The Spaniels were a pioneering doowop vocal group from Gary, Indiana, and were probably the first successful R&B group to emerge from the USA's MidWestern states. They were also the first group to be signed by the new VeeJay label (they had already signed Jimmy Smith), and became the label's most successful vocal group as it established itself as probably the first independent African-American owned label of any significance. The group came together at Roosevelt High School in Gary, led by James 'Pookie' Hudson, and they were the first vocal group to use the technique of having a lead singer at one microphone with the other members at a second.

.

They scored in 1953 with their first release Baby It's You, which made the R&B Top 10 and in 1954 had their biggest hit with Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite which was an R&B No. 5 and crossed over to No. 24 in the pop charts. This great value 51-track 2-CD collection brings together all the tracks that they released during the first decade of their career, either as A & B sides of their singles or on their two LPs for VeeJay, and it is a great showcase for their distinctive vocal talents and high quality songwriting. It's welcome addition to Acrobat's already substantial catalogue of doowop offerings.

Rufus & Chaka Khan

BBR remaster of LIVE - STOMPIN' AT THE SAVOY (1983)

No Bonus Tracks, WB wouldnt clear

Very sad that Warner Brothers has decided to license BBR to reissue some of Chaka's Warner catalog. Since they are a U.K. label, it will be almost impossible for them to license any unreleased tracks (and there were a few from this album). I would normaly say, "what's the point of reissuing this without the full concert?", but I may purchase because the original CD issue of the album was so poorly mastered. Hopefully, one day, FTG or another American label will be able to license Khan's entire Warner catalog and release proper reissues with bonus tracks.

This would be considered a RUFUS reissue not a CK one... what ever blockage they have with the UMG material would be same on this WB live set, Everlasting Love live was on a soundtrack. which WB wont clear

Warner Brothers could have chosen to reissue "Stompin" themselves as a deluxe CD/DVD, with the complete concert on CD as well as a DVD of the concert, which was promised back in 1983, but, for whatever reason, they decided againt releasing it on video and it's been sitting in the vaults ever since.

Since soulmusic.com is based in the uk, they are limited in bonus material they are able to license. Im sure if ftg would have released it, we would have gotten more. But im just happy to finally see it make its debut on cd.

So Lonesome I Could Cry

Charlie Rich So Lonesome I Could Cry on CD & LP

Release: May 4, 2015
.
"The Hi recordings of Charlie Rich are in many ways the most reckless and adventurous of his career. In 1966 and 1967, Hi, a small Memphis label that hosted acts such as Willie Mitchell (and later Al Green) and the Bill Black Combo believed, like Sun, RCA, and Mercury before them, in Rich’s prodigious talent but had no idea where to put him categorically...Most are the songs associated with Hank Williams...They are revelatory in that they reveal just how wide-ranging Rich’s vision was.
.
"Beginning with Williams’ own “My Heart Would Know,” Rich takes the songs deep into his own musical soul and, like Ray Charles before him with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, makes them his own, turning them into timeless pop classics. Among Rich’s recordings, these 12 songs are some of the most enduring. There is "You Win Again," where the pedal steel becomes an instrument of timbral control and coloration and the lyric becomes a shimmying doo wop-framed melody; "Hey Good Lookin'" sounds as if Rich is backed by Booker T. & the MG's and the Meters simultaneously. The cool Hammond B3 run at the beginning of "Nobody's Lonesome for Me" takes a honky tonk tune and turns it inside out, making it a rousing party anthem.
.
"As for Williams "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," Rich's version is among the most beautiful and emotionally naked ever recorded. The set closes with Leon Payne's "They'll Never Take Her Love Away From Me." As pedal steel guitar winds out the sang lines, Rich pours virtually everything he has into Payne's deeply moving lyric. This isn't merely a sad song, it's a devastating one; it's a suicide note; but the tenderness evoked by Rich makes it among the most beautifully twisted love songs ever performed. This collection is essential for Rich fans, and something to consider for any fan of timeless, restless country-soul from the 1960s." - Fat Possum / Thom Jurek, All Music
.
Charlie Rich So Lonesome I Could Cry Track Listing:
1. My Heart Would Know
2. Take These Chains From My Heart
3. Half As Much
4. You Win Again
5. I Can't Help It
6. Hey Good Looking
7. Your Cheating Heart
8. Cold, Cold Heart
9. Nobody's Lonesome For Me
10. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
11. Wedding Bells
12. They'll Never Take Her Love From Me

The Painter is the eighth studio album by the funk and disco group KC And The Sunshine Band, which was produced by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch. The album was released in 1981 on the Epic label.

The Painter became KC And The Sunshine Bands’ pop-focused music album with the notable track, the ballad "All Through the Night." The song was co-written by Bruce Roberts and Donna Summer and was first recorded by Summer for her 1979 album Bad Girls.

There are some great cuts on the album such as the opener, "Stand Up," which would not have been out of place on an earlier Miami Sound Machine or Gloria Estefan album. The single, "Love Me," has one of the most saavy choruses and features a feel-good refrain.

Built around a soulful undercurrent of organ and the typically excellent brass flourishes the Sunshine Band is known for as well as being sung in Casey's trademark falsetto, "Love Me" could so very easily have brought them back into hit R&B territory.

As KC & the Sunshine Band signed to Epic during Michael Jackson’s legendary run with the label — The Painter was released as Jackson was preparing to record his landmark Thriller album.

Let’s enjoy The Painter… and don’t feel at all guilty if you feel the need to “Shake, Shake Shake Your Booty” while you listen…

I'm In Love Again is the sixth solo album released by American recording artist Patti LaBelle in late 1983. Notable for LaBelle's first solo Top Ten Hits, "If Only You Knew" and "Love, Need And Want You", it became LaBelle's first successful solo album after five previous releases and six years.

Most of LaBelle's 1982 recordings included live instrumentation and strings while 1983 recordings had producers experimenting with electronics, showcasing the lengthy year in recording.

LaBelle also experimented with jazz music, covering the standard, "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" A synthpop track, "I'll Never, Never Give Up", was one of the final songs recorded for the album, and which included funk and gospel elements plus a male backup vocal chorus.

Another song overdubbed from initial sessions of The Spirit's in It was "Love Bankrupt", which included strong country elements.

Going over material, the album's executive producers Gamble & Huff picked the mid-tempo, string-laden "If Only You Knew", as the "one with the most hit potential", issuing "I'll Never, Never Give Up" as its B-side to dance clubs.

The album launched two singles - "If Only You Knew" and "Love, Need And Want You". It's truly a soul classic, flawless, with silky moments on the album. If you want to hear how Soul should be done, simply get this album.

Rod Stewart An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down on 180g LP
Release: June 23, 2015
.
With his soulful and singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has paved one of the most iconic and successful musical careers of all time. From his time in the Jeff Beck Group to The Faces to his ever evolving solo career, the two time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been at music's pinnacle for more than five decades!
.
The majority of Stewart's solo debut was recorded during a white hot time of his blossoming career when he was still officially a member of the Jeff Beck Group and was on the brink of joining The Faces. It was issued in the U.S. at the end of 1969 under the title The Rod Stewart Album and in the U.K. in early-1970 as An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down.
.
The auspicious 8-track offering features all the signposts of a vital artist in the making. Successfully incorporating elements of folk, blues and rock & roll with aplomb, Rod tackles the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man," Mike D'Abo's "Handbags And Gladrags," Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town" and shows off his songwriting acumen to boot with the four outstanding originals "Blind Prayer," "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down," "I Wouldn't Ever Change a Thing" and "Cindy's Lament."
.

1. Street Fighting Man
2. Man of Constant Sorrow

5. An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Phil Collins / Face Value deluxe edition to be released in 2015

May 12, 2015 by Paul Sinclair

Phil Collins‘ 1981 album Face Value will be reissued this autumn as a deluxe edition, heralding the start of a new global catalog deal with Warner Music Group.

The new partnership will encompass newly remastered deluxe editions of all eight Phil Collins studio albums as well as other “uniquely curated titles from the vaults”.

It remains to be seen how ambitious the reissues will be and if we will see multi-disc super deluxe edition box sets or cheaper, more compact two or three disc sets. Collins’ 1993 album Both Sides will be released alongside Face Value in 2015.

This announcement echoes the Press Release from April last year where Warner Bros. Records excitedly informed the world about their ‘new agreement’ with Prince that would “see the release of long-awaited, previously unheard material”. We’re still waiting…

I think it’s fair to say that working with Mr Collins will be more straightforward than His Purpleness and so we look forward to seeing how these new reissues pan out. Leave a comment and let SDE know your preferred format/content when it comes to Phil Collins reissues.

This contains a previously unreleased recording, written and produced by Barry Manilow - "Never Gonna Let You Get Away" - recorded in 1979 but left off her debut Arista album "Dionne".

It also contains 3 songs left off her follow-up album "No Night So Long". These would also be previously unreleased, except that they were recently included on funkytowngroove's "No Night So Long" expanded edition CD.

And this CD, part of Sony Music's "The 80s" series, is available at a great price

Duran Duran‘s classic 1982 album Rio is being made available again this summer as a two-CD deluxe edition.

The 2009 double-disc reissue was packaged as a deluxe 60-page ‘casebound book’ with textured sleeve and featured a well-balanced selection of bonus tracks which included the US album mixes of five tracks, original demos, non-album singles and B-sides and the various 12-inch mixes of the era. The new version maintains the track listing but will dispense with the book-style packaging, instead making do with a digipack presentation.

It was noted by some at the time that it was rather crass to have the words ‘Limited Edition’ spoil the aesthetic of the front cover, but at least it does seem to have genuinely been limited since this set has been out-of-print for a while.

Rio will be reissued on 22 June 2015. A one-CD remaster will also be made available.

Talk about dull bonus tracks!!! A bunch of single versions. They should have left well enough alone.
