It Was THAT Bad? This Mary Jane Girl Was Relieved When Rick James Died

This is a pretty sad state of affairs:

It Was THAT Bad? This Mary Jane Girl Was Relieved When Rick James Died

mary jane girls blog picRick James with the Mary Jane Girls

We all remember when the late, great Rick James released his girl group, Mary Jane Girls, and they were dominating the music game with hits like “In My House,” “All Night Long,” and “Candy Man.”

Well over the past 3 decades after their release, a few of them have been very vocal about their tarnished relationship with Rick. One of the members, Maxi B. has recently put it ALL out there and what she said about how she felt when Rick passed away is shocking. Before we go any further, we want to point out that what she is referring to has also been confirmed by Rick himself, in his autobiography and overall it’s just really sad that the relationship turned that sour on both sides of the coin.

Maxi B. of the Mary Jane GirlsMaxi B. of the Mary Jane Girls

Check out why she was relieved when Rick passed away below:

Maxi B.: He (Rick) mishandled all of our (The Mary Jane Girls) careers. He blocked us all from having prosperity in the industry. People often ask me, you know, why didn’t any of you do anything? The reason is Rick James….he held us back….he signed us to a 20 year slave contract.
Maxi: “He just didn’t let us step out of our box like Vanity and Appolonia (Prince’s artists)…all of those girls got to step out and brand and now they can do things and it still hurts us because people are looking at us and realizing that we haven’t done anything in over 30 years. So when Rick died…it’s when I decided okay ‘That demon is off of my back. Ding dong the Wicked Witch is dead. Now I can go on and pursue…[it’s] never too late. I’m older now, but I’ll just go on and do it in another demographic.I believe that if you had talent then, you have talent now.’ And now I’m doing things that I never got to do thanks to the internet.

Maxi also said that Rick was doing everything he could to make sure they didn’t succeed and that she was crushed after Rick allegedly put out the word in the industry that no one can do business with any of the girls because they were in a 20 year contract with him and that he no longer wanted to make money off of them. She also said she was extremely hurt when she read Rick’s book and saw that he said he wanted to “break the Mary Jane Girls” so that they couldn’t make money. Wow!

Yeah Vanity got to do "The Last Dragon" among other things.

Appolonia was in "Falcon Crest and that sci-fi series with the guy with the long ponytail.

So they got to do things The MJG never got to do. And I'm surprised because Prince was pretty controlling himself but he wasn't THAT hateful.

Actually, Vanity did a LOT of shit, so did Apples. Back in the day, if you were a Prince protege, you could write your own ticket. You were MADE. Shit, look at Sheena Easton being on Miami Vice and the Bangles would not have had their career without P. The amount of people he made famous or who owe their career to him directly or indirectly is staggering.

Sheena Easton

She was popular before she got with Prince. If she was unknown she wouldn't have been asked to do a James Bond theme song. razz

Don't mean to segue too much but this sh!t happens way too often.

Just recently dance music ego trip Calvin Harris nixed a Teens Choice appearance by ex-girlfriend Rita Ora at the last munite.

He's like I-own-the-song-so-I-ain't-giving-you-the-right-to-perform. I thought this was extreme. I know I wasn't privy to their break-up, but as an artist he knew how important this could've been for Ora. It's her record. She sings it and depending on who you ask she even wrote some of it. I guess I'm just not THAT vindictive. You'd have to intentionally kill someone I know for me to take it there.

Prince put Sheena Easton on with the R&B audience. Before that R&B fans

either didn't know who she was or cared. I even had a college mate who lived on the floor in my dorm state that Sheena Easton used to be a good girl before Prince freaked her out. lol

In the mid-80s,Rick was feuding with Motown and unfortunately, the Mary Jand Girls got caught in the middle of it.

Sheena Easton had a Huge international hit song the same year Prince's 'hitless' Dirty Mind came out!

This 'Mega' hit had nothing to do with Prince and it was on the same 1986 album as Manic Monday.

Sheena Easton was huge before Prince. He just took her outside of that adult contempary pop that she was known for. She was made before Sugar Walls.

Prince simply gave away songs for The Bangles and Sheena Easton. It lead to some further collaborations, but they did not work under a contract for Prince and his record company like the Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6 projects did.

You really shouldn't lump them all together just because they were all women he worked with. lol

They way Rick downed JoJo McDuffie in that book is unreal. He called her a stupid ho, a dumb bitch and said that she was the ugliest of the Mary Jane Girls.

He also outed Teena Marie as being lesbian or bisexual. From the way it's written, you could tell Teena was troubled and struggling with her sexuality and thought that Rick was somebody she could trust and confide in. I'm sure she had no idea at the time, that 20 or so years later Rick would put it all out there in a book. She also talked about how Rick was funny with the money.

Jill has stated Prince was the same way (but to a much lesser degree..definitely not 20 years)

But then again, his other associates haven't said anything like that. Besides acts like Sheena Easton and The Bangles, P pretty much created everybody else

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

Jill Jones, though, was kind of screwed. At the point she was working with Prince, she was the least known of his proteges.
