So, is the Weeknd now a sellout?

Dude has a number-one hit, enough to consider his MJ-copying ass a sell-out!

Did you even see his MTV VMA performance? Bro basically copied Billie Jean's moves and added pyro! dude had to go for THIS lol lol lol :

Yeah, no wonder he can't feel his face with that load of hair on his Maxwell-looking head.

This is what our bro Abel looked like before selling out:

What the fuck? That has been the lamest thing since R Kelly considering Ignition one of the best songs of all time.

I really couldn't get into him before he broke big. He had a nice song on R&B last year before "Earned It" broke.

I agree "I Can't Feel My Face" sounds just like what a more lucid Michael Jackson would come up with. And I love it!

I've been underwhelmed by the limited amount of material I've actually listened to thus far. His stuff seems a little too mopey for my taste.

It appears so. However, this is one of those instances where "selling out" isn't all that bad.

First off, he has an AMAZING voice. Not everyone is into his vocal style, but I think near the entire world can admit that he has some beautiful pipes. But even though I was a HUGE fan of his voice, I couldn't really get into his early mixtapes back when he was a cult act. Mostly because it seemed every single one of his songs was downtempo "indie dub" R&B style, depressing, with downcast lyrics. I still had a lot of respect for his talent but I kind of veered off him for a year or two.

Then he released his first real album, "Kiss Land." Shit went hard. He was singing uptempo jams alongside some pretty ballads too, and the result was a cohesive album. Even then, he was kind of underground. But listen to his "Beauty Behind the Madness" disc he just released... amazing. He's started to make much more varied music, and I'm starting to get into the original mixtapes. The guy has so much talent and even though it's tiring hearing every new hot R&B act be called "the new Michael Jackson", I totally understand where the comparisons come between these two and the review calling him "the songbird of his generation."

So yeah, he did sell out. The VMAs, Ariana Grande's song (I loved it btw), and such, but I'm happy that homeboy is finally getting the mainstream credit he deserved. Critics loved him, but no one knew him. Now it seems that EVERY person in the age 15-20 love this guy. Everyone's playing his music and trying to style themselves after him and his depressed-serious-druggie facade (which he responded to in the song Kiss Land... "this ain't nothin' to relate to...") He's a hit amongst audiences. And he deserves it.

Now he has the option to go down a negative plastic route and try to be the biggest and best like people such as Katy Perry and Madonna, or follow his muse like George Michael and Prince. We'll see.

Check out his last two CDs.. "Kiss Land" and "Beauty Behind the Madness"... far less mopey+depressing.

He weaves tales of wanton lust, self-destruction and debauchery with such deftness and darkness that I'm convinced he's doing more than projecting a stage persona.

Is there ever an instance where a lesser known artist suddenly becomes popular and isn't accused of "selling out"? lol

If you will, so will I

Great song! In fact in the Top3 of the smash hits of the summer.

Also, yes a great MJ rip very well done! However, in the end this guys is destined as a one hit wonder.

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Again, I haven't been that impressed with Miguel. I liked "Kaleidoscope Dream" okay, as well as "Adorn," but do you all have any specific song recommendations?

In that case, he ought to write better songs. Wildheart is not in the same class as the Weeknd's latest.

YES!!!! and i'm not one to even say that often.

Picture it... 2012. The weeknd, miguel, and frank ocean. All have GREAT projects that come out that year! i was so excited for this new alternative r&B that was on the rise. Then Miguel started doing some great features biggrin Frank.... is a hermit lol and The Weeknd came out with his debut in 2013 and it was shit.

Fast forward to 2015... Miguel makes a fucking great r&b rock album. And it doesn't get too much attention outside of his core fan-base. Frank is still keeping us thirsty waiting for his next album to come out. And the Weeknd is doing shitty pop songs -.- gah that 50 shades song was fucking horrible! and so is his new can't feel my asshole song.

The Weeknd had a dark sound! i thought i was gonna get some atmospheric hip-hop with his new albums. Instead he turned into generic pop music confused what a fucking wasted potential!

Don't get me wrong, I like his voice and enjoyed some of his earlier work, but it is dark as the pits of Hell, and I just don't find drug use cool.

These are songs from mixtapes which are quite hard to source otherwise I have loved almost all of Wildheart. If you need recommendations for that album I would say leave, gfg, beautiful exit, coffee, destiando a morir, face the sun. i take it you've heard all of his first album.

miguel is sort of like prince in the unreleased sense a lot of what he never properly put out is quite amazing and could easily be mistaken for something on an album.
