Sir Mix-A-Lot Mack Daddy on LP

Out of Print on Vinyl for Over 10 Years!
Release: April 13, 2015
.
Sir Mix-A-Lot parlayed a gonzo tribute to women with large derrieres into hip-hop immortality. But even before he struck crossover gold, Sir Mix-A-Lot was one of rap’s great D.I.Y. success stories. Coming from a city - Seattle - with barely any hip-hop scene to speak of, Mix-A-Lot co-founded his own record label, promoted his music himself, produced all his own tracks, and essentially pulled himself up by the proverbial American bootstraps.
.
An eclectic music fan but a rabid hip-hop devotee, he was already actively rapping in the early ’80s, and co-founded the Nastymix record label in 1983 with his DJ, Nasty Nes, who also hosted Seattle’s first hip-hop radio show. His first single was 1987’s “Posse on Broadway,” which referred to a street in Seattle, not New York; it became a local hit, and paved the way for his first LP, 1988’s Swass, which also featured the popular novelty “Square Dance Rap,” and a Run-D.M.C.-style cover of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” with backing by Seattle thrashers Metal Church. In 1989, Mix-A-Lot released his follow up album Seminar, which produced three charting singles in “Beepers,” “My Hooptie,” and “I Got Game” and became the rapper's second straight platinum album.
.
Financial disputes with Nastymix resulted in a fierce court battle and ended Mix-A-Lot’s association with the label. Fortunately, Def American head Rick Rubin stepped in to offer him a major-label contract. Mix-A-Lot had long had a knack for mimicking (and mocking) the pimps he’d watched while growing up in Seattle, and adopted their visual style with Rubin’s encouragement. He debuted for Def American with 1992’s Mack Daddy, whose first single, “One Time’s Got No Case,” was a critique of racial profiling by police. It went virtually unheard, but the follow-up, “Baby Got Back,” became a pop phenomenon from the moment MTV aired its provocative video.
“Baby Got Back” spent five weeks atop the pop charts, selling over two million copies; it also pushed Mack Daddy into the Top Ten, and went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Billboard magazine ranked it as the second biggest single of the year, behind only Boyz II Men’s juggernaut “End of the Road.” Continuing with its Respect The Classics campaign, UMe will be reissuing Mack Daddy back on vinyl after being out of print for over 10 years!
.
Sir Mix-A-Lot Mack Daddy Track Listing:
1. One Time's Got No Case
2. Mack Daddy
3. Baby Got Back
4. Swap Meet Louie
5. Seattle Ain't Bullshittin'
6. Lockjaw
7. The Boss Is Back
8. Testarossa
9. A Rapper's Reputation
10. Sprung On The Cat
11. The Jack Back
12. I'm Your New God
13. No Holds Barred

Genesis A Trick Of The Tail on 180g LP

Half Speed Mastered / Pressed at Pallas in Germany

Release: April 28, 2015
.
The Genesis reissue campaign soldiers on, this time with the band’s studio output during the half-decade between 1976 and 1981 which includes A Trick of the Tail (1976), Wind & Wuthering (1971), And Then There Were Three (1978), Duke (1980) and Abacab (1981). The 1976-1981 era was a transitional period for Genesis on a couple of different levels, but the music that emerged within those years helped take a prog-heavy gang of musicians and turn them into proper pop/rock heroes.
.
The idea of Phil Collins taking over for Peter Gabriel, Genesis’s original lead singer, was not one which had been planned from the beginning. Indeed, when Gabriel bid the band adieu, Collins, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Mike Rutherford held auditions for a new singer, and even as they were doing so, Collins would’ve been just fine if Genesis had carried on and played nothing but instrumentals. After almost bringing aboard a gentleman named Mick Stickland as their new singer, the band and Stickland ultimately opted against moving forward with their collaboration, predominantly due to the fact that the backing tracks for the band’s new album had already been recorded, and they weren’t in the best key for Stickland. After additional auditions proved unsuccessful, Collins opted to take a shot at singing “Squonk,” after which he found himself more or less drafted for the position.
.
Some have said that A Trick of the Tail feels like a spiritual sequel, at the very least, to Selling England by the Pound, but whether that’s because the band wished to return to that sound in the wake of Gabriel’s departure or that it’s simply the way their creative juices were flowing, it’s hard to say. Whatever the case, even setting aside how successful Collins’ time with Genesis ultimately proved to be, what was most important at the time A Trick of the Tail was released was the fact that it cemented Genesis as a viable commercial entity without Gabriel. Not only did it hit #3 on the UK Albums chart and #31 on the Billboard Top 200, but its sales were double those of its predecessor.
.
Genesis A Trick Of The Tail Track Listing:
1. Dancer On A Volcano
2. Entangled
3. Squonk
4. Mad Man Moon
5. Robbery, Assault And Battery
6. Ripples...
7. A Trick Of The Tail
8. Los Endos

I wanted to comment on the last thread about the latest round of Universal reissues. How lazy can they possibly be reissuing a bunch of titles that are already out there readily available? Universal still has a ton of titles that have either never been released on CD or have been out of print for decades!

The Staple Singers' Freedom Highway Complete - Available Starting March 3, 2015

Legacy Recordings Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Montgomery-Selma Civil Rights Marches with Release of The Staple Singers' Freedom Highway Complete - Recorded Live at Chicago's New Nazareth Church, A Newly Expanded Edition of Legendary Concert Recorded April 9, 1965

Historic Soul/Gospel Concert Masterpiece Available on CD, Online and 2LP Configurations on Tuesday, March 3, 2015

Staple Singers march back into spotlight

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Freedom Highway Complete - Recorded Live at Chicago's New Nazareth Church (http://smarturl.it/Amazon_SSFHC), a newly remixed, remastered and expanded edition of the live concert masterpiece recorded by the Staple Singers in April 1965 in support and celebration of that year's historic civil rights marches from Montgomery to Selma, Alabama.

Freedom Highway Complete will be available as a single CD, as a digital release online, and in a special 2LP configuration on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.

Legacy's Freedom Highway Complete is a state-of-the-art sonic vérité capturing that transcendent Chicago gospel service from 50 years ago. Featuring previously unreleased performances, the spiritually uplifting service, "Pops" Staples' Intro and Outro and more, Freedom Highway Complete puts the listener right in the church, with the Staple Singers, the choir, the band, and the congregation for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

An essential musical, cultural and historic document, Freedom Highway Complete presents the full concert and service in natural ambient sound, remixed and remastered from the original analog multi-track tapes.

First released on Epic Records as an LP in 1965, the original Freedom Highway album, constrained by the time limits of 12" vinyl, edited the New Nazareth Church concert and service down to key performance tracks. Newly expanded to include 30+ additional minutes of the original church service, Freedom Highway Complete edition marks the first-ever release of the full concert and service.

In March 1965, the American Civil Rights Movement galvanized around three historic voter's rights marches along the 54-mile highway from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, the state capital, public acts of protest which served as catalysts to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The first march (March 7, 1965) was dubbed "Bloody Sunday" after 600 marchers faced the billy clubs and tear gas of local and state police forces; the second (March 9) reached a standoff between police and protestors, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; on the third march (March 21), protestors were protected by 2,000 US Army troops, 1,900 members of the Alabama National Guard and numerous FBI agents and federal marshals. The route taken by the 1965 Civil Rights marchers has been named the "Selma To Montgomery Voting Rights Trail" and is a US National Historic Trail.

Among those inspired by the message and activism of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Selma to Montgomery marchers were Chicago preacher/singer/guitarist Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his children, Pervis, Cleotha, Yvonne and Mavis. As The Staple Singers, the family group had been recording folk-infused gospel since the 1950s, and, by 1965, had been signed to Epic Records by Billy Sherrill (the songwriter/producer who would bring George Jones and Tammy Wynette to the label).

On April 9, 1965, The Staple Singers returned to their local parish, New Nazareth Church in Chicago, to participate in a service inspired by the Alabama marches. In a spirit-filled set that runs from Civil Rights anthems ("We Shall Overcome") to traditional gospel ("When The Saints Go Marching In"), The Staple Singers introduced their own original material, including the just-composed "Freedom Highway," inspired by the Selma to Montgomery marches.

Throughout the set, "Pops" Staples showcases the six-string guitar skills that transformed, and united the worlds of gospel, R&B, soul, rock and blues music. An archetypal electric guitar master, his influence can be heard in the sounds of Curtis Mayfield, Steve Cropper, John Fogerty, Michael Bloomfield and many others.

A pivotal event for the Staple Singers, the Freedom Highway Complete performance is described, by Mavis Staples, in Greg Kot's acclaimed 2014 book, I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, The Staple Singers and the March Up Freedom's Highway (Scribner's) as one of the most important moments of her career.

In the Staple Singers Essential Discography included in I'll Take You There: Mavis Staples, The Staple Singers and the March Up Freedom's Highway, author Greg Kot singles out the original 1965 release of Freedom Highway, writing, "The Staples mix gospel fervor with fierce protest music on their home turf, a concert at New Nazareth Church on Chicago's South Side. One of the best live albums ever made (though sadly out of print)."

On page 106 of his book, Kot writes, "In the New Nazareth Church concert, Pops connects the themes of gospel music and the civil rights movement more explicitly than ever before. It presents him not just as a musical innovator, but as a philosopher, preacher, and visionary, a melding of black church music and black popular music for a common cause. Church music was no longer just about making it through this world to get to the next one; it was also about living right now in the streets all African Americans shared.”

Five decades after Selma-Montgomery Freedom Marches and this jubilant celebratory concert, Freedom Highway Complete takes on a new social and cultural relevance and urgency in light of current events. Produced by Nedra Olds-Neal and Steve Berkowitz, this newly expanded edition features additional material cut from the original release, all newly mixed by Steve Addabbo and mastered by Mark Wilder. The new Freedom Highway Complete is a crucial document of this remarkable and important time in American history.

About The Staple Singers

The Staple Singers story begins in Winona, Mississippi, with the birth of Roebuck "Pops" Staples on December 28, 1914. A contemporary and protégé of mythic rural blues guitarist Charley Patton, "Pops" Staples developed his own repertoire of six string skills, playing at local dances, picnics and church services. In 1931, he became a member of the Golden Trumpets, singing and playing guitar with the Mississippi gospel jubilee quartet. Part of the great migration of black Americans who moved north for better paying factory jobs, Pops relocated to Chicago in 1936, playing gospel music with the Windy City's Trumpet Jubilees. In the mid 1950s, he presented his daughters, Cleotha and Mavis, and his son, Pervis, to a church audience. From that time on, The Staple Singers have been a powerful force in American gospel, soul and popular music.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, The Staple Singers won the 1992 Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award and took home a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Vibe On is happy to announce our first release to come in the spring of 2015: a two-disc deluxe edition of La Toya Jackson’s “Bad Girl.”

Originally released as a twelve-track album in 1990 via Sherman Records, Vibe On's deluxe edition of "Bad Girl" includes a whopping TWENTY bonus tracks, consisting of highly sought-after remixes and previously-unreleased tracks.

Largely recorded in Germany in the summer of 1989, Jackson's label was aiming to refresh her musical output by pairing her with producer Tony Monn. Monn had European disco-pop roots, working previously with Judy Cheeks and Amanda Lear and, with "Bad Girl," was able to help Jackson grow in the pop direction with which she was most comfortable.

Fans of La Toya -- affectionately referred to by Jackson as her "Toy Soldiers" -- often quote material from "Bad Girl" as being among their favorite. Sitting alongside an ode to Jackson's brother, Michael, "He's My Brother," the dance number "Do The Salsa" sees La Toya's first foray into the Latin-pop sound she returned to with her major comeback album "Startin' Over" in 2003 and again in 2014 with "Dimelo." Another Jackson classic, "Playboy," was performed at many of her early 1990s shows, including Bob Hope's USO tour.

Vibe On's deluxe edition of "Bad Girl" includes all released mixes of the singles "Bad Girl" and "Sexual Feeling," in addition to previously-unreleased versions of "Playboy," "You and Me" and "He's My Brother." The 1991 BCM Records single "Why Don't You Want My Love?" also makes an appearance, in both its original incarnation and several remixes.

The first fifty pre-orders directly from Vibe On will receive a FREE promotional 2-track CD single! For more information, or to pre-order "Bad Girl," visit www.vibeonrecords.com.

For more information, or to pre-order "Bad Girl," visit www.vibeonrecords.com.

lol lol lol People are willing to pay $500 for the ultra-rare "My Special Love" CD on ebay but "Bad Girl" is the album that gets a reissue? lol lol lol

Tommy Bolin Teaser on Limited Edition 3LP + 2CD Box Set

Release: May 19, 2015

UDR Records will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tommy Bolin’s classic solo album Teaser with a deluxe triple-vinyl set titled The Definitive Teaser Vinyl Edition Box Set. Labelle Nightbirds

Release: April 21, 2015

.

Includes Multichannel Mix in SACD Surround Sound and Original 2-Channel Stereo Mixes in SACD Stereo & CD Stereo

This is the album that taught the world how to seduce in French! After a decade of dues-paying hard work performing as Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, LaBelle found international fame in 1974 with Nightbirds. The suave 10-track effort found the trio at their absolute creative peak and it became the group's most successful record, busting into the Top 10 on the strength of the No. 1 hit "Lady Marmalade." Consisting of the brilliant three voices of Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx, LaBelle were hailed for augmenting their R&B/pop sound with elements of rock and funk and the success of Nightbirds helped to pioneer the disco movement and influenced dance music for decades. In 2003 the album was also listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 greatest albums of all time.

David Nathan's Soul Music? I just checked that site yesterday. Neither Stephanie or Valerie Simpson were mentioned as upcoming releases. I was wondering what was going on over there because for a minute there, it seemed as if Soul Music was getting licenses for several Universal titles but then their releases slowed down considerably.
