I Love Shitty Singers Who Are Great Writers.

Yeah having a powerhosue voice is nice and all. But i much prefer someone who's a shitty singer with amazing writing skills. I'm talking Bob Dylan, Bernard Summer (New Order), Kanye West, Billy Corgan (Pumpkins), Dave Mustain, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Kid Cudi etc.

I admire the shit out of theose with amazing voices, musicianship, and writting skill (Bruce springsteen, prince, stevie wonder, curtis mayfield)

But i love raw, nasty, ugly voices the most. Good songwriting mixed with an ugly voice turns my musical dick on. It's like when someone likes scars or stretch marks and sees them as ''hot'' when society says those thing's are ugly. Am i the only one who feels this way?

You can keep Mariah Carey and her 1,000 songs about love, heartbreak, and dick pill poppin.

Y'all know this is just my opinion right?

It's better than a great singer who is a shitty writer! Yeah, I like those rough voices too.
It's all subjective of course. Bob Dylan is an excellent singer. He may not have the most beautiful voice, but he uses it the best he can. Anyone who has heared Blood on the Tracks and feel the pain on that record (or the demos) will agree. But, a lifetime of touring and smoking doesn't help, which makes it all the more remarkable that he is still out there, doing his thing every night.

I don't necessarily think of some of those people as being "shitty" singers per se, more that the inate sound of their singing voice is different to what people conventionally consider "attractive". Tom Waits to me isn't a bad singer at all, just a very distinctive one.

I think I draw the line at Dave Mustaine but that's more to do with songwriting and his personality than anything.

I get the sentiment but if u can't sing.......I'd prefer not 2 attempt the insult on my ears.

Bob Dylan comes 2 mind.

Bob's voice is like fingernails scraping against a chalkboard. But, I think "Forever Young" is one of the greatest songs ever written.

I wondered if Dylan got criticited heavily for his lack of singing abilities in his heyday. He probably got a pass because of his songwriting capability.

Another artist comes to mind is "The Master of Space and Time" Leon Russell great songwriter (A Song For You) but his voice sorry leaves a lot to be desired.

Jim Hendrix never had a great voice either.

Most people that say he's a shitty singer, don't really know his music at all. He sings with great passion and style. And yes, I completely agree that you can hear the pain in many of his songs. He also happens to be the greatest song writer of the 20th and perhaps 21st centuries.

Johnny Rotten's one of my favorite singers of all time - the delivery on that Pistols album is just blistering. He probably has a range of less than one octave. But I wouldn;t want to hear that album with Caruso on vocals.

And Mark Arm from Mudhoney's another one, it's a kind of limited technique but very powerful in its space.

That's like saying you like a D-student with a nice signature. If they're a shitty singer but a good songwriter, then they should just be a songwriter. Write for someone who has the a voice good enough to sing a song. I once got into it with a Macy Gray fan who insisted that I look past the voice. No. I shouldn't have to do that.

Hmmm, i actually really like Bob Dylan's voice...I hate people who use too much vibrato in their voice...that doesn't make you a good singer

We're here, might as well get into it.

Dylan doesn't have too much of ANYTHING in his voice. Its funny when I saw this thread, he came to mind immediately. He really has some killer songs from a songwriting standpoint. I can't stand to hear him sing shit though. Didn't even know he wrote Forever Young, great song indeed, is he the most covered artist EVER?

Either him or The Beatles. I used to watch Absolutely Fabulous which had Wheels on Fire as its theme song. Took me a while to realize he wrote that one too.

Not exactly sure what you're alluding to when you say that, so forgive me if what I say contradicts anything. His personality quirks aside, Dave Mustaine was a total trailblazer. His time in Metallica's early days and those classic 80s Megadeth albums has been ripped off by so many. No wonder he comes off as such an embittered, difficult person who seemingly has a grudge and finds fault in everything. His voice can be cool at times though, usually when Megadeth is thrashin'. On the other hand, when he attemtps to write radio-rock, it can be pretty horrible at times. But you cant tell me he doesnt sound like a total badass on the title track off Peace Sells, and anything off Rust In Peace. Early Megadeth is some of the most influential music ever. Perfect example of shitty singer/great writer.

I went and played a bunch of Megadeth on YouTube and listened to them for the first time in more than probably 20yrs lol I've been singing (whining/screeching??) them most of yesterday to myself. Total blast fr the past and yes he was definitely a trailblazer.

Mariah's claim to Fame is her Powerhouse Voice and songwriting skillz...With that combined her voice reaches the Masses, people from all walks of life...Bob Dylan is a Music Godfather but you're likely to hear a Dylan-cover played on the radio today & tomorrow where as Mariah's voice & original Music will be played Forever and a Day....Those are just the Facts....Same situation with Carole King...We LOVE Carole but when it comes to radio other artists covering her Music will outlast her own recorded work/original vocals..

Not familiar with Bob Dylan's music other than him singing on We Are The World and I find his vocals to be horrendous. But I think I'll check out some of his albums to check out his writing. Other artist like this imo are Sting and Michael Franks I love them both but there voices are not great singers They aren't as bad as Ol Bob vocally though.

^You really should listen to Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde or Blood on the Tracks and you'll find that that We Are the World performance show Dylan at his worst. I always felt Bob should have done what Prince did and not show up at all and just donate a song. Also, his born again Christian album Slow Train Coming shows him in excellent shape vocally.

Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot of Love from 79-81 are considered his christian trilogy. Some really great songs on them. Here's one of my favourites
