What makes someone overrated?

I hear that word tossed around a lot to describe artist. Specifically, when talking about Top 40 people. But make them overrated? Promotion, talent, etc.?

Answers will be subjective.

For me, overrating suggests the conferring of excessive accolades or rank relative to the recipient's actual output.

er

"Overrated" simply means: "I don't understand why everybody likes this artist", while "underrated" means:"Why doesn't everybody else like this artist?"

Yeah, pretty much. Overrated is "I'm tired of hearing (or hearing about) this person who I don't like (or don't like that much)." That's all it is.

It's obviously subjective but what makes an artist overrated is when said artist is being heralded, awarded, cited, and promoted more than they deserve to be.

The opnions of those that believe that description to be truthful. *shrug* If I like something, I like in and I don't care what anybody else thinks. Don't believe it guilty pleasures, don't believe it the term "Stan", don't believe in judging other's personal taste. There's enough to go around, generally speaking. lol

overrated= this person is the greatest, best, better than, more important than, you have no taste if you dont love them, you are blind and deaf if you cant see/hear how great they are, nobody will ever touch them, lets give them awards, lets make lists so we can put them at the top, ect, ect, ect

underrated=lets overlook everything this person has done, this person has done some pretty good stuff but we still not gonna actually say they are good, well they made a good project but it was all the other people they work with who made it good, this person is ok but so and so is better, this person shouldnt get awards because well they just shouldnt, theres something i dont like about this person so im not gonna give them any props.

They're widely successful, and I don't like it, so to cope with being in a seeming minority, I'm gonna call them "overrated" and pretend that I know better than the seemingly majority, hoping that I can coax others into turning on this act so that I won't be on the side that's outnumbered.

Word. A lot of what everybody said I agree with. I guess I asked the question because the word is tossed around so often and sometimes the reasons seem interesting. I guess I'll use Beyonce as an example. When I hear people say she's overrated it's ususally because she promotes herself a lot and that basically she's a product. Or simply because she's popular. But MJ and Madonna promoted themselves often but I don't often here the word overrated to describe them (especially not Michael). Idk I just think it's interesting. People definitely have different opinions (sometimes say them as if they're fact)and that's what that ultimately is.

i think with beyonce there is some solid proof of her being overrated, at least when it comes to her actual success. for instance she is called the 'king' (smh), the greatest artist of the millinium(we were just like 12 years into the new millinium),the biggest, most successful, blah blah. but her actual accomplishments dont tell the same story, there have been so many female artists of beyonce's era to achieve equal and greater success.there are some artists who are more hype driven and we all know perception is often greater than reality. i dont know if i will call madonna overrated because i've never heard a collective group of people say she is great at anything besides marketing herself, which is true. also i dont think an artist fans should be accused of overrating, they are fans its kinda there jobs to think their artists are the best. its basically the media thats guilty of the over and under rating imo.

I think I'm going to have to change my mind. I just read that Ringo Starr will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But of course he was already in there with The Beatles. So being in the Hall twice... Yeah, that makes someone overrated!

Psy was just a fad, he was popular for one song that swept the world for some months and was quickly forgotten about. You had a few people that tried to ride his wave but he was never praised as some groundbreaking, revolutionary artist who changed the music landscape, he was a trend and looked at as such. Once Gangnam Style extinguished, so did Psy and his popularity.

Anyone who is widely liked, but I don't like, is overrated. Anybody I like who is not as popular as other things I don't like, is underrated. I think that's how it works.

I don't know how to rate other peoples' opinions about music though, so I try not to worry about it too much.

EG, is Captain Beefheart underrated? I love his stuff but I also understand other people find it difficult and off-putting so I don't expect them to "rate" it well. As it stands, he is well known and respected among people who are interested in "out" music so I tend to think of him as PROPERLY RATED.
