I remember hearing something from when Shaun tried to go "dark and edgy" and it wasn't very good. His first album with Hey Deena on it was kind of a hit and remember it sounding pretty close to Leif's albums, so you might check that out.

My own fave heartthrob band of the 70s is probably the Partridge Family - some real good pop songs in there, sung well by David Cassidy. Also innocent and very sugary, but more sophisticated.

Remakes have been common since the beginning of the music business. That's how songs became standards, many people recorded them. The idea of self-writing being important mainly started when the rock press like Creem & Rolling Stone came around.

Now Rod Stewart is doing them. If you look at a lot of veteran acts today, they're the ones releasing remake albums or re-recordings of their hits with newer acts.

I also think modern songs are remade less than pre-1980s songs. Hip hop is one of the most popular genres of today, and the songs generally doesn't really translate to another act. Anybody can sing Yesterday by The Beatles or I Heard It Through The Grapevine, but most rap songs only make sense with the original performer, especially since rappers often mention their names on their songs.

Donny & Marie still perform together and separately, but I think the other Osmonds are mostly retired, although they did a 50th anniversary tour a few years ago.

Try Josie and The Pussycats. One of them is Patrice Holloway, the sister of Motown singer Brenda. Another member, Cheryl Ladd, later became an actress on Charlie's Angels.

My sister was editor of a teen mag called Flip and so I was exposed to all the Bobby Shermans, David Cassidys, etc. Then there was also the Sylvers and a little act known as the Jackson 5.

David resented being stuck with that sugary teeny bopper image the rest of his life...until he got old.

This thread brings back a memory of my friend Betty O. who had this mag centerfold of Rick Springfield taken from her by an anal retentive school counselor, who chewed her out and sent her to the principal's office because he though it was porn.

David got over it and has accepted his success and had toured since the 80's and has done Bway/Vegas shows. The guy has talent and Shaun is a writer/director and has wrirtten many TV series. He did one of the Amazon Pilot shows(Hysteria). It was actually good, but they didn't pick it up as a series.
