Tyrese Has The Number One Album In The Country!

The No. 1 Album in the Country Belongs to Tyrese

The turn-of-the-century R&B star and 'Fast & Furious' stalwart has his first Billboard 200-topping LP

By: Andrew Unterberger // July 19, 2015

In the late ’90s and early ’00s, Tyrese Gibson was one of R&B’s bigger solo stars, going platinum with his self-titled 1998 debut, and hitting the Hot 100’s top 20 three times. But as the ’00s progressed, his radio airplay dried up, and these days, you might know him better for his acting work — particularly in the first three Transformers movies, and four of the seven Fast & Furious flicks — than his music career. (In fact, the last time you read about him as a singer might’ve been that bizarre Instagram video where he promoted his latest album by comparing a woman passed out in public to the state of R&B.)

But about that latest album — it’s now the No. 1 album in the country. Billboard reports that Tyrese’s Black Rose will indeed debut at pole position on this week’s Billboard 200, with 81,000 equivalent units (including 78,000 in straight sales), making it the first of the singer’s seven studio albums to reach the top spot.

On the surface, this is a pretty confusing turn of events for a dude who hasn’t even appeared on the Hot 100 as a lead artist since 2003. But it’s not without explanation. First, as is usually the case when an album makes an unexpected appearance on top of the charts, it was something of a slow sales week. With no particularly strong new releases this week to provide competition — the Kidz Bop 29 compilation was the biggest threat, debuting at No. 4 with 41,000 equivalent units sold — Black Rose was able to cruise to the top fairly easily. (This despite only selling 2,000 more in its first week than the singer’s last effort, 2011’s Open Invitation, which only debuted at No. 9.)

Also, despite no longer impacting Top 40, Tyrese has done well in transitioning to a more adult market. His 2013 collaborative album with fellow grown-man crooners Tank and Ginuwine, was well-received, hitting No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and receiving a Grammy nomination Best R&B Album. And “Shame,” the Jennifer Hudson-featuring advance single off Black Rose, has subtly been creeping onto the airwaves this month, not only reaching No. 2 on the Adult R&B charts, but also climbing to No. 13 on the overall R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay tally — no small feat for an old-school soul single in 2015.

Finally, yeah, it probably helps to play a big part in two of the biggest film franchises of the 21st century — especially when the latest, this spring’s Furious 7, was maybe the most successful of all of them. After all, if Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth can spend 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 using the movie as a springboard, why shouldn’t Tyrese get to top the album charts for a minute, too? Shoulda waited a couple months before dropping Ludaversal, ‘Cris.

Ty is sangin on "Shame"...I Loved it the first time I heard it, had to crank it up...I'm shocked to learn that he has 7 Albums...Wow...That's more than enough to come out with a Greatest hits CD...More thank anything he got that call from The Godmother of Soul...

"Instagram message 7/15/15 ...Wow That life changing musical moment when momma Patti LaBelle sends for you to come to her house for a home cooked meal and a private #BlackRoseAlbumListening yup... You know you've done right when OUR legends and Icons get excited about R&B Soul MUSIC."

I bought his very first album which was hott, but since then, he's been hit or miss for me. The man has the pipes, but he seems to have issue falling into the same formula that Avant, Joe, Donnell Jones, Case, etc. have: new album, same lackluster flow with stale lyrics. I'll listen to some snippets of this new album to see if it's any good.

Its a long way to platinum but at least #1 will have some variety now that barely no one is buying music. I'd like to see Charo top the list for once.

It's a new day this album isn't going to even go gold, it has no shelf life. Music has a sound byte memory with people now. This was like when Amos Lee had debuted and most of America were like who the hell is Amos Lee the album sold about 200,000 since its release debuted at number one with I think the lowest ever total too, but like I said the days of platinum are way over and gold is looking like a dream.

Love all these guys but I have to disagree on Donell Jones. All his albums are amazing. I havent listened to the Lyrics one though. I think he is sooo underrated. I am happy for Tyrese, I really enjoyed his first album.

nod I know what you mean. Most of these guys make albums that are predictable, boring and formulaic. No surprises whatsoever.

Calvin Richardson co-wrote the Charlie Wilson Babyface produced "There Goes My Baby". He also worked with Raphael Sadiq rolleyes & Angie Stone whom she added another notch on her belt by him being another young kat that dipped in her love sea. He also during the brief romance recorded a duet with her called "More Than a Woman" that appeared on her "Mahogany Soul" album.

He has paid his dues & finally has gotten a hit record after five unnoticed albums. It's refreshing to hear his rich , soulful, testosterone driven voice on rnb radio now. Compared to these latest rnb whiney voiced singers like Trey Songs & Miguel(very talented though otherwise).

I knew there was some bad blood between Calvin and Angie but I didn't know
they had an intimate relationship. She was trying to put him on at J Records and give him some promotion on Saadiq's Instant Vintage album. According to her he borrowed money from her and used it to secretly secure an album deal with
Hollywood records. I believe she took him to court over the money.

I slept on Donell for a long time. I purchased a Best Of CD a few years ago. I found that I liked all of the songs on the disc and eventually ended up purchasing all of his full length CDs! But, that last album, I wasn't diggin' on that one. He was trying to sound too young and trendy with that one. But, vocally, he is very talented and incredibly underrated.
