BBC Radio 1 Blacklists Madonna Because “She’s Too Old”

Being the most successful female recording artist of all time may have its perks, but this week has seen Madonna learn that immortality isn’t one of them.

For, according to reports published today, she has seen her brand new single ‘Living For Love‘ booted fromBBC Radio 1‘s playlist…because she’s too old.

The number is pulled from the singer’s latest studio album ‘Rebel Heart‘ and was performed live at the 57th annual Grammy awards, recently named as one of the night’s highest pulling performances on a ratings front.
Alas, reports now claim that BBC Radio 1 aren’t interested in giving the jam airplay because Madonna is too old for its teen audience.

The Daily Mail reports:

The track is the first single from the mother of four’s new album, Rebel Heart. The station last night said the single had been omitted from playlists on the basis of ‘audience relevance’ and ‘musical merit’.A Radio 1 insider said: ‘At the end of the day it’s all about relevance. It’s natural that as an artist gets older their audience goes elsewhere and Radio 1 has to reflect that.

‘The station has a duty to meet the needs of younger listeners. I don’t think the audience is losing sleep that it is not playing Madonna in the same way that it used to.’
The snub represents a remarkable fall from grace for the star who notched up 13 UK No 1s between 1985 and 2008. She finds herself alongside Sir Cliff Richard, Take That, Kate Bush and Robbie Williams on a long list of artists who struggle to get new material played on the station.
Madonna’s single is being played on Radio 2, which caters for an audience aged over 35. By contrast, Sir Paul McCartney’s new single will be played by Radio 1 even though the former Beatle is 72. This is because the track is a collaboration with rapper Kanye West, 37, and pop mega-star Rihanna, 26.
A Radio 1 spokesman said: ‘Tracks are chosen on musical merit, and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.’

Backs up what I have been saying on this board for years. Radio stations decide what artist will get played on their stations based on the demographic they are trying to reach.

Maddonna could have put out the best recording of her carreer but she is in her late 50s and this was bound to happen. It is no reflection on the artist or the music.

I would love to see people like Maddonna and Prince spend more time writting, producing or doing somethings behind the scences.

Well, my teenage daughter liked it...so let's not legitimize the "because she's too old for teen listeners" nonsense...there is politics involved.

I don't think the song is too great.

Why should everything she releases get automatic radio airplay just because it's Madonna?

'Give me all your lovin' was such a poor, juvenile track that deserved zero airplay - which is what it got.

That's not really the issue that is being addressed.

Didn't say; "BBC ignores mediocre Madonna track", it says; "BBC blacklists Madonna because she's too old".

Pay attention young' un!!!

It happens to everyone. Everyone. But female artists are hit harder. It will happen to today's female stars as well.

This story was already fake when the poster posted it on here.

LOS ANGELES — In response to Madonna's tweet about BBC Radio 1 allegedly banning her new "Living for Love" single because of her age (56), a spokesperson at the radio station on Thursday told Mashable that they "do not ever ban artists."

"The tracks are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40 percent of the country's 15- to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist's age is never a factor," the spokesperson elaborated.

BBC Radio 1 also referenced Paul McCartney, who is on the station's rotation at the age of 72 as a guest artist on Rihanna's "FourFiveSeconds" and Kanye West's "Only One."

That's nice, but the key phrase is "relevance to our young audience." That rings true to Madge's core complaint - that age is a factor in her ability to get her music played. But female artists that came before Madonna probably had the same frustrations in the 80's and 90's. And the artists before them.

LOL as if they would say: "Yes, we took Madonna off the air because she is too old.". Get real.

As for musical merit, I doubt that the song is too bad to get played on the radio. I actually quite liked it when I heard it on the Grammy's.

Now seriously, Madonna should feel bless that she wasn't a victim of agism within the industry at age 40.

Madonna Makes Music Chart History As New Song Explodes At Pop Radio

Even at 56, Madonna is still breaking records. Her latest single “Living for Love” has topped Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart, making it her 44th No. 1 song on the Dance charts. Billboard describes the Queen of Pop‘s latest achievement.

“The Queen of Pop reigns again with ‘Living for Love,’ tying with George Strait, the King of Country, for the most leaders on a single Billboard chart. Madonna makes Billboard chart history, as she earns her 44th No. 1 on Dance Club Songs, where ‘Living for Love’ lifts 2-1.”

There is more good news for the former material girl. Her single “Living for Love” is finally exploding at pop radio. It is currently No. 37 and is gaining more than a million listener impressions a day. Many thought that Madonna’s new single was gaining airplay because of a radio pay deal, but it has been confirmed that radio stations are playing it out of their own will — that means Ms. Ciccone is getting a lot of requests and great call-out research.

Madonna has yet to debut on the Billboard Hot 100, but that should change now that “Living for Love” is getting a lot of exposure. The success of “Living for Love” will help Madonna’s next single “Ghosttown,” which probably won’t have to be released for a long time now that “Living for Love” is here for the long term. The folks at American radio obviously still care about the Queen of Pop. However, there have been rumors that theBBC’sRadio 1 has banned Madonna from their playlist because she is “too old.” The Inquisitr spoke to Radio 1, who denied the claims.

“First of all, there is no ban on Madonna. Her single ‘Living for Love’ might have been available since December, but the record company didn’t start pushing it until recently. We have played the song — I think more than once. It may not be played a lot on Radio 1 right now and may not be played at all in the future. But to say the song was ‘banned’ is an incredible lie and one that some are pushing to promote an obvious agenda against Madonna.”

Perhaps Radio 1 will see how successful Madonna has been in the United States with her new single and add it to their playlist. Madonna is scheduled to perform at the Brit Awardsnext week. Madonna will release Rebel Heart on March 10. Around that time, dates for her upcoming tour should be announced as well. The year 2015 is going to be a great year for Madonna fans.

She's got a 360° deal with Live Nation. Obviously she's gonna tour again. And that certainly won't be her last.

I think, if I remember right, she signed a three album deal and that included touring.
