Truly shocked and only just heard this, given the time zones, this was announced at the middle of the night here in New Zealand. What can I say, David Bowie was one of a kind and he was my 3rd favourite artist after Prince and MJ (So my favourite non African American artist).

I had heard of him since Fashion came out when I was 4 and my Mum played it to death and have really liked his music when a friend turned me on to it when I was 21 in 1997 (The same year Little Wonder came out). What I liked about him, was his albums in the 1970s seemed to mirror a new sound and look with each album, something another artist would do in the 1980s. Bowie's music was less groundbreaking after 1980's Scary Monsters and Super creeps, pretty much his Lovesexy swansong and ironic was as that album came out, Prince's first classic Dirty Mind emerged.

I feel like he was handing the baton. Prince's multi gender look of the Dirty Mind era very much mirrors David's flirtation with man dresses and Egyptian drag in 1971. The Chronologies are not perfect, but Ziggy Stardust was very much the Purple Rain album and the Berlin Trilogy sums up the Crystal Ball Sign o the Times phase. Never let me down is a great answer to Newpowersoul as both really suck, and Tin Machine is the true NPG Music club!!! Of course the barely known and overlooked David Bowie (1967) album with its camp novelty tracks like the laughing gnome and Love you until Tuesday are reminescent of the slight sound of For You, and the 1969 hit single Space Oddity is reminescent of Prince hitting with I wanna be your lover 10 years later and then 2 critically acclaimed, but unsuccessful chartwise albums until a break through a year ending in 2.

The man who sold the world = Dirty Mind

Hunky Dory = Controversy

The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust = 1999/Purple Rain

Aladdin Sane = Purple Rain/ATWIAD

No actual single releases from TMWSTW or Hunky Dory were hits when originally released, but now songs like Life on mars, TMWSTW, Changes and Width of a circle are considered early classics and rightfully so.

I only have a few albums, but know most of his work well, shocked that he never told us he was dying and like you guys, had no idea he had cancer. I actually thought he was entering a new productive phase in his life with 2 new albums in the past 3 years. Good for him hanging on for another birthday.

I have recently rediscovered David Bowie and was very impressed by the Blackstar song and video. And got very excited that an artist of his age could still sound so innovative, relevant and vital!

This Saturday I showed my friend the Blackstar video and he was equally impressed. Although I realised the new album was quite dark I never even thought about the option that he was dying. I was just in shock when I read the news this morning. Davd Bowie is dead. This cannot be true, this must be an awfully bad joke, I thought. Because David Bowie CANNOT die! If there is any artist that doesn't deserve to die it is him. His artistry, his innovation, his rebellion, his creativity, his avantgardism, his fantastic music, his genderbending (both musically and sexually). We need him. The world needs him.

I suddenly realised what a treasure he really was. He showed us it was cool to be yourself, no matter how you were looking or what you were doing. And he never settled for the easy way. He didn't just do release after release but only came out with new stuff when he felt he had something to say. Even if you didn't like his latest project, at the very least it was interesting. He was an artist pure sang, who managed to be artistic and accessible at the same time. David Bowie's departure is a great loss for the world. His influence and importance cannot be underestimated.

RIP David Bowie, my deepest condoleances go out to his family, friends and fans. May he never be forgotten.

Yep, it seems like he has carefully orchestrated his own death with the "Lazarus" musical looking back on his musical career and the new album "Blackstar" as a final knockout gift to the world. Talkin' about going out with a bang!!!

Maybe speculation is in bad taste (please forgive me), but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he has actually deliberately (actively) ended his own life right after the release of his album. Have a day or two to enjoy reading the raving reviews and then step out, knowing that your legacy is safe, accepting the ineviability of death, actively putting an halt to further decline and suffering, surrounded by your nearest and dearest. That would just be so typically him IMHO, and who would blame him if he did?

However you went David, you are a true inspiration and a legend forever. May you rest in peace.

That's one ugly post. Why bring misplaced negativity in to an obituary thread? If you think Prince's apparent non-action is bad, it's not nearly as bad as what you have just done. As others have said, no-one has to make public comment and not EVERY artist has done so. I think you should be more mindful of the karma of your own actions.

Yeah, I thought that was a tad unfair as well. Bowie hasn't even been dead for 24 hours. I think asking "what does PRINCE have to say about this?!?" is kind of silly. As far as I know, Prince never even cited Bowie as in influence or covered his songs so there's that too.

When Lady Gaga first hit the scene I told a group of people that she's basically doing what David Bowie had already done/was doing. I mean, yes, Lady Gaga was influenced by Madonna no doubt but IMO I think her BIGGEST influence by far was/is David Bowie. No doubt.
