Carly Rae Jepson song All That. Another artist biting that Prince sound especially the bass. Its a pretty decent attempt. I guess the 80s revival isn't going anywhere soon.
It was crap! The first song was just a rewrite of Call Me Maybe which was God awful in itself, do we retread/salute our awful one hit wonders now?
.
The second song "I really really really really really like you" I was like oh come on are we running out of words? Maybe eliminate 4 reallys and put in something clever or creative? This was derivative nonsense and y'all compare it to Prince or RFTW but all I heard from the kitchen was a tired Bunny DeBarge impersonator tryin to squeak out the high notes. Painful.
.
Srsly whomever books musical guests for SNL should be thrilled they still have a job as they make some of the worst decisions ever.
.
Sidebar this weeks episode was one of the best in a long time... Michael Keaton nailed it.

The first song was not very good and i agree there are too many "really's" in it but i actually dug the second song. Especially coming from her it was cool and better than I expected. Michael Keaton was the bomb as the host. This guy is so talented and underrated. He should be doing more!
I was excited about this as I love a lot of Dev Hynes' own stuff (Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion) and related remixes and production credits. But this one ain't for me I don't think.

I really...
Because I get all feely...
And though it seems so silly...
I can't help that I really really really like you...
It is really weird that this sound is coming from Carly Rae since she is too young to be influenced by this (imho). Must be the producer. Who produced this?

Bruh, I know teenagers that hate all modern music and pretty much exclusively listen to Prince, MJ, and all 80's music. So I don't think CRJ is too young to be influenced by this stuff. That said, I do think this vibe came from the producer in this instance.

Blood Orange. Dev Hynes.
I find it pretty disappointing that people here are blasting this track. The track is stylistically a continuation of his solo album, but I suppose people just like to shit on everything that has a hit-making young female singer on it.
The song is obviously influenced by Prince ("International Lover", Electric Intercourse" etc.).

I like his joint with Solange and can see how it is a continuation of Blood Orange's work. I wasn't feeling it from Carly Rae because it didn't seem to be a continuation of HER work.

I wasn't really calling you out specifically for "shitting on it". I just got a bit frustrated because people are so quick to dismiss it instantly as "mediocre" or "formulaic pop" etc. because it's easy on the ears and the singer is Carly Rae Jepsen.
A lot of contemporary producers could learn a thing or two about how Dev Hynes handles space in his productions. I really like the way the vocals change registers between the verses and the chorus. Dev's own sound is all over the track.
