Britney Holmes - Finish Line

DJ JUSMUSIC THU, JUN 25, 2015 MUSIC, R&B MUSIC

After catching our attention with the song, "Good Time," newcomer Britney Holmes returns with the new single, "Finish Line." Produced by Kenny Murphy, the new offering boasts a funky, nostalgic vibe as the singer-songwriter delivers catchy and soothing lyrics about love.

"Finish Line is about consistency in a relationship, will you do what you did to "get me" once you've "got me"... and crossed that "finish line", explains Holmes. The song is also featured in the comedy & drama film, "Sister Code" (Starring Amber Rose & Drew Sidora).

Britney, who is currently wrapping up the final stages of her debut EP, started her career as an actress in the PBS kids show "Wishbone," playing “Emily Barnes,” and developed her music career along the way. Her sound is inspired by artists like Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Aaliyah.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Bill Wyman

Back to Basics

added: 21 Jun 2015 // release date: 22 Jun 2015 // label: Proper Records

Bill Wyman - Back to Basics -

Wasn’t really expecting this from Bill Wyman; a solo album after 33 years! A Rhythm Kings album yes, they are pretty regular, but a full blown solo effort, no this came out of the blue and from his archives. There’s not much of the Rhythm Kings about this collection, it’s more introspective and personal, looking towards the likes of Tom Waits and the midnight hour, than goodtime trad. R&B.

The easy going, slightly sinister, What & How & If & When & Why kicks off the album. And that easy going nature is pretty much the template for the album. It’s not a challenging listen by any means and not many songs really stand out, at first.

After a couple of spins She’s Wonderful and the re-recorded (still caustic) Seventeen wheedle their way out the collection, closely followed by the Latin American flavoured November, and the bar stool, whiskey and fags closer I Got Time

Wyman’s functional, semi-spoken vocals are to the fore and as he saunters through various, primarily American musical genres, a distinctly English ambience begins to emerge. All told, there aren’t any fireworks here, just a warm smouldering fire in the hearth.

Bill Wyman, Back to Basics Track Listing

“What & How & If & When & Why”
“I Lost My Ring”
“Love, Love, Love”
“Stuff (Can’t Get Enough)” (Back to Basics version 2015)
“Running Back to You”
“She’s Wonderful”
“Seventeen” (Back to Basics version 2015)
“I’ll Pull You Through” (Back to Basics version 2015)
“November”
“Just a Friend of Mine”
“It’s a Lovely Day”
“I Got Time”

New Music: Avant – Special

R&B veteran Avant is back with a new single entitled “Special.”

Found on his upcoming album The VIII, the new love song finds Avant serenading his special lady as he professes how much she means to him.

Singing out, “We didn’t get married, but it feels so special / This ain’t no baby, but it feels so special,” the new single is perfect if you’re looking for an ode to your lovely lady.

The VIII hits stores this September and “Special” is available on iTunes now.

Usher, Lauryn Hill, Jazmine Sullivan and More Pay Tribute To Nina Simone

image: http://rnbmain.thisisrnb....isited.jpg

nina-revisited

Legendary songstress Nina Simone is receiving a tribute from some of R&B’s most talented superstars with the upcoming compilation, Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone. Inspired by the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? the July 10 release will feature contributions from some of your favorite artists.

Hosting sounds from Lauryn Hill, Usher, Jazmine Sullivan, Mary J. Bilge, Common, and many more, the album features the stars performing covers of multiple tracks from the late Simone. We previously heard Lauryn Hill’s soulful performance of “Feeling Good,” and now she debuts her rendition of “Black Is The Color of My True Love’s Hair,” her second of six covers on the project.

In addition, Usher gives us his bluesy take on “My Baby Just Cares For Me,” and Jazmine Sullivan brings down the house with her reggae-inspired cover of “Baltimore.”

.

New Music: Jaheim – Back In My Arms

R&B veteran Jaheim is ready to give you a new favorite for your lovers playlist. The Grammy-nominated singer has returned with the touching new ballad “Back In My Arms,” which is the first single off his forthcoming new album, due out this fall/winter.

Jaheim refuses to let a past love go as he sings about having faith that they will be reunited once again. He recounts details of their relationship and shares that he still has his ex’s photo in his wallet.

“If you let me, I believe that one day you’ll be back in my arms / I don’t care how long, I’ll just keep holding on until you are,” he croons.

Earlier this year, Jaheim signed a new record deal with BMG Primary Wave, joining Eric Benet, Melanie Fiona, Jagged Edge, Deborah Cox, Goapele, Calvin Richardson, and many others.

Take a listen to his smooth new single below, and if you are feeling it you can pick it up on iTunes now.

Prince - HARDROCKLOVER

ELLE BREEZY WED, JUL 01, 2015 MUSIC, R&B MUSIC0 COMMENTS
Prince - HARDROCKLOVER

Prince always knows how to fuse R&B, funk, and rock together, case in point, his latest song “HARDROCKLOVER.” His band 3rdEyeGirl backs him up on this rock tune which has an R&B groove.

On the song, The Purple One compares his wailing guitar chords to screams of ecstasy from his lover. “Turn my guitar up/ So I can make this woman scream / Ain’t no rapper trying to be a singer/ Come on, make a move … "Sade and Babyface / R&B ain't got no place / Put some hard rock on / You better cover your ears 'cause you're 'bout to hear a woman just scream."

Yes, he did just minimize rhythm and blues. But being an R&B site, we won’t hold that against him, though, because this one grooves!

“HARDROCKLOVER" follows his tribute song “Baltimore” in honor of the people of the city in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray’s at the hands of police.

Leona Lewis reveals the track listing for her 'I Am' album

On June 29, 2015, Leona Lewis revealed on Twitter the track listing for "I Am," her fifth U.K. album. "I Am" is set for release on Sept. 11, 2015.

Here is the track listing:

1. Thunder
2. Fire Under My Feet
3. You Knew Me When
4. I Am
5. Ladders
6. The Essence of Me
7. I Got You
8. Power
9. Another Love Song
10. Thank You
11. Thick Skin
12. The Best and the Worst
13. I Am (Acoustic)
14. Thunder (Acoustic)
15. Fire Under My Feet (United Studios Session)

As previously reported, the music video for "Fire Under My Feet" (the first single from "I Am") premiered on May 11, 2015, the same day that the single was released to radio in the United Kingdom. "Fire Under My Feet" went on sale on June 6, 2015. "I Am" is Lewis' first album on Island Records. Her previous albums were released by Syco Music/Sony Music.

On April 14, 2015, previe...erformance in London, according to the Daily Mirror. Lewis reportedly performed five songs (including "Fire Under My Feet") from her fifth album. In December 2014, Lewis posted a 38-second acoustic video of herself performing "Fire Under My Feet" on a piano and accompanied by a drummer.

In September 2014, Lewis revealed in a hand-...o her fans why she parted ways with Syco Music, the record company co-owned by Simon Cowell and Sony Music. Lewis posted the two-page letter on her Twitter account on Sept. 5, 2014. In the letter, she has admitted that this new chapter in her career has been an emotional roller coaster for her, with more lows than highs, and she's been battling depression.

She also revealed that one of the reasons for her split from Syco is because the company was pressuring her to do an album that she felt was not true to herself. She also says that things got so ugly that a person or persons (whom she does not name in the letter) "threatened" her to not leave Syco or else they would make it look like she was dropped from the company. Representatives for Syco have not commented on Lewis' allegations.

Lewis was the winner of "The X Factor" U.K. in 2006. Cowell was her mentor on the show, and he signed her to Syco Music, which released four of Lewis' albums in the U.K. and other countries and three of her albums in the U.S.

In June 2014, Lewis annou...rsal Music. Cowell tweeted this statement at the time: "Congratulations Leona. We had seven great years together and now wish you all the best for the future. You put X Factor on the map."

In a press release, Lewis commented: "After seven incredible years at Sony, I feel honored to be given the opportunity to sign to perhaps the most iconic label of all, Island Records. To me Island has always been a label where artists can really flourish and are encouraged to express themselves. Island stands for quality music and signing with such a legendary label is really like a dream come true for me. I can't wait to start making music with my new team."

Details have not yet been announced about Lewis' first album with Island Records.

In her open letter, Lewis stated:

"It has been quite the rollercoaster year. The emotions I have felt have been more powerful, in both a positive and negative way, than any other time... in my life. At some points I felt extremely depressed and other times experiences amazing highs, but it got to a place where the downs were outweighing the ups. So I am writing this letter to anyone who has ever felt the same way.

"Someone told me that worrying is like always standing under an umbrella in case it rains. You never get to stand in the sun. I worry too much. I worry about friends and family, I worry about being far away most of the time and missing out on life with them. I worry about the future, work, how I look, the images of horror on the news, the way humans treat other humans, animals, the environment. At times it seems absolutely overwhelming and I spiral to a dark place. But then I see images of a man saving a dog from a flood or a peaceful protest standing in love against big army tanks. I began to find that sitting quietly and meditating helped still the madness.

"One of the major changes was taking the high step away from Syco and Sony. Like most relationships we had our good times and our bad. I will always be grateful for what we shared and for the lessons I learned.

"After several years, I thought about leaving over and over again. I was terrified of walking away from a somewhat secure relationship, even though I know that we were no longer right for each other and at times even bad for each other. However, I clung to the safety net I had grown so attached to.

"One day, everything changed. For my fifth album, I was asked to make a record that would not have been true to myself. By all means as an artist in this climate, I was thankful to get the chance to even make another record. But I cannot make music that does not speak to my soul, as scary as it seemed. I could no longer compromise myself, and so I decided to leave.

"I was threatened with the fact that if I left, it would come out that I had been dropped. That cut deep, but by this time, nothing could stop me from walking away. The end of a relationship can really burn, but underneath it all, there is still love there.

"Change is uncomfortable. It's sticky, and churning, and can be painful. It can turn your world upside down, and you either sink or swim. I chose to swim, I chose to go through it, and honestly, I'm not sure where I'll end up, but one thing I am certain of is that I've stayed true to myself and I've followed what my heart says is right.

"So whatever the future may bring, I am ready. To know you are on this journey with me is so comforting. Thank you for being right here with me."

Until the boy band One Direction came along, Lewis was the world's biggest-selling act to emerge from "The X Factor." She is best known for her international smash hit single "Bleeding Love." However, her music sales have declined with each subsequent album.

As part of her "X Factor" grand prize, Lewis won a record deal with Syco/Sony Music. (In the U.S., her music was released under the Syco/J Records and later under Syco/RCA Records, which are all owned by Sony Music.)

Lewis' last album released by Sony Music was also her first Christmas album — "Christmas, With Love," which was released in the U.S. and Canada on Dec. 3, 2013. The album's release in Europe was on Dec. 2, 2013.

According to chart rankings announced by the Official Charts Company, "One More Sleep" (the first single from "Christmas, With Love") was a No. 3 hit in the U.K., while "Christmas, With Love" reached No. 13 on the album chart in the U.K.

In the U.S., sales for "One More Sleep" and "Christmas, With Love" have been dismal. "One More Sleep" failed to make it on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while "Christmas, With Love" debuted at a lowly No. 113 on the Billboard 200 chart.

"Glassheart," her third studio album of new material, failed to go gold in the U.K., where it was released in 2012. Her first album, 2007's "Spirit" (featuring her biggest hit, "Bleeding Love") went 10 times platinum in the U.K., while her second album, 2009's "Echo" went double-platinum in the U.K.

"Glassheart" sold only about 70,000 copies in the U.K., which was enough for it to reach silver certification, but it is far below the sales that Lewis used to have. "Lovebird," the second single from "Glassheart," flopped in the U.K. and didn't make it onto the Top 100 singles chart.

There are no plans to release "Glassheart" in the United States. Lewis' previous single released in the U.S. was 2011's "Collide," which failed to make it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Collide" (a collaboration between Lewis and Avicii) was a No. 7 hit in the U.K.

In 2013, Lewis parted ways with Modest! Management, which represents several "X Factor" U.K. alumni, including One Direction, Olly Murs and Little Mix.

Lewis is the latest of several former "X Factor" U.K. winners who are no longer with Syco Music/Sony Music. Here's an update on where these winners are at, in terms of their signing status:

Steve Brookstein ("The X Factor" U.K. winner in 2004): Dropped by Syco/Sony Music in 2005, after one album. He is still unsigned.

Shayne Ward ("The X Factor" U.K. winner in 2005): Dropped by Syco/Sony Music in 2011, after three albums. He is still unsigned.

Leon Jackson ("The X Factor" U.K. winner in 2007): Dropped by Syco/Sony Music after one album. He is still unsigned.

Alexandra Burke ("The X Factor" U.K. winner in 2008): Parted ways with Sony Music in 2013, after two albums. She is still unsigned.

Joss Stone shares video for 'The Answer,' dishes about new album

(Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Later this month, British soul singer Joss Stone will release Water For Your Soul, her first album since 2012’s The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2. It’s a record packed with lush vocals that have become Stone’s calling card, but they’re complemented with sounds she picked up while touring the world, and a fresh interest in reggae spurred by collaborating with Damian Marley.

“It was a mental exercise to make it fit and make it feel good,” Stone tells EW. “It wasn’t as simple as ‘Hey guys, let’s just jam.’ That’s one of my favorite things, but it had to be more thought out.”

That sound is front and center on “The Answer,” one of the standouts from Water For Your Soul, for which EW is pleased to premiere the music video. Check it out below, along with our conversation with Stone.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Tell me about recording Water For Your Soul.
JOSS STONE:This album has been going on forever. I can’t even pinpoint when it started, to be honest. We had a few songs that had a little reggae tip—I’ve done songs like that in the past, but I haven’t properly gone there. Then life changed, and I did something else. I did the SuperHeavy record [in 2011 with Mick Jagger and Damian Marley], met Damian, and he encouraged me to continue, we wrote some stuff. I just lived life and started doing the world tour and collaborating with lots of different people and listening to lots of different sounds. I got inspired and said, “Let’s just finish this. Let’s just go with it and add in all this interesting shit that we like.”

You’ve taken a different direction with your new stuff. How would you describe it?
It’s got a world music thing happening. The world tour inspired it. There’s three elements that run throughout, and they’re my three favorite things. You’ve got hip-hop in the beats. (I’m not rapping, you’d be pleased to know.) The sound of reggae flows throughout, there’s a lot of little guitar licks, and the basslines can be quite dubby. Then of course I’m singing, so that makes it R&B soulful.

I wanted to put everything in that I love, then from that we put little cherries on the cake along the way. There’s an Indian flute, a Brazilian beat. There’s Irish fiddles and gospel choirs. I’m trying to add a little bit of life in there, the life that I live. I’m running around the world and I’m collaborating with lots of different people, and I’m learning about different rhythms and sounds and instruments and scales even. I’m trying to pop a little bit of that in there every now and then, but I want it to be complementary to everything else that’s going on. It was a little bit of a puzzle in a way, but I really enjoyed doing it.

You mentioned traveling around the world. What type of music have you been deep into recently?
Some of the people that I’ve met along the way and I’ve collaborated with, sometimes I’m really, really into them. There’s one guy from Swaziland, his name is Bholoja. he calls what he does Swazi-soul and it’s just lovely. I love putting it on in the morning, in fact I’m going to put it on in a moment. This guy, you can hear it in his voice, he listened to a lot to Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading, which I listen to a lot as well. You can hear this in his tone. The fact that he’s a man, on top of that, and that he’s singing with a woman’s tone, that’s a lovely combination. He’s living in Swaziland and and speaking SiSwati, so he sings in SiSwati. It sounds gorgeous and spiritual. That’s probably one of my favorite things that I’ve found along the way.

What was collaborating with Damian like?
Oh, Damian’s lovely. He’s a sweet guy. He’s kind of a special guy. He’s the type of person that when he opens his mouth to speak everybody shuts up and listens. He’s that guy. He’s very clever. He’s got something right special about him, very smart. I like working with him, he’s cool. Although he’s very smart, he’s not always giving his opinion all the time—he’s too smart to do that. He lets everyone do their own thing, as long as they’re letting him do his, which is a lot like myself. I’m not really into pushing everyone and telling them what to do, I just like to let life breathe around me. That definitely seems to me to be what Damian does. In that sense we were like two peas in a pod, in a way.

You haven’t always recorded on your own label, Stone’d. What’s that like?
The label is something I wanted to set up, because A) I want to do whatever I want to do as an artist, of course. Who doesn’t? And B) I’d like to help other people do that too, because I know how difficult it is to find a label that will actually allow that. In a traditional set up, it’s like, “Look, we pay and you do what we tell you to do, like any normal job.” Which would make sense, if it wasn’t a creative job. The issue that I took with that is that, “No no, this is my soul and spirit and words and emotions and all of that bollocks that people go on about.” The fact is, it’s true. It really is very emotional to do what we do. I don’t think I could ever be in a situation like that again.

I would like to help people. We signed a band called Yes Sir Boss, and I thought they were great. They made a beautiful piece of music, an album called Desperation State which is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately that band has broken up now, which is sad, but the time they were with us it was wicked. They toured about then were like, “Yeah, f-ck this, we’re not doing it.” But the fact is that with the set up that I’m trying to have, I’d like people to just be free to do that also. If you want to f-ck it all off, then f-ck it all off. If you want to do it, then do it. If you want to sing that song, sing that song. If you want to do this artwork, do this artwork. At the end of the day I just want to help. For me, now, I’m just trying to hash it out and make sure I get it right. You just help it happen and then hope for the best.

Stream Emily King's Gorgeous New Album 'The Switch'

Emily King may very well be one of NYC’s best kept secrets, an artist loved by the learned and accessible to a keen ear. And while her hometown reverence may be right up there with that ill little pork bun and Thai tea spot down on Bayard or Jarobi’s Tribe Taco Tuesday pop-up happy-hour in BK (shameless plug, I know) it’s King’s timeless blend of pristine r&b chops and just a little bit of funk, paired to her brilliant vocal treatments that might just put her a notch or two above your cuddie local culinary treasures.

Last week the NYC-born & bred crooner let loose her third studio LP The Switch viaThe Wall Street Journey, and today she’s announced that she’ll be bringing a live & direct revue of the stud record to six cities down the eastern seaboard. And as someone that had the pleasure of catching an intimate set last week in which she previewed just half of the album, you may rest assured that this is one you don’t want to miss. King and her four-piece ensemble (engineered by Black Messiah‘s BenKane) are precisely the dose of forward-minded funkateers you should be capping off any evening with. Below you will find both a stream of Emily King’s gorgeous new The Switch LP, along with the forthcoming tour dates, which will soon be added to, so keep your ear to the ground for those in the weeks ahead. And if it’s good to ya, grab your own copy of King’s new record on iTunes today.

I like Bad Rabbits a lot. Those guys have a lot of energy and are a very good band.

Would love to see these guys live. I've been waiting on a follow up to 2012 American Love.

This new single is hot. I just ordered Tamia on Sunday. Seems like she rounded back into form after her last disappointing release. I'm not a Jaheim fan but I must say this new single may be his

best to date. I've also read that Mint Condition is set to release Healing Season this fall.

Matthew Santos releases latest album 'Into the Further'

July 2, 20155:01 AM MST
Matthew Santos
Photo from Stephanie Bassos

Chicago native Matthew Santos has found great success even if his name isn't instantly recognizable. He's a two time Grammy nominee, can call Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and Jay-Z fans, toured with Lupe Fiasco, and has gained a cult following. He was even nominated for Best Rock Entertainer at Chicago's 2009 Music Awards. Now the singer has his seventh official release under his belt entitled “Into the Further,” an album that shows off Santos' crooning vocals and his blend of jazz, folk, and soft rock for a sound that's attention grabbing, yet soothing.

The album is very atmospheric starting with the brief instrumental “Into the Further,” with sounds of smooth jazz washing over the listener. We don't get to hear Santos sing until “Under the Microscopes,” but it's worth the wait. The track itself reminds you of the subdued pop John Mayer became known for, but Santos' voice is far better as it flutters and coos over the music. No matter if he's singing fast or barely above a whisper, Santos knows how to hold his notes. Your ears perk up as soon as he starts singing on tracks like “It All Works Out,” "Seven Years," and “Second Chances.” One of the best tracks is “Ojos” which begins with dreamy, whimsical music before launching into some unexpected beat boxing. The result is the perfect addition for an evening road trip. The entire LP is a mellow journey you'll be sure to get lost in.

“Into the Further” is out now. Recently, Santos has collaborated with fellow Chicago musicians from Hey Champ and Gemini Club for a side project called MONAKR. Their debut EP is set for a summer 2015 release. For more on Santos, visit his website. You can also follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

Tracklisting:

It All Works Out
Second Chances
Succumb to Gravity
White Gloves
End of the Pipeline (Have a Nice Day!)
Field and Flower
Just to See You (Take 2)

Amber Skye’s upcoming EP will put magic back in music

TIMOTHY ALEXANDER

Timothy Alexander, 22, is an award-winning journalist and social media consultant best recognized for projects with Lady Gaga, Chris Colfer, and Joss Whedon. He is also the CEO and founder of POPULOVE.

Singer-songwriter and television actress Amber Skye is preparing to drop a new EP this summer, and you’re sure to be bewitched.

Although she’s most recognized for roles in CW’s Beauty and the Beast and One Life to Live and NBC’s The Blacklist, Amber Skye’s heart is primarily invested in music. Her 2010 EP was a finalist in Billboard’s songwriting competition, and VH1 featured the singer on a compilation album in 2013. Her 2014 single, “Howlin,” has the potential to be her breakout hit. Amber Skye’s style has similarities to that of Lorde, Lana Del Rey, and recent Sia releases but with mystical undertones and a voice strong enough to kill.

“If I could live in a big house and have my sisters be Lana Del Rey, Florence Welch, and Lorde, I would undoubtedly be at home. Oh, and Stevie Nicks and Debbie Harry would be our cool aunts,” Amber says on her official website.

A struggle for all independent artists is finding the finances to pay producers, sound engineers and studio owners, among other costs. To combat this struggle, Amber launched a Kickstarter project for fans to help fund her upcoming Rivers EP. Fans have already contributed over $16 thousand, but — with only three days left to raise funds — the project is still $1,500 short of Amber’s $18,000 goal. “I’ve had to overcome so much just to get here, including a scary vocal surgery and months of writing, experimenting with colors of new sounds and finding a great production team to truly discover who I am as an artist,” Amber wrote on Kickstarter.
