"Work", by Rihanna, being at the top of the charts for 9 weeks, says much about America...

It shows this sick, flawed fascination with absurd, repetitive beats and annoying, I repeat, annoying words, sick fascination with twerking, and now the young kids are growing to this mess of a fuckery that's supposed to be a homage to the Jamaican dance-hall, reggae pop style?

But that's just the way I see it. What do you guys think?

This is the chorus to Work:

Work, work, work, work, work, work
He said me haffi
Work, work, work, work, work, work!
He see me do me
Dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt!
So me put in
Work, work, work, work, work, work
When you ah gon'
Learn, learn, learn, learn, learn
Meh nuh care if him
Hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt, hurting

We all heard cheesy, flunkfuck bubblegum shitsongs that went to the top for the last 5 years but none as desperate, obnoxious and insignificant as this shit!

And THESE are supposed to be the songwriters of this song:

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MUSIC??????????????????????????

I just seen two different videos for that song. Musically speaking, Work is Rihanna's best track since Umbrella. Yes, I said that! cool

I can see and hear the value of the music and the lyrics to the song because I used to attend some reggae/dancehall festivals back in the day. I've never had the opportunity to get free hits of the weed . But it was still fun times. wink

If Single Ladies can be a number one hit, than Work can certainly be a number one hit too. There are a lot of medicore songs that go to number one.

I actually think Work is fun and catchy. *shrugs* The lyrics are simple and are not deragotory or too explicit. Its a mindless song with a catchy beat.

I have heard some pretty bad and awful songs on the radio and work is def not at number one.

Exactly. It's more about the association and vibe as well as the cultural context that comes with it. It is reflective of what people are into more than the content though it isn't bad either.

Interesting comment. I guess there's something to be said for having a song in heavy rotation. I don't think "payola" and "plugola" have died. I think the record companies just pay for heavy rotation, PR, hype, etc. and then "poof" it's a "hit" but people will forget about the song in another month or so.

This is Rihanna's best song, ever. It's a dance hall track. And our boy Monte Moir has a credit in this, didn't know.

I agree sis. I def don't think its the greatest song in the world and it is def a mediocre silly song. I just disagreed that it is the worst song that has came out in years. There are far more worst songs that have gone to number one.

I don't understand how this song
being a hit "says much about America."
Please elaborate.

Oh absolutely! Every generation has mindless songs that are hits and then later will be nostalgia for a certain age group. But, other songs are timeless and are appreciated long after the artist has passed away. I think I read somewhere that MJ still has albums that are in the top selling downloads and sales around the world. That's incredible because it means he's reaching a different audience now than back when he was on top in the 80s.

I was guilty of downloading the song when it first came out, but my god does it get boring quickly as does the video.

The beat is infectious - but I think it's such a big hit because there are so many parodies of it.

'We found love', 'what's my name', 'only girl in the world', 'man down' etc.. are far more superior.

I think the song is something that's probably more fun in the context of a party than listening to it while you're stuck in traffic on a Monday morning going to work smile

My only issue with this song is that it took 7 people to write it and Rihanna wasn't even one of the writers. Otherwise, Rihanna has had far worse on the charts; remember 2010-2012 when you couldn't avoid her if you destroyed every radio in a 10 mile radius? Yeah, I'd much rather have "Work" topping the charts than any of those paint-by-number hits that tainted the airwaves for months at a time.

Furthermore, while it's nothing spectacular, "Work" has a nice vibe to and is sonically interesting even in its simplicity. It's not over the top and is upbeat yet mellow at the same time. The dance hall elements are welcome as well. "Work" isn't record of the year material but it's a nice tune, better still when compared to most of the chart-topping singles we've had.

Aubrey Graham (Drake the rapper) who's featured is Larry's nephew. I know, crazy smile

He's got a new album coming out soon (not Larry, I mean Drake). I always thought he's kinda interesting even though he's ur usual dose of snapchat and twitter rap.

Researchers and whistleblowers said this would happen. They got called conspiracy theorists.

Drake wrote the full track. The others are producers who made the music. Drake wrote other songs for Rhianna and Alicia Keys too. Shame is a Crowley lover.

Rude Boy is mindless and Where Have You Been is below average. I'm not a fan of either track.

To each his own. Where Have You Been is one of my favorite Rihanna tracks. Her performance on SNL is killer
