When Performers Bring Fans on Stage...

So, we've all seen it. You're at a concert (not just Prince, anyone) and suddenly a "lucky fan" ends up on stage with the artist because the artist points them out of the crowd. For those of you in the industry, for the most part, this is staged right?

Once at a George Clinton concert, there was a rush to the stage. Dozens of people including yours truly jumped on stage. The security man immediately began throwing everybody off again. But then again, Clintons concerts tend to be a little unorganized...

Nope, not staged at all at least with Prince. I've been on stage with him a few times. One of the times, the pics were on NPGMC. That was luck because I was friends with his photographer Afshin. It sucks that photos aren't authorized but I've seen myself in at least 2 boots from the ONA tour. You go to enough Prince shows where you are up front and he does recognize people and sometimes he pulls you for what I think is your loyalty to stand in line for hours and hours.

In Hawaii, when the fans rushed the stage, I and another guy with Takumi stayed and basically protected the guitars from the mad rush of female admirers. I think that's the last time he yelled for everyone to come up on stage!

That's cool smile I often wonder if other artists stage their fan moments on stage though...

My girlfriend went on stage at a Hammer concert, so no it's not staged.

I pay to see the band/artist, not some hapless pissed up goon doing a drunk uncle dance on stage. Thankfully the artists I like don't tolerate such a thing.

I made the Patti Labelle stuff up from a video posted a few months ago. Prince does not stage it. He actually feels the vibe before calling up people on the stage. At the show I went to 2012, he called a 10 year old girl up on stage and he spoke to her. The reaction on her face was that of utter surprise and delight.

Same with her mother, both clearly did not know it would happen beforehand. Prince's security even ensured they could dance without other fans bumping into them. Everyone was moved including us in the cheap seats by the gesture.

Its staged if there is gonna be some kind of interaction that an artist needs clearance for, like Usher grinding on some chick or Trey Songz humping some girl or Rihanna etc... those are sought out prior by security.

I prefer unstaged moments like...

.

Prince is on some other shit, people know when they get on his stage that means its time to get down.

I have been at Janelle Monae shows where she's let fans on stage for the last song of the encore. One time she called up someone I knew for a dance off - that person was shocked/thrilled; definitely didn't expect it. At another show (Rochester Jazz Fest) she just motioned people to come up and about 50 did, including me smile I think Janelle often looks for people who she recognizes have come to shows before, or else who she picks a cute child or someone who has really been jamming during the concert. It's usually a really nice moment.
