Bassist Flea previously said that the band were "heading into a new era" as they finished work on the LP.

"We're near the end of it," Flea told Q. "Danger Mouse is producing this time, instead of Rick Rubin. Were heading into a new era and we're really excited."

Asked how the album was sounding, he added: "It's new and different but without sacrificing the good bits of us. There are some songs we already had, and some new ones too. I can't wait to play it live."

Meanwhile, the band have a series of tour dates and festival appearances booked for the summer. Among those dates is a headline slot at Reading ...tival 2016.

For them, it's half way decent. Let's see what else they come with though.

What's In My Bag?: Flea & Amy-Jo Albany (Feb 2016)

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Hmmmm, I don't follow the RHCP much, but I've noticed that whenever their career must be sagging, they throw out albums and songs that all have "California" somewhere in the title and lyrics.

I don't see any California-related songs in this set (unless maybe "The Longest Wave" is a surfing song), so they must be doing well. Good for them!

Totally not feeling any of the 2 new songs... Sounds very dull, lifeless, and completely boring.

And no hooks whatsoever.

Interesting, I haven't really listened to them in huge depth yet but on a cursorary listen I really enjoyed these two tracks. It feels quite weird saying that in 2016 actually, RCHP were one of the first bands that I really got into when I was a teenager, but it's been so long since then and my tastes have moved so far on since then that I haven't given them a listen for ages and completely skipped their 2011 album I'm With You. So if I dig the new album it'll be quite strange coming back to them after what feels like a lifetime of music listening in the intervening period.

Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Love the video and the album. RHCP is a great California band. If you live in SOCAL, you get their vibe.

I wasn't feeling the new songs at first but they have totally grown on me. Bought the new album and it's really good. Worth checking out. Love the Dark Necessities video too.

As an L.A. native and funk/rock follower been a fan since the beginning and followed through all the ups/downs, tragedies, etc. It was a little like following Prince from the beginning and seeing him become a superstar to how I watched the Chili Peppers rise from what many dismissed as a joke to superstars with the Blood Sugar Sex Majik album, one of my all-time fave albums by anyone. That is a funk masterpiece IMO. Although appreciated parts of their subsequent albums they never hit that peak and consistency again IMO especially without Fruciante. Stadium Arcadium comes pretty close, but is more rock than funk for the most part. Post-Arcadium efforts were weaker IMO and now having heard their latest I can't help but lament at how much they have fallen off. All the new record does is make me want to switch to much better albums/tracks of theirs. Love Flea but these boys need an injection of testosterone and A NEW BETTER GUITAR PLAYER. Anyone who thinks the new record is the shit I challenge you to throw on BSSM, Stadium Arcadium, Freakey Styley, Californication, Uplift Mofo Party Plan and hear the dramatic and depressing difference. The new record is not horrible, just incredibly mediocre and unmoving for a once great and original band.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

I agree this album is not it for me. They need their mojo back, pun intended. I also hate to say it, but Josh has to go. Either bring John back or find a more inspired guitar player for Flea to really be able to vibe off of.

i've never been a fan of danger mouse's production, nor rick rubin's really; but i'd have rather heard these songs with the rubin touch. danger mouse is too heavy handed. he's already ruined a couple of what could've been really great black keys albums.

overall, too much strings which might've sounded better/more energetic as horns. too much piano...just kinda blah.

i am impressed by klinghoffer, though. he's definitely no john frusciante; but i think he holds his own. he just needs a better opportunity than this album.

Totally agree about Black Keys, another band I used to be able to enjoy much more with more raw production. Progressing and experimentation is fantastic but moving too far from what makes an act stand out from the field and what it best excels at is tragic lunacy. You gotta hold onto your soul! Like Jack White, he gets it.
