i don't know much about Miles' life...

Do yourself a favor and read Miles' autobiography ("Miles", 1989) - it's a must.

My mom used to tell me that Miles was the most hateful man she ever met.

I really think Don Cheadle will do this role justice.

eek In what way? And how did she meet Miles, if you don't mind sharing?

I think I told the story here once. My mom dated Coltrane before he became "Coltrane". She met him through my uncle, who was best friends with Percy and Jimmy Heath, (James Mtume's father). She was around nineteen and used to follow my uncles to after hours joints. She met Miles at a place where bebop musicians used to gather called the Woodbine Club and befriended the girl Miles was seeing. She told us he used to go upside her head for little or no reason. One night he sent her for cigarettes and she came back with the wrong brand so he backhanded her clear across the room. Mom hated him for that.

Mom used to sneak out to meet "Trane" as they called him at clubs after my grandfather came home early from work one day and threw John Coltrane as well as Jimmy and Percy Heath out of the house for playing devil music in his house while he was at work. lol

Very much looking forward to see this movie. Don Cheadle is a great actor and I am sure he will do our man Miles Davis justice.

Miles is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I've leant about him as a kid in the eighties when my dad used to play his eighties albums like You're Under Arrest, Tutu and Amandla. I've had the pleasure of seeing the man perform live twice, he was fantastic and the epitomacy of 'cool'.

Last time I saw him play was just 3 months before his death, and he was still the 'Master of Cool'. His band was already playing for like 10 minutes or so and when he came up he slowly strolled to the midst of the stage, trumpet in his hand, big sunglasses on, not paying any attention to the crowd. When he reached his spot at the center of the stage he just turned his head to the crowd while lifting his trumpet up, as a means to greet the crowd. And the venue just exploded with what I believe to be the most excitedly cheering crowd I have ever seen at any concert! And that was before he had actually played a note of music!!! cool cool cool

Later I went back in time and discovered a lot more great Miles Davis records. People can say what they want about his 70's period but I love this experimental electronic phase and the deep deep sounds that came from it. I also admire his older work, and I just love that Miles was always trying new things, that is the sign of a truely great artist.

I have also read his autobiography and it's a very interesting book. Anyway, I am excited about the movie and I hope it will be a great success!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Wow, I had no idea! I bet your mom must've had some great stories about those days.

Re: Miles - Sounds like an a**hole. I must confess, though, I tend to psychologically separate off my favourite musicians' art from what they were like in their real lives - for the entirely self-interested reason that, having dug into a few biographies, I get the gist that a lot of them were dicks....but still I want to be able to keep listening to their music! lol

The flip side of that is that I do hate it when people venerate musicians and put them on a pedestal, as though they were these amazing people who had all the answers, like prophets or something. Already, from the trailer of this one, it does kinda seem like they might do that with Miles here - treating him as the guy who really knows what it's all about, unlike these trifling journalists and label schmucks who we'll see him in contrast with. I hope it's not like that, because I think it would be more interesting to just let us get to know him as a cranky old guy who's smart on some things and not so hip on others, and who's capable of being extremely unpleasant, rather than nobly 'standing up for his rights as an artist' or something; but who also has a phenomenal musical legacy behind him.

She and my uncle had a bunch of great stories. She was a bebop purist so she didn't care for Miles's style of jazz fusion either.

John freakin' Coltrane used to have an actual church on Divisadero Street in San Francisco called "The Church of SAINT John Coltrane." Murals of St. John were painted on the walls and people from all over the world, especially Europeans, used to come to listen to the jazz jams that used to take place for hours on a Sunday. Unfortunately, the church didn't buy the property when it could have and was forced to close when rents were hiked up in the hood. I think it might still be around but not in the musical force like in the 90s, when you could hear the jams from blocks away... I was always bemused by the Saint thing... smile

-- It would be easier if you just stop posting this type of bullshit "What does black cultrue have to do with popularity" If the mainstream has no time for black culture then explain why it keeps getting appropriated by the mainstream? Or have you missed out on that. This movie only cost 10 million to make and I am enough people are interested in it for the film to make a profit unless you have put money in the film it is none of your concern let us poor minorities enjoy our inferior music.

Who said anything about inferior? I don't judge music like a music snob who thinks they have some sort of superior taste. Music is music to me. I don't make threads like "rap music sucks", "Bryan Adams sucks", "music was better in the 1970s", "why doesn't Beyonce go away", "what happened to R&B" etc., or talk about someone was on meth because of a Billy Ocean music video. I also did not say the movie won't make a profit, I said it will not make as much money as Straight Outta Compton. You are the one who's judging music as inferior with those Monkees and Kenny G comments and talking about Elvis' singing in the other thread. I said nothing about Miles music, but that he is not a household name in that a mainstream audience will know his album titles. Psy's video has over 2 billion views and his other videos has hundreds of millions. I'm pretty sure no Miles video has the same amount of views. That is not a comment about Psy's or Miles actual music, but on their popularity with the general public, and worldwide popularity. Popularity is popularity, and if you think Miles music is as well known as Michael Jackson or the Beatles, and that his albums sold as much, and that he has many Top 10 singles, then go ahead.

You made some valid points. It's too bad there are those here with a hidden agenda that try to ruin it for others. They get banned and then they go into the prince.org site discussion forum and complain about things as if they own the site. They act like they are the race experts too. Some of them even start threads defending Bill Cosby - just because he is black. But their true colors come out from time to time and we can see they are just full of hate. Kind of fitting in a thread about Davis - who seems like he was an asshole who hated everyone. Lol. Go figure. Looking forward to seeing this movie though. Cheadle is going to kill it!

Why don't you just stick with country music😳 Kind of Blue continues to sell to almost Sixty years after its release. It is one of the records that changed jazz and to sell about 50k a year plenty of people know about it. Tired of your ignorance about black culture and music.

I have some Miles albums and Sun Ra too, that has nothing to do with mainstream popularity. Sun Ra is not mainstream known either. What does black culture have to do with mainstream popularity or them being known worldwide? Jazz is not mainstream music, it doesn't get Top 40 airplay. It doesn't get talked about in social media like Beyonce, Iggy Izalea and Nicki Minaj. Jazz was mainstream in the 1930s during the swing era. It's doubtful that this movie will will the same box office numbers as the NWA movie. That has nothing to do with me.

Yeah, that 'black culture' comment was kinda harsh. If they keep that shit up, just report them. I have gotten several people banned or suspended for playing the race card. It's sad because instead of actual discussion, it ends up being just baseless accusations that end up halting all discussion or getting threads locked. I think this movie will do well though and will most likely have better acting than Straight Outta Compton.

//Yes because black culture has nothing to do with music at all😳 And people should be banned for mentioning race or culture at all. You both need to get a grip on reality.

Jazz is not played on Top 40 stations because it is not Top 40 music😳 You are actually referencing Beyoncé, Nicky and Izzy in a topic about Miles Davies!!' because some teenager is talking about them on social media when I informed you that "Kind Of Blue" still sells today. Do you think anyone will be talking or buying those talentless chick music 50 years from now? But you think the Monkees are an important group🙄
