Really interested to see what they add to the Electric Universe remaster. That album got alot of criticism from fans and critics, but I like it.Times were changing and the band had to adapt to those changes. It's an interesting album with some great tunes.

I remember reading Larry Dunn hated the direction Maurice took EWF in with this album.

The album was just average imo. I thought both ballads were bland and weak. My favorites were Magnetic, Moonwalk, and Sweet Sassy Lady. I thought Moonwalk should have got more love.

I think "Could It Be Right" should have been a single. It has the same type of vibe and crossover appeal of "After The Love Is Gone"....a really good ballad! I am demanding that you pull out this album and listen to that song again biggrin

Maurice was caught in a tough situation.Columbia Records was putting alot of pressure on him."They wanted another 'Let's Groove",he said. But their classic sound was considered old fashioned by that point.By 1983,everyone was experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines.Electric Universe took alot of fans by surprise.I always say that if this album had been done by someone else,it would have been a smash hit.

I remember that too. It's not the Electrofunk MESS every1's makin' it out 2b. It's more like they went the way of all the other bands who were out at that time. If anyone I'm hearing in the mix, I'd have 2 go with The B.B. & Q. Band. It's got it's Electrofunk-ish moments, but it still sticks with an R&B mentality 4 the most part. The ballads, yes...a little on the weaker side as compared with past efforts, but y'know...not entirely bad either. Just avg. A new direction is always a frightening thing. Maurice done okay. I'm excited 4 this remaster, phunkdaddy! smile

Thin Lizzy - Vagabonds Of The Western World

.

Seismic shifts happened between the previous year’s Shades Of A Blue Orphanage and 1973’s Vagabonds Of The Western World.

.

Frontman Phil Lynott was still documenting working class life in the group’s native Dublin, and the band still featured guitarist Eric Bell and drummer Brian Downey, even if Bell was soon to leave; the shift was in the feel of the album. Between Jim Fitzpatrick’s lurid album cover which depicted the band in space, the new, hot-rod-like Thin Lizzy logo, and Lynott’s newly throaty howl, it’s possibly the first Thin Lizzy album on which they truly could be described as a hard rock band.

.

Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit “Whisky In The Jar,” and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music. Check out “Slow Blues” for proof, and decide whether Lynott or the guitars win the wail-off that begins the track.

.

“Whisky In The Jar” had been a bone of contention for the band who felt it didn’t represent them. Pushed out due to their presence on package tours with rockers Slade and Suzi Quatro, it seemed to seal their fate, and their Vagabonds single, “The Rocker,” set out their stall for good.

The weirdness and idiosyncracies of Phil Lynott’s early songwriting hadn’t been ironed out completely: “The Hero And The Madman” saw them try their hand at acid-fried cowboy rock–if such a thing ever existed.

.

After the album, and after Bell’s departure due to ill health and disillusionment with the music industry, Thin Lizzy were reinvented once again. Lynott recruited two guitarists and the band left Decca to record Nightlife for Phonogram.

.

Their big hits and glory years–beginning with 1976’s Jailbreak–were still ahead of them, but, with Vagabonds as a centerpiece, Thin Lizzy’s early years left behind a cabinet of curiosities.

  • 24 bit / 96 kHz remaster from the original tapes
  • 180-gram LP housed in a deluxe gatefold “Tip-On” jacket
  • Book-deep liner notes and rare archival photos

Formats:

  • Single LP of just “Vagabonds Of The Western World”"
  • 2 LP Bundle includes both new Thin Lizzy LPs “Vagabonds Of The Western World” and “Shades Of A Blue Orphanage”
  • 3 LP Bundle includes both new Thin Lizzy LPs “Shades Of A Blue Orphanage”, “Vagabonds Of The Western World”, and Thin Lizzy’s Self Titled LP

.

1. Mama Nature Said

2. The Hero And The Madman

3. Slow Blues

4. The Rocker

5. Vagabond Of The Western World

6. Little Girl In Bloom

7. Gonna Creep Up On You

8. A Song For While I'm Away

The Isley's set looks very cool & didn't know they recorded 'Stay Gold' thought it was a more recent Stevie song. Also Amazon UK have it up for pre-order at £79.99, maybe they've put the price up now?

DAVID BOWIE
FIVE YEARS 1969 – 1973

The first in a series of David Bowie Box Sets to be released on September 25th.

June 23rd 2015 London

On this day in 1971, David Bowie performed for the first time at what was then known as the ‘Glastonbury Fair’. Today in 2015 as the Glastonbury Festival approaches once more, Parlophone Records are proud to announce DAVID BOWIE FIVE YEARS 1969 – 1973, the first in a series of box sets spanning his career.

The ten album / twelve CD box, ten album / thirteen-piece vinyl set and digital download featurs all of the material officially released by Bowie during the nascent stage of his career from 1969 to 1973. All of the formats include tracks that have never before appeared on CD/digitally as well as new remasters.

Exclusive to the box sets will be Re:Call 1, a new 2-disc compilation of non-album singles, single versions & B-sides. It features a previously unreleased single edit of All The Madmen, which was originally set for a US release but was never actually issued. Also included is the original version of Holy Holy, which was only ever released on the original 1971 Mercury single and hasn’t been available on any official release since.

Also exclusive to all versions of Five Years 1969 – 1973 will be a 2003 stereo remix of ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ by the album’s original co-producer, Ken Scott, previously only available on DVD with the LP/DVD format of the 40th anniversary edition of the album.

The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl.

The box set’s accompanying book, 128 pages in the CD box and 84 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen photos as well as technical notes about each album from producers Tony Visconti and Ken Scott, an original press review for each album and a short foreword by legendary Kinks front man Ray Davies.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums and the CDs will be gold rather than the usual silver.

An alternate cover has been created for the 2003 mix of Ziggy Stardust by Ken Scott, which features an outtake from the original Heddon Street photo session. There is also newly originated artwork for Re:Call 1 featuring a 1973 in-studio image from renowned photographer Mick Rock.

I've been in contact with soulmusic.com and they are assuring everyone they are working on repressing the CD using better masters, which will be availalbe shortly. No, the original album gatefold was not included in the CD booklet, which was really surprising to me.

That's a shame! That album had some great artwork although artwork reproduction has never been Soulmusic.com's focus.

Good news on the repress. I'll wait until I can definitely get my hands on the new edition.

It wouldn't be cheap to have to repress either. Particularly for a small label like that. It's disastrous but a credit to SMR that they're at least trying to make it right. Too bad they didn't pick up on the issues before it was given the go ahead to press!
