How does new music break?

I'd like to conduct a little survey about this:

When did you last hear a song you liked? And where did you hear it?

Radio and youtube. But both have to be supported by the band performing live. This is how my brothers band do it.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

OK, this just occurred to me:

Did any of you know, that if you like, say, Bruno Mars, it's possible to buy songs from him from brunomars.com ? Have any of you guys ever done this? If not, why not?

how do you find songs on youtube? do you use the "suggested" songs on the right side of the page? like, you're listening to a song you already like, and it shows you some stuff, and you click on one of those, like that.....?

do you realise that that's a computer algorithm at work? does that thought disturb you, that a computer is deciding for you what music you listen to?

The live shows and radio play get people interested in the band/music, some of the audience looks you up on youtube/band website, share the band's youtube with friends etc..

I assume it still by radio for the masses. But Internet radio has taken off so people can now listen to all day music genre of their choice.

I'm a big fan of Soul and R&B music and used to also get my new music guide from Blues & Soul magazine. But now a days I get my heads up on all the new stuff on www.thisisrnb.com and www.soultracks.com websites.

Interesting thread.

These days, I'm introduced to new titles and artists most often through recommendations here or via highlighting through some public radio channel. Over the past couple years, for example, I've gotten to know many interesting artists through NPR Music first Listen.

I'll then go check out their broader catalogue on Spotify or YouTube. If I dig 'em, I'll buy their stuff.

I either click through Youtube videos of genres or artists that I like and then find more links of the same genre or artists, or similar artists and styles.

Or if I am already a bit familiar with an artist and his music, for instance newer producers such as New Zealand´s Ta-Ku, Sango, or Apollo Brown or Bay Area House DJ Miguel Migs, I just click "like" on their Facebook pages and get to hear about the latest news or songs in my Facebook newsfeed.

Radio and TV or even internet radio do zero for me when it comes to discovering new artists.

I don´t even know most of those socalled world famous singers and producers that are at awards shows or in magazine.

-
Sure, these days you have to look and really investigate to find some music that you like but there is soooooo much good music out there that the average listener knows very little about.

And of course being on Prince.org and reading the threads here helps a lot, too.

That´s how I discovered Miguel Migs because there was a post about a song he did with Andy Allo . I found it in the associated artists forum.

Great song, great production. Never was a big fan of Andy but that song really opened my mind about here and made me appreciate other songs with her (with Prince) much more than before.

"SoundHound" is similar to "Shazam." Music recognition software.

Personally, i get stuff from websites like SoulTracks.com, Soulwalking.UK.co. Sometimes you guys point me in a different direction. There's also Pandora. Rarely terrestial radio anymore.

Music videos are premiered on VEVO, the brand associated with Youtube. That's one source.

I rely quite often on "Six Degress of Seperation" to discover new music.

Example: I love Me'shell Ndegeocello. I saw that she produced Ruthie Foster's latest release on a blog and voila! I was hip to Ruthie Foster. Another strategy is via the remix... dig a remix by someone like Joey Negro for instance or Osunlade and you can follow their production trail to all sorts of goodies. I don't like tunes forced on me I'd rather curate my own tastes.

Doesn't the "new" factor bug you? - something I've posted about before over here, I normally absolutely HATE EDM and trance and house and all that shit, but last year, I absolutely LOVED Clean Bandit - Rather Be, after hearing it on TV or whatever....

If the computer is selecting for you, it's only going to give you similar stuff to what you've already heard!!! i.e. obviously, it can't actually Understand the music, so for me, it would never have given me Clean Bandit.....

To me this is DANGEROUS - too much Computer Science (which I actually like), destroying the world!

Should NEVER be allowed to happen.

When you say "internet radio", I hope you're differentiating between a simple normal radio station (such as FM stations simulcasting), where people talk in between songs, and the music is still curated by humans, and "computerised" things LIKE the Youtube recommendation thingy that I've mentioned.....?

(which keep on playing similar stuff to what you're listening now....)

I used to get a lot of new music suggestions from the org, but since this site has slowed down, I used stereogum and pitchfork to find new artists
If you will, so will I
