Jody Watley Owns 'Shalamar' Name

This came to me, as a subscriber to the 'Jody Watley' website; so the first-person used here is Watley's camp. It's interesting and might lead to some new music - but nothing compares to the "old" Shalamar

Jody Watley On The Acquisition of Shalamar Trademark Statement

I became the legal and registered trademark owner of SHALAMAR in May of 2014 after a thorough and lengthy process by the USPTO. The acquisition was prompted in part to gain control by the ongoing use and misuse of my likeness and the continued commerce generated from the foundation I helped to create decades ago. There are former members currently trying to confuse the public giving the impression there are two groups brazenly seeking to undermine my rights. My trademark attorneys are handling this matter.

Becoming owner allows me to revive the name for a new audience, to not get stuck in the safety net of nostalgia because I’m not interested in doing what I’ve already done. There’s new merchandise for fans to purchase, with plans for new music and other exciting projects in the pipeline. We have already begun building a social media presence beginning with a verified page on Facebook/ShalamarOfficial.

Joining me for the newly reloaded SHALAMAR are singer/dancer/choreographers Rosero McCoy (Usher, Beyoncé, America’s Next Best Dance Crew, Shake it Up, The Sing Off) and breakout young Ohio talent Nate Allen Smith. Our dynamic stage show to which we’ve already been playing to sold-out audiences in the United States and Japan, with other scheduled concerts in the UK and Brazil breathes new life into classics “A Night To Remember,” “Take That To The Bank,” and “The Second Time Around” in a set that includes signature Jody Watley solo hits like “Friends,” “Looking For a New Love,” and “Don’t You Want Me,” as well as music from Paradise. The album’s first single “Nightlife” was the 19th Billboard Top 20 Dance hit; a UK Top 10 Commercial Pop and UK Top 5 soul hit. This is a new era for SHALAMAR and Jody Watley, artist and entrepreneur. Visit the Official SHALAMAR website: http://www.shalamarofficial.com

Does she really believe that this "new" Shalamar is gonna make any kind of impact in this day and age? I have always liked Jody, but this is absurd.

I hate when groups/bands can't get along and they have two (or more) competing groups with the same name confused The same thing happened with Klymaxx,Mary Jane Girls,The Stylistics,War and numeorous others. Why can't these people understand that their fans want to see the original members reunited instead of groups with only one original member onstage with some random unknowns.

You not understanding this would not been an issue has the other two had not been False advertising with Jodys picture for years. Why could they have taken a new group picture with ole girl. NDea Davenport has the same issue with Brand New Heavies.

I would love to see a Shalamar show, but I refuse to spend my money on a fake version of it.This applies to other bands, too.I once saw Lonnie Jordan's version of WAR and I regret going to that show. For me,it's gotta be the real members or nothing at all.

I saw Jody featuring Shalamar Reloaded at BB Kings... It was a blast. The show is basically her journey from Shalamar to Grammy Winning Artist. Shes back in NYC this summer for additional gigs.

Good for her. For years, if not decades, Shalamar and its handlers used her name and image to promote the brand -- even after she was long out of the group -- and she probably wasn't compensated for much (or any) of it. Who knows how many compilation albums were released with music that featured her voice and concerts were played that featured her face on the fliers without her getting a dime. Obviously whoever held the name rights to the group let them expire and she was able to legally obtain it. I say good. She did nothing wrong and payback is a bitch. Let this be a lesson to groups and management who bully, belittle and badmouth certain members. Tables can and usually do turn.

Let's be realistic here, Jody. How many people are going to be interested in Shalamar without Howard Hewitt? He was the star of the group. This is just a vehicle to try to revive some interest in Jody's long-gone singing career.

Didn't she say she didn't want ANYTHING to do with Shalamar years ago? But it is unprecedented for her legacy to accomplish this. I wonder how Howard and Jeffery feels about it?

I'm reading some of the facebook posts about this and I'm amazed at the number of people getting so incredibly emotional about this and taking sides. There are definately so many people who still love Shalamar.

Yeah I just don't think Jody gets it. She was not the straw that stirred the drink
in Shalamar(it was clearly Howard)and her success as a solo act was brief as the Mary Jane Girls although more successful across the charts. I do like her latter day song Off The Hook. When fans think of Shalamar they identify with Howard's voice far more than Jody's. She can have the name but that still can't stop Howard and Jeffrey performing as Howard Hewitt's Shalamar. It's that simple. lol

It's so much bad blood between the original Shalamar members. They need to get Iyanla Vanzant involved and all sit down and patch this up. Do it for the memory of Don Cornelius. Who died miserable and alone. Life is too short for this. They had so much chemistry, even during the turbulent times.

I agree.Jody should just tour as a solo act, focus on her solo hits and throw in a few Shalamar classics.I don't see why she feels the need to "re-make" the group completely, especially when she says (in that press release) that she's not about nostalgia. As far as I'm concerned, there is only one Shalamar...the one with Howard,Jody and Jeffrey.Trying to do it all over again with other members won't work.

The original members were session singers, which was common for some disco and bubblegum bands. They weren't real groups. The only reason a group for Shalamar was formed is because Uptown Festival became a hit and someone was needed to do performances. At any rate, there were 2 other guys who were official members before Howard Hewitt joined.

I should have specified, the trio with Howard & Jeffery, the one everyone prefers. I already knew the WHOLE history of Shalamar. Even with that said, Jody is still considered an original member, along with her then abusive boyfriend Jeffrey. Although your right about the "studio" group..

Now that would make for a GREAT episode for Iyanla Fix My Life! thumbs up! Maybe you should send that suggestion in to OWN.

Seems to be a power play so she can control when Shalamar is used in conjunction with her success. Howard Hewitt was the star though.

If she REALLY doesn't want nostaligia, then she won't use the name and won't let them use it either!

SO TRUE but how many people are interested in Shalamar minus Ms. Wately? As I've said before, Watley still finds ways to fuck-over Howie & Jeff. stickpoke If Howard is Shalamar as you claim... the group would have had the same succes post Watley but that didn't really happen, did it? If Howie is Shalamar, than Mr. Hewitt could've pull anyone off the street or get some of those fill-ins that once were apart of Shalamar. These don't like one another.... from her side of things, it very understable and woman don't forget shit. Oh well... lol

This is a solution for Jody Watley fans who only became fans of Shalamar after the fact, since Jody's fanbase is greater than Howard's. But if we are truly considering solo success, then the group's fanbase is somewhere in between Jody solo and Howard solo.

As far as most fans are concerned, there is only ONE Shalamar....the one that consists of Howard Hewitt,Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniels.

Any other version (with different members) is not Shalamar.

If Howard,Jody and Jeffrey can't work things out and reunite, then all of them should just end Shalamar completely.Focus on their solo careers.

But at least Diana had actual Supremes, members from the 1970s. It was like if Jody got Delisa Davis & Micki Free to do a tour with.
