But Didnt JODY WATLEY do it first ???

Just thinking for a minute here but wasnt Jody Watley the first black woman to start her own record label with Avitone after leaving MCA? And that was years ago. So why is Janet being labeled as the first black woman to do it with Rhythm Nation Records?? I dont get it.

actually, there were other examples before Jody.In 1985,soul legend Betty Wright formed her own record label called Miss B Records. In 1988,she made history when she became the first black female artist to score a gold album on her own label (the album was Mother Wit,featuring the two singles "No Pain,No Gain" and "After The Pain").

These days,it doesn't make sense to have your own record label when hardly anyone buys albums anymore.Janelle Monae has her own label but let's be honest....her own records don't even sell....how can she possibly launch successful acts in this era?

Vee Jay was started in the 1950s by Vivian Carter and her husband. Vee Jay released the 1st Beatles LP (Introducing The Beatles) in the USA when Capitol had initially declined. Also Sugarhill Records was started by Sylvia Robinson.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
