Tina Turner (Buddhism)

Many rappers have converted to Nation of Islam or the Five-Percent Nation. Q-Tip, Rakim, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Black Thought, ETC.

Oh and Madonna with Kaballah. I don't even know if she still practices that.

Mike Nesmith was Christian Scientist during the 1960s. I don't guess he's still in it since he had an eye operation a few years ago

Van Morrison. After being one of the most succesful singer/songwriters of the late 60s and most of the 70s Van went deep into exploring his spirituality and faith throughout the majority of the 80s. So much so that he lost a great deal of his fame and following as both fans and critics found a lot of the lyrical themes hard to swallow. Although he's moved away from that content to varying degrees since, he never really left it behind. Rather, he found a way to combine the secular with the spiritual in a way that isn't jarringly contradictory or uncomfortable. I think it's fair to say that Hymns To The Silence, released in 1991, is considered a high point of his career (one of many), if not an outright classic.

I was always a huge fan of Donna, in many ways she was like the female version of Prince. Love To Love You, Baby was banned in many places because of the 23 seconds of fake orgasms, and on stage Donna did to microphone stands what Prince did. She was the First Lady of Lust. Then she became a Born Again Christian in 1980 (including I Believe In Jesus on The Wanderer), and the raunchiness left her music just like it left Prince's.

You forgot to mention Carlos Santana´s "Divadip Santana" phase where he cut his hair short and wore all white suits.

And her music was still good so the lack of raunchiness didn't hurt anything. I could've sworn she was always Christian though, unless she just rededicated in 1980.

Oh I agree her music was still good without the raunch, but her success and mainstream popularity also went down without the raunch.

You are correct about her always being Christian, her musical roots were in gospel just like Whitney Houston. However Donna didn't become religious until she became Born Again in 1980.

This quote from Donna best explains it IMO: "Well, I was Christian my whole life, but I didn't really execute it -- I didn't live it."

I'm assuming you're refering to Dylan's conversion to Christianity at the end of the '70s? Incidentally, he returned to Judaism long ago.

Yes, a Zen Buddhist monastery. He now describes himself as a "pseudo-Buddhist". He never left Judaism, though.

That's pretty sad, actually. She was still doing good post-1980 but yeah, it's a shame that being Christian caused her decline.

Yes it was his conversion to Christianity I had in mind. I didn't specify any of the religions in the OP because I didn't want to risk having the thread moved to P&R. lol
