and more electronic. I wanted to keep Moving Daysimpler and more intimate, without so many bells and whistles.”

Of the album’s first radio single, “We All Fall Down”, Meiko says, “I wrote it for a friend whose son was diagnosed with brain cancer. It made me sad knowing there was nothing I could do to help, except write her a pretty song to make her feel better. Luckily, her son is now a happy, healthy, cancer-free fourth-grader who is loving life. It’s one of the many reasons I support St Jude Children’s Hospital, because I saw how much they helped my friend’s family in their darkest hours, asking for nothing in return.” A portion of proceeds from the PledgeMusic pre-orders of Moving Day have been donated to the charity.

“The album comes out today, and maybe the baby will too! Not exactly sure what’s in store for me, but I’m confident I’ve made a beautiful record and I’m confident I’ll have a beautiful baby.”

Chloe x Halle: New People Now Concert Summer Series

19 July

Duo Chloe x Halle are scheduled to perform at the People Now Concert Series this summer.

After winning the fifth season of Radio Disney's Next Big Thing competition, the Atlanta-born teen sisters continued to captivate audiences with their eclectic R&B-soul sound.

Gaining millions of YouTube views for their cover of Beyonce's "Pretty Hurts," the duo were eventually signed to the legendary singer's Parkwood Entertainment entertainment and management company.

Their debut EP, Sugar Symphony, was released in April.

Chloe x Halle recently appeared at this year's BET Awards, performing their hit single, "Drop," and also made a cameo in Beyonce's HBO television special for her Lemonade visual album. You can watch Chloe x Halle's live performance at the People Now Concert Series on August 11 on People.com.

Basia / London Warsaw New York 2CD deluxe edition on the way

basia_lwny

Cherry Red are to reissue Basia‘s 1989 album London Warsaw New York as an expansive remastered two-CD deluxe edition at the end of March.

This was the Polish jazz/pop singer’s second long-player and like her debut (Time and Tide) it enjoyed much success in America, in particular.

As with 2013’s expanded version Time and Tide, DJ, composer/producer and general pop music enthusiast Vinny Vero has produced this reboot of the album and amongst the 24 bonus tracks are extended remixes, seven-inch edits, B-sides, instrumentals and even a handful of previously unreleased demos. See the image below for all the details.

London Warsaw New York is reissued as a deluxe edition on 16 March 2015.

Basia / Time And Tide Deluxe Edition

Basia / Time And Tide 2CD Deluxe Edition

Polish-born Basia Trzetrzelewska (pronounced Basha Chechelevska) came to prominence as part ofMatt Bianco in the early 1980s, and together with Mark Reilly and Danny White, contributed to the success of the band’s debut album Whose Side Are You On?

Basia and White both left Matt Bianco in 1985, and spent two years writing and recording her debut solo album Time And Tide. Released in 1987, the record was a success, especially in America where the title track was a top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In the end, six singles were released from the 10-track LP (the CD had a bonus track) across various territories. This resulted in a plethora of remixes, seven-inch edits and the odd B-side. The record became a solid foundation for a successful solo career, and only two years later in 1989, Basia had similar success, particularly in the US, with her follow-up album London Warsaw New York.

A new deluxe reissue of Time And Tide is due for release in May 2013 by Cherry Red Records, and adds 19 bonus tracks to the original album, as issued on CD. See the track listing below.

Matt Bianco / Whose Side Are You On / two-disc deluxe edition

mattbi-whoses

Get up, get out of your lazy bed for Cherry Red Records’ forthcoming release of the first-ever remastered, expanded edition of continental-Latin-Jazz-pop combo Matt Bianco’s debut album.

Whose Side Are You On, originally released in 1984, went platinum in the UK and yielded five singles, most notably the Top 30 hits, Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed, which reached number 15 in the charts and Half A Minute, which peaked at number 23.

At the time Matt Bianco were a trio consisting of keyboardist Danny White and Mark Reilly and Basia Trzetrzelewska sharing vocal duties. When Basia left the group, Reilly fronted the band alone and they went on to enjoy further UK hits with the singles Yeh Yeh’ (number 13) in 1985 and Don’t Blame It On That Girl (number 11) in 1988.

However, that was but a mere trifle compared to Trzetrzelewska’s success as a radio-friendly smooth jazz solo artist in the United States. In the late Eighties and early Nineties, wisely keeping her consonant-rich surname on the down-low, she clocked up sales in excess of six million Stateside known simply as Basia. Indeed, the successful recent reissues of her albums Time And Tide and London Warsaw New York encouraged Cherry Red to give her former band’s debut the deluxe treatment.

This two-CD edition features 33 tracks in total – the original ten-song album plus 23 bonus tracks including all the single versions, b-sides, remixes, and alternate versions that were released during the promotion of the original album. There are 14 tracks that have never appeared on CD before and seven that have never been released before – six demos and a brand-new recording of Half A Minute.

The audio is accompanied by a 20-page booklet with new liner notes, lyrics, detailed track annotations from band members, an illustrated discography, written contributions from producer Peter Collins and mix engineer Phil Harding, plus previously unseen photos.

Whose Side Are You On is released on 17 June.

Remixed & Expanded: The Beatles Live At The Hollywood Bowl due in Sep

1977 live album reboot to tie in with Ron Howard doc

Apple Corps Ltd. and Universal Music Group will release an expanded and newly remixed version ofThe Beatles 1977 live album The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl this September…

The Beatles: Live At The Hollywood Bowl is effectively an entirely new release, directly sourced from the original three track tapes of the concerts. Producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell have remixed and mastered the recordings at Abbey Road Studios, including the thirteen tracks from the original album produced by George Martin, plus four additional, previously unreleased recordings from the concerts.

Giles explains:

“A few years ago Capitol Studios called saying they’d discovered some Hollywood Bowl three track tapes in their archive. We transferred them and noticed an improvement over the tapes we’ve kept in the London archive. Alongside this I’d been working for some time with a team headed by technical engineer James Clarke on demix technology, the ability to remove and separate sounds from a single track.

With Sam Okell, I started work on remixing the Hollywood Bowl tapes. Technology has moved on since my father worked on the material all those years ago. Now there’s improved clarity, and so the immediacy and visceral excitement can be heard like never before. What we hear now is the raw energy of four lads playing together to a crowd that loved them. This is the closest you can get to being at the Hollywood Bowl at the height of Beatlemania. We hope you enjoy the show…”

Added to the original running order are four previously unreleased bonus tracks: You Can’t Do That and I Wanna Hold Your Hand (both from 23 August, 1964) and Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby and Baby’s in Black (both from 30 August, 1965).

This release is being promoted as a companion to the forthcoming Ron Howard film Eight Days A Week: The Touring Years, which explains, but doesn’t excuse, the abomination of a front cover, which is more advert than album cover. Incidentally, that cover photo was taken on August 22, 1964 by The Beatles’ then-U.S. tour manager, Bob Bonis, as John, Paul, George and Ringo boarded a chartered flight from Seattle Tacoma Airport to Vancouver, BC for their first concert in Canada.

The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl will include a 24-page booklet with an essay by music journalist David Fricke, and will be issued on CD on 9 September and as a gatefold vinyl LP on 18 November 2016.

Phil Collins / The Singles

October this year sees the release of Phil Collins The Singles, a new extensive, three-CD compilation…

The Singles charts Collins’ entire solo career from his 1981 debut In The Air Tonight to the title track from his most recent studio album, 2010’s Going Back. It takes in an impressive seven American number ones, plus numerous other Top 10 hits.

It also includes songs from films, such as the Oscar winning, You’ll Be In My Heart (from Disney’s Tarzan) and A Groovy Kind of Love from 1988’s Buster (Collins’ only transatlantic number one single).

In addition to the three-CD set, there will be a 33-track 4LP edition, which is also available as a two-CD set. Nick Davis is again the man at the helm when it comes to remastering. It has to be noted that like the Pure McCartney compilation, there’s little sign of any rarities or those 12-inch remixes that were missing from the deluxe ‘Take A Look At Me Now’ reissues.

Will there be a further ‘mopping up’ rarities set? Seems unlikely, but if you want to cling to hope then in May last year when the ‘Take A Look At Me Now’ campaign was announced, we were told that as well as the album reissues, we would be getting “uniquely curated titles from the vaults”. Note the ‘S’ on titles…

Singles is released on 14 October 2016.
