This guy's artistic journey has been a joy to witness and his sound is becoming more and more distinct with each release.
I cannot wait to get my vinyl. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Thanks, Gray!
I listened; it's hard to contextualize this outside of an album listen, which is my preferred way to experience an artist like Van Hunt, D'Angelo, Prince, other artists who craft records as artistic statements and aren't really singles' artists.
I always enjoy Hunt's production and his lyricism. This track features those things but I am concerned with its prosaicness. And after listening to the first single, "Vega," I am really con- cerned with this critique thus far. It doesn't sound otherworldly; it doesn't sound like a "new thing" which is what I've associated with Hunt since Popular.
I am still very excited for May 5th! |

Once I was this XXL fan of "FunHunt", then, with each new release, I lost a bit more of my unbridled fuss. VEGA and OLD HAT being no exceptions here, regrettably. This said, I dont expect too much of "The Fun Rises The Fun Sets". A couple or two of real good songs might be on here, but I am happy when surprised and Mr Popular proves me wrong.

I'm the same way with those artists and others as well. Because it's been a while between albums, I was anxious to hear the singles and really like what I've heard. "Vega" follows "Old Hat" in the track listing for the album, I think, and they mesh well. It's a really good sign for me.
Plus, IIRC, this is the first release with a simultaneous vinyl pressing, which is where his albums belong.

I'm feeling the first two tracks for sure. They sound right on par with Van's previous music. Which means it's awesome! Best Buy briefly had 30 second previews of all the tracks. (It's since been taken down). Obvisouly, it's very hard to judge anything from a 30 second clip. But it sounded great! |

One does flow into the other quite nicely with that old timey R&B feel.
I dunno; I just remember listening to "Turn Your TV On" and thinking "What the fuck is this?" and being blown away by the time "Ur Personal Army" reached its middle eight; you just don't hear music progressions like that in R&B anymore. These first two cuts are underwhelming to say the least. But, I'll wait to pass judgment on the album until it's released obviously.

Ahh....
....now that's the Van Hunt I'm expecting: the quirky arrangement; the sophisticated production; the urbane lyricism; the intelligent song construction (the progression from verse to chorus and the interesting bridge); and the inventiveness of it all hangs together so well.
Where "Old Hat" is kinda rote, "Teach Me A New Language" is the otherworldliness I'm expecting from this dude.

Amazing!
Right?
He's simply the most interesting musician in R&B today and I think he's gotta be in the conversation as one of the top pop songwriters too.
I think the reason why he's not more popular here or across the board is because he's hardly
polarizing as a personality. He pretty much stays out of the spot light.
Anyways, thank you Gray for bringing this new tune to my attention: it was really fantastic! |

I agree with that! I am very excited about the new album, but hearing these random tracks released doesn't get my blood pumping faster. They are all good songs, but don't make a big enough impact with out the rest of the album to round it out.
At this point, for me, Van is no longer an artist for singles (and I think that's why his last album didn't resonate well with the "when's he gonna play "Down Here in Hell" folks) . I see his albums as full stories, and think they are best listened to as so.

I may be biased, as I've probably seen him live about 8 times, but he is FANTASTIC! And his band is killer too. I am literally checking the net daily anticipating shome tour dates.
Here is a painfully embarassing thread from the second time I saw him (7 years ago) http://prince.org/msg/8/269485 If you will, so will I |

I'm probably one of his biggest fans. I think I've seen him 25-30 times. So yes, I think he's great live! He has a great band and they often put new and interesting arrangements on older songs. Which sometimes are even better then the original. He's also always cracking jokes in his concerts. He's dropped some pretty hilarious lines at his shows.
He's awesome with fans! He's been incrediblely generous to me. [Edited 4/14/15 18:22pm] |
