Lady Gaga Has An Opinion On Singers Who Don't Write Their Own Music

How could you not love the effortlessly talented popstar, Lady Gaga. The singer does and says whatever she wants and is highly respected for it.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Lady Gaga has an opinion on singers who don’t pen their own lyrics. The star even goes as far as questioning why they continue to pursue their careers. Gaga, who has released four albums and a fifth set to release in a few months, reveals she writes 90 percent of her music before ranting about those that don’t.

“If you’re not gonna write your own music you better be able to blow. Because if you can’t blow, there’s no reason to do the job. But then you think about artists that can’t really sing, that have songs written for them, and it’s like, well why are they artists? Why are companies paying money to promote them? Because they’re beautiful and look good on camera and are kinda-sorta singing along? It’s like karaoke for pretty girls. When you’re a singer-songwriter it doesn’t really matter if you’re beautiful. What matters is that you create a relationship with your fans, and they care what you have to say.”

Despite the pretentious way she said that, she's kinda right and has a point.

Gaga is way misunderstood amongst the public. She's a great artist who just thinks of some stuff differently than others, it could look trashy and pretentious rather than artistic and authentic, but this girl has lived through many up and downs in her career that made her earn a better perspective on things. A conversation with Gaga isn't like a conversation with Katy Perry or Rihanna. She's unique, and in a good way IMO.

I agree with her.I think every recording artist should write lyrics. They don't have to write every song they sing, but they should write some of it.Songwriting gives them an opportunity to truly express themselves in their music. Why be an artist if you're not willing to do that?

How does that work for an opera singer? Since they tend to record & perform songs written hundreds of years ago. razz Tony Bennett doesn't write songs either. An instrumental act wouldn't have any need to write lyrics.

I agree with Gags', but then I think of the Brill Building days when there was this stable of great songwriters like Carole King churning out songs for the groups and that was the point.

She actually has a good point. I mentioned that i like rougher sounding voices. But those artists with not no great voices. Are usually incredible writers! or at least write and produce their shit, If you can't sing for shit... and don't write your own shit. What's the point? lol

That's why i don't get artists like Jason Derulo He can't sing to save his tap dancing life. And he has to ave people help him write his shit. He's even out tune with auto tune! jeebus. What is he good for? dancing? lol

one of the most ridiculous things i've ever heard. so according to her logic motown wouldnt have existed, those great artists didnt write any of their classic timeless songs.

She has a point to about those who both dont write and can't sing, but I wouldn't criticise those who can sing and perform well on stage but can't write.. they still have a place in the industry. Marc Anthony for example never writes his own music, but he has one of the best male voices in any genre anywhere and he's a great performer on stage.

Change it one more time..

Really? Take a look at the songwriting credits in her albums; she has a team of songwriters for almost every song, just like all the rest of the pop tarts. She think's she's different than all the other but who is she kidding? Her fans (monsters) are dropping like flies.

Well as much as ya'll may dig what she said, you also have to realize that most of MOTOWN was never written by the artist, almost all of Whitney Houston's songs were written by others, people like Johnny Mathis Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett (whom GAGA) has an album ever wrote lyrics. Also how does she feel about just writing all the music, is that no VALUE to her, I mean she worships Elton John but he has never written lyrics cause as he said he writes terrible shit, but all music is his, So when I hear or you hear a song by ELTON are you thinking of what "Bernie Taupin" is feeling? I mean come on now, I get her point, and I would feel it applied, but do we cherrypick whom it applies to?

But what about Elvis? Remember, he never wrote any of his own songs, let alone any of his greatest hits. hmmm

When Toni Braxton went bankrupt the first time, my first thought was 'she really should have contributed to the songwriting on her album' so that she would be collecting royalties. Why allow others to do all the writing and make all the money? Be a part of it, too.

That's just it. She wasn't targetting artists who don't write their music but the ones who neither do that or have a good singing voice.

There are quite a few songwriters that don't write their lyrics. Elton John would be one. There are also quite a few rock bands and electronic pop music acts where one guy does basically all the music and some other members write the lyrics. It can be about sharing the workload too.

I agree with the second part of your post though. Why be an artist if you're really not, you know, an artist? lol

I was never a Lady Gaga fan (not in a bad way just never listened)
But I've heard and seen her with Tony Bennett and I think a whole lot of people care

what she thinks. Tony Bennett had some great things to say about her.
I think his influence and work with her will influence her direction.
I hope those two continue to work together

Yep.. this is why you should always be in on your own songwriting, at least in part if you can't do it all: http://www.businessinside...sa-2014-12

Writing songs is no guarantee of getting paid. The Wilson brothers wrote songs in The Gap Band, but Charlie said Lonnie Simmons (who ran their label Total Experience) took all the royalties and most of their touring money too. For non performing songwriters, some are "work for hire", which is they get a fee for each song they write, but the songs belong to someone else like a record label and they get no royalties. HDH sued Motown because they said they were not getting paid what they should and then left. James Brown has said that King Records would tell him his singles sold less than they did, so they wouldn't have to pay as much royalties. Many acts found out that they signed away their publishing to the label or their manager as they didn't understand or fully read their contracts. That's how The Beatles lost their songs to Lew Grade and Little Richard also lost his songs in this way. J. Prince who ran Rap-A-Lot would not pay or underpay his acts and has been known to have them beat up if asked. Sylvia Robinson (Sugarhill Records) would also avoid paying her acts and the house band too.
