Is this satire of Uptown Funk?

.

The first guy was rapping and it was kinda groovy, I was thinking "I bet this rap would sound good if he was singing" then he started that thing all the new rappers do where they talk all fast like they're explaining something complicated. Then the second guy was singing and I was thinking "I kinda wish the rapper came back". He kept talking about and sounding like other artists that I'd rather listen to. Its like a crappy rap Bohemian Rhapsody about nothing. I was also hoping they'd break into Petula Clark. Cmon its called Downtown.

I can't argue about any of your points, but apparently it's not a satire of Uptown Funk as it's reported they've been working on this song for a year!

But what I DO know is people are going to eat this sh!t up!

Probably even you and me.

This song seems to go everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The guy who sounds like MJ is slightly odd. I wish he had just stuck with the old skool hip hop vibe for the entire song.

I like the motorcycle with the moosehead.
The song I'm not so sure about.

Nice to see Freddie Mercury in drag again lol

Disturbing, funky at times, just the way Macklemore always does it. And Ryan Lewis SURE KNOWS how to direct a music video, kudos to his originality.

But y'all gotta admit this would've been the same if it wasn't for Uptown Funk, you can just see the influence of the music video and song itself.

Identity

I don't really like the song as a whole; however, the chorus has a dreamlike quality to it that puts it over the top.

I was with it until about 80 seconds in.. then they added a muted trumpet (synth) and it kept changing until I didn't know if I was listening to the same song anymore.

Instead of an album like Thriller that had songs formatted to every style of radio format, it sounds like Macklemore tried to cram it all into one track.

Macklemore is the Pat Boone of rap.

Seems like 2 very different, good songs, vying for air time. As much as I like the Eric Nally appearance (how he manages to sound like Cher, Michael Jackson and Freddy Mercury rolled into one is beyond me) - I spent the second half of the song missing the vibe of the first half.

So who is Eric Nally? Homeboy seriously sounds like MJ. What an odd song. I agree it seems like two tracks rolled into one. I need more time with it but i mostly think i like it. I love that he has Melle Mel on it but wish it mostly stayed in that groove. It's certainly original. I'll give it that.

I'm really starting to like it.

It's fun and swooping towards the end.

Macklemore bringing the fun to hip hop.

Macklemore isn't bringing anything to hip hop with this crappy pop song. The genre doesn't need him to be "fun".

I meant to say that hip hop doesn't need Macklemore in order to be fun. Sorry for for the confusion.

Songs about stores and implied shopping or spending tend to get licensed to play in mega-retail chain stores where people shop. At least thats what I noticed when I worked at one.

Big Daddy Kane Defends Macklemore’s Paying Homage In “Downtown” Video

Macklemore recently put on for the old school with his new single/video combo in “Downtown,” which featured pioneering MCs, Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz.

Naturally, as with all things Macklemore-rel...these days, the move was met with scrutiny and accusations of the Grammy Award-winning star attempt to latch on to a Hip-Hop period that was pure gold to obtain credibility.

Although said points may weigh in some validity, the legendary Smooth Operator himself–Big Daddy Kane, is defending the “Thrift Shop” artist for everything he’s doing for the culture in 2015.

In a recent Instagram rant following the MTV VMAs, Big Daddy Kane outlined his stance on the subject, loud and clear.

“REAL TALK!!! I don’t see one artist in the game that put Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee or Grandmaster Caz on their new song or let them perform on the VMA’s (Including Me) but people wanna have a problem with @macklemore for paying homage to them?,” he wrote. “We don’t acknowledge our own & get mad when another color does. Now if one of them passes, then we wanna post shit about them, say RIP & get t-shirts with their picture. FOH!!!!!!! Learn about your history & preserve it now. If not, SHUT THE F*CK UP!!! To me this is about real pioneers getting recognition in today’s society.”

A co-sign of this magnitude doesn’t come around often so naysayers should take notice. Also, “Downtown” has been steadily climbing the Billboard Charts since its debut.

The video for Macklemore’s “Downtown” can be found in the Daily Visuals for August 27.

I agree with Kane.

Song sucks, though. neutral

I do like that he featured Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel and Kool Moe Dee, both on the song and in live performances. And it is probably my favorite part of the song.

I don't love Macklemore's music but I do have a ton of respect for him for many reasons. Giving props to the veterans is one of them. Also, the attention he brings to LGBT issues. I can't thing of many in the hip hop world who do either of those things.

I find the verses to this song a lot more pleasing than the chorus. The singer sounds like he's coming unhinged, which sort of takes me out of the groove.
