Is there really any way this project can live up to 14 years of hype?

It already has--and I haven't even heard the darn thing yet! razz

I honestly hope so.

I'll go on the record as saying I think D'Angelo is overrated. That said, I'm genuinely wanting to be bowled over by this latest project. The first single? Eh... it's likeable; certainly refreshing for its festive Sly feel. But I'm hoping other material approaches -- or surpasses -- the sheer groove of, say, "1000 Deaths."

I´m having a huge "TOLD YOU SO ! " moment right now, and I am very happy that he is about to release a new album. I don´t care how long it took, 10 years, 12 years, 15 years, who cares? I don´t. I listen to his music so often, he cheers me up and makes me feel good, matter of fact I´ve been listening to his music all day today, and if he´s got a very unique and strange concept of time, or has had bad luck or whatever problems, then so be it, I respect that.

I have never lost faith in him, he´s still one of my all time favorite musicians and probably THE most soulful musician these days.

So happy.

Can´t wait to see him in concert again. Glad that he´s still healthy, talented and alive.

God bless him.

Between this album, AOA, the Basement Tapes set, and crazy good Springsteen remasters, the last few months have been fucking stellar.

I don't think Sugah Daddy is that great, tbh. He needed to come back stronger than this.

Musically it's good but his vocals are all over the place, there's no clarity in the vocal production, and I've listened to the song three times now and the vocals just aren't memorable at all.

I'm glad he's back though and I'm sure I'll like a few cuts from the album.

It's okay....sounds very retro-Princey to me. shrug

I'm hoping for some better cuts on the album too.

True..

But, Brown Sugar had several catchy radio friendly tunes/Hits..

Voodoo Less so...

I guess i was asking if the General public is 'ready' for this like Muso's are.

ah. wtf. i still lol. i mean vocal clarity - c'mon. 15 years after voodoo sb should realise that this kind of "unclear" vox are his trademark.

You want a clear understandable hook? Go listen to lenny kravitz...

Prince can do this in 20min? I really don't know, man. Listen to the details in the track... it's pretty complex even it sounds easy.

Prince lost the love for sound and details a lil bit in his latest compositions. I'm glad blast from the past came out with genious tracks like adonis and bathsheba.

When I compare Gold Standard to Sugah Daddy... I'm mean I can feel and hear much difference in chosen sounds and quality of production. Golden Standard sound a lil bit like done in 20min (ok, only Prince is able to do that... haha)... compare it. chose for yourself... i played AOA maybe 3 or 4 times.. and i'm through.... I played Sugah Daddy 10 times today and still can't get enough... don't know.

D' delivers, man. And it's a tribute to one of the most amazing soul funk musicians of all time - Prince. Nobody denies. But i hear sly too and other influences. I mean check the horns. so freaky and experimental ... not that 20 hornplayers in your face stuff...

But, hey, why am I writing this... fuck it. THIS RECORD IS A CHANGER. the rnb soul scene better watch out. I'm sure the rest of the record will be mind blowin...

Eh. Different strokes. I listened to U Know (along with Whitecamps) on repeat when it came out. But comments like this just confirm to me that ya'll didn't get the punchline of Art Official Age. And as for it being a "changer," just listen to it and don't have any other expectations but what it does for you personally. This is how the "hype" of an album 14 years in the making is propagated. Music consumers talk about the "hype." Music lovers just listen to the music and appreciate it.

Fair enough. D'Angelo certainly hasn't been out there invoking the notion of a retuning messiah or anything.

hmm ...Oh, wait.

But we agree on this much: The hype I speak of is certainly far less that of D'Angelo himself than that of fanboys/girls... sooo starved for artists who are truly and consistently covering new musical ground (units sold be damned) that they'll cream over any cat who can dust off an instrument and pluck out three albums of the same rehashed mid-tempo lounge tune or derivative ballad since 1995. confused

But, as you say, different strokes. shrug The single is fair. I'm just waiting to see what else the brother comes with.

D'angelo's vocal layering is so reminiscent of prince's till it's scary! He has learned from the best. I'm sure prince is very honored by it. I mean U can tell he studied them 4 years & perfected them perfectly. I agree. People always complain about how long it has taken him to release new music but D has had issues. I am happy his healthy and getting his life together. People should be rooting for this uniquely talented man instead of kicking him down, meh. Based on the music climate nowadays people should be rooting for him!

To be honest, the new single is a great funk jam. And this funk jam is so damn good, that I would easily buy the album if it was just one epic funk jam. That's how good I think his jams are. I don't care what people say, and I'm not saying this just because I waited 14 years. If he made some wack shit, I would be one of the first to say so. This stuff is HOT. And it's just a little piece of the album. His strength is albums, not standalone tracks.

I think this one's a great teaser track. It swaggers in, completely self-assured, with the sense of pure, stripped-down feel he's always able to summon. But, at the same time, it's sparse and actually kind of subdued, like he doesn't feel obliged to reveal all his cards just yet. I think the album's actually going to be pretty special.

So it will be released at midnight? Does anyone know what timezone they're talking about here, there are a lot of midnights in the world! (I just thought about making some lame pun based off the track from Planet Earth, but can't really be bothered, a new D cd is almost upon us!)
