The '90s were better than current music, WHAT HAPPENED?

People used to complain about 90's music, calling it a crap decade way worse than the '80s and '70s but, the way I see it, we are living in a duller version of the '90s, nothing new has been done for the last 20-10 (1995-2005) years, in fact, it has been dumbed down, examples

Shania Twain > Taylor Swift

Nas > Kanye West

Dre sound > current shit-hop

Pearl Jam > Kings of Leon

'90s Madonna > Lady GaGa

'90s Janet > Rihanna or Beyoncé

'91-00 U2 > Coldplay

Daft Punk > David Guetta

Radiohead > Arcade Fire

Blur > Franz Ferdinand

Hanson > Justin Bieber

---

list goes on and on

what do you think?

discuss

I wouldn't say Lenny is better than Bruno though I'm more familiar with Bruno's than I am with Lenny' s.

Whitney is a more apt comparison for Beyonce than MJ is. Everything else I can agree with.

I put Beyonce there due to her untouchable status. Whitney was an amazing talent, but she was definitely real people and weathered plenty of criticism. B can seemingly do anything and gain praise, sales, and overexposure.

Lenny was the jam for a good while in the 90s, then he hit that plateau with all those hits that bascially sounded the same.

What happened? The internet happened, free downloads plus tons of new artists that you have to look for in order to find them because mainstream radio and payola make sure we only get to hear the same old ten or fifteen songs day in and day out.

Ten years from now we might miss today´s sound and complain about the shitty music of 2025...wihle still waiting for stuff from Prince´s vault and the Purple Rain remastered album. lol

Things started to go downhill pretty fast when the mighty Jheri curl became a thing of the past ca. 1987.

2010s are better than 2003-2009, but it don't matter cause when you hit a certain age you're not supposed to like current music anymore, that's the way it's always been.

Hell fucking no. This is the best decade of music.

Tame impala
Arctic monkeys
Arcade fire
St vincent
Grimes
Frank ocean
Miguel
Bruno
Janelle monae
Kendrick lamar
Jake bugg
Unkown mortal orchestra
Ariel pink

Basically people who make damn good and diverse music, the 90s just got this hip'hop R&B or grunge sound thats just so familiar and cliché now, if ya take any album by FKA Twigs and listen to it in 2098 it ll make sense,

Nostalgia it's what happens, it's the same argument every end of every decade, of course music is always better as avery decade past away, but it's not as dramatic as everyone pit it. The next decade we'll have the same thread talkin about how great Bruno Mars sounded, but what can i say i was just 11 when the Almighty 90's fade away, so...

I know a LOT of people in their twenties who think that music (on the charts NOT local unheard of acts) was better in previous decades than now...

it's not a '90s vs previous music thread, it's mostly a '90s vs post early '00s thread

and I stick to my guns: 04-... music is a lame copy of 93-03 music
