Yeah, this album sounds amazing. I listened to Teach Me a New Language about 20 times. So good.

I didn't see anything on his site about a download on 4/29. Is that confirmed? I preordered an autographed CD months and months ago, so I assume I'll get a download link. Any by assume, I mean PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send me a link.

Upon first listen, I'm only digging "Teach Me a New Language" and "The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets". The rest of the album just rings in at "ok" to me, but I'm willing to give it another listen. It's refreshing all around to hear something new, different and fun. music

It's sooo damn good! And once again, it sounds nothing like his previous albums. This dude just keeps bringing it, time and time again. "Emotional Criminal" was the first song that jumped at me (outside the singles). Now, Pedestal" is a song that is quickly growing on me. "Rub My Feet" (which I'm playing right now) is awesome! Hell, it's all great!

Were people who supported Van through Pledgemusic supposed to get bonus non-album tracks? I only have the album itself. Which, BTW, is bloody fucking fantastic.

Fuck no. It just re-emphasizes how much great music is out there recently. Van Hunt. D'Angelo. AOA (I still love it; I don't care what anyone says). Kendrick. So much excellent music!

I seriousy doubt it. Black Messiah is good, and so is Voodoo, but this board certainly overreacts
when it comes to D'Angelo, whose cock is nestled firmly in this board's collective mouth.

Anyways, The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets, after an initial listen, is a mostly subdued affair when
compared to the boisterousness of WWYHF? and his musical juggernaut, Popular. I like it so
far and appreciate its odd-ball qualities and oblique mannerisms.

But like most of Hunt's work, it'll take five or six spins before I start to really appreciate
what he's doing artistically.

This cd has yet to wow me. I kept looking for that homerun cut like
Hello Goodbye, If I Take You Home Upon, Hot Stage Lights, etc and I just haven't found it here but i will definitely give it a few more listens.

Only had a listen to the NY Times stream once, but on first impressions I thought this started really really well, but got too subdued towards the end. The latter half of the album was still good, but I would have liked a few more funky songs like the first half to change it up a bit, pretty much the last five songs are all mid or slow tempo and that kinda dulls my enthusiasm a bit. Still, it was only a first impression, and overall I liked it enough to buy it, there's a lot going on sonically at times so it probably needs a few spins to sink in.

The end is definitely slower. But the songs build tension and dynamics in really cool ways. It actually makes me think of the structure of many Radiohead albums.

I think it's intentional. The album of course is called "The Fun Rises, The Fun Sets". At the beginning of the first track you hear someone say "The Fun Rises...." The first 7 songs of the album are fairly upbeat and danceable. At the begging of the "Headroom" which is the 8th song and the exact midway point of the album. The voice comes back and says "The Fun Sets..." and in the 2nd half of the album the songs are much more mellow, as pointed out earlier in this thread.

This album has got lot of layers sonically, and probably lyrically too. It will take a few listen to get it all. And even then, it will probably be one of those albums that your finding new things years later. It's remarkabley layered for an album which is very much a minimalist funk and soul album.

Oh yeah, I'm sure it is, just on a subjective level I felt that maybe the second half lacked energy slightly, but that's only on a very cursory listen, I definitely intend to devote more time to it today and give it the attention it deserves.

Agreed.

You miss out on some intricacies in the arrangements without the aid of headphones.
