Stevie Wonder

Janet Jackson, Beyounce, Bruno.

Bruno isn't black.

Replace him with Smokey Robinson.

Whitney and Michael were tragedies.

Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Harry Belafonte, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Johnny Mathis, Aaron Neville

Beyonce (like her or not, she's huge and her death would get major coverage), Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. If something happened to Janet it would be big news as well especially in the US.

Aretha and Diana. Areatha because she is the queen of soul and considered an american treasure. And believe me, not only would the services be televised, it would be one of the biggest spectacles you have ever seen, more so than Micheal Jackson. And Diana bc she is the queen of Motown and broke down walls and barriers for black female singers to gain acceptance outside of black audiences.

The age at which they die is also important. Michael, Prince and Whitney all passed at ages we would not expect them to pass.

Also did they "cross-over". I remember when Luther Vandross passed, there must have been two white people at the funeral. eek

Of course, There are artists and singers that might get "media attention" but they won't have or make the same impact as when Michael and Prince passed. There just some celebrities that have a uniqueness about them and touch us in a once in a life time way.

I haven't seen any celebrity get as much media attention as Prince and MJ, regardless of race, and at this point I think Prince might actually be getting more. Not sure if that might not have something to do with how many media outlets now exist online in a 24 hour news cycle, even compared to when Michael died six years ago. Or it could just be that I didn't pay as much attention then, don't know. I would guess that John Lennons death got as much attention in 81, but I was quite young then and the only thing I really remember is that there was a national (world wide?) moment of silence.

To me it is Aretha - absolutely. She has very spritual presence and her singing touches our deepest emotions. Also her story is worth to tell. Stevie Wonder is very respected among the musicians, but younger generation doesn't necessary recognize his work a lot. Are we underestimating the rappers? Probably, yes.

In today's world of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc, I'd say Beyonce or any young black performer that young people are infatuated with like Rihanna, Kanye West, Jay Z, etc. I wouldn't consider them legends, but the way the world works today, you don't have to be in order to get major media attention.

I completely agree with this and not only black artists. Social media has made useless people rich and famous. Just look at the Kardashians. Fortunately, some of us know what real talent it and means. Hopefully there are more young people out there that get this, but I do have my doubts.

Let's face it, Beyonce's untimely death would get round-the-clock, missing aircraft kind of coverage.

[Edited 4/26/16 11:02am]

U got that right. It would be major drama for ever. Her little beehive would all start jumping off roofs.

It's really the untimely thing here. Everyone else listed here isn't young. Sad is different from shocking and unexpected. Prince was shocking and unexpected.

He's going to have 2pac like theories for a long time :/
No matter the ©️, Paisley Park "official can never ™️ prince. He gave that to us verbally on Oprah in 1996. You can't take prince away from us, corporate. I mean O ( + >

I wonder how the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Sly Stone would be recieved? I think George Clinton would get a lot of pub.

my opinion? not as much as they deserve but, in the case of richard and berry, they are elderly and it wouldn't shock anyone.

There is only one QJ. Only one. I agree. His career is the history of 20th Century music, and that is no exaggeration.
