Does the vanilla-ness of Ed Sheeran offend you?

I've always had a strong loathing for Ed Sheeran and I could never put my finger on why. Is it my deep-rooted gingerism at play (I mean, when did Ron Weasley become popstar material?) or is it simply that his music is so vanilla it should come with its own cone and flake?

Personally I think it's the latter.

Why would anyone be "offended"?? Hmmm? Not sure but then I asked myself why I dislike people like Nicki Minaj or Lil Wayne and my answer was similar to yours. While Ed may be too vanilla for you're liking, these 2 are too "ghetto trash" for mine. So I see your point.

I do not care for his music but let us be honest a market exist for this type of safe and bland music.

This type of stuff has been going on since Pat Boone and I think the music industry likes having a nice safe artist.

I'm home for the holidays right now. And my sister was playing his music in the car. His music was pretty vanilla and straight foreward. But it wasn't incredibly annoying or anything that destroyed my ears. I Wouldn't listen to him by myself or anything. But he's not bad in the background i guess.

He's dull as dishwater.

The Guardian had it right back in 2011 when they said that Sheeran and Adele have ushered in the age of "The New Boring"..... a scene that is totally and utterly middle of the road and inoffensive.

The Ed Sheeran comparison's a bit harsh on vanilla. At least I'd voluntarily have that.

You all know this is a good song though.

If he never writes another song he'll always have this.

I'd hardly blame Adele for making music boring.

Bit harsh.

Regardless, he is original. You can tell its him instantly. I think the material on his first album was stronger, before he felt the need to chase the U.S market with his Pharrell tinged bland RNB vibe.

Tracks like You Need Me on the first album are more rooted in his own UK sound.

Is "ginger-ness" a word? I don't know. Maybe it's because he looks like Rupert Grint, as Ron Weasley in all those 'Harry Potter' movies, all grown-up and getting laid far more than I am. Ed Sheeran just doesn't look like he sounds.

It was often said that the success of James Taylor came out of America reeling from the horrors of Vietnam, political assassinations, the Manson murders, etc, in the Sixties. Maybe Ed Sheeran and his ilk are the balm we've chosen to help us get through our times of ISIS, economic crisis, and deadly police violence! lol One more good reason to stop all of those things, one might say (although I do quite like that song that sounds a bit like Van Morrison). boxed

Ed Sheeran's safe, and the moment he tries to be less-safer, he just looks dull and naive.

For example, Bruno Mars and Jason Mraz both started as acoustic/folk-pounap artists... but then, Bruno went pop cause he had the look, the voice and all the package, unlike Jason who never stepped outta his singer-songwriter thingy. Ed Sheeran just belongs there, I'm sorry to say this but to be a popstar, especially in this age, you have to have the whole package, Ed Sheeran is just too dull, even if his voice is great.

So you have the org going hype on BM but taking hits at Ed Sheeran?

He writes his own stuff, it's good POP he's not trying to copy/bite Prince,Sting or James Brown (Bruno Mars) - he sound's like him - it's Original he plays well, so he's not just a singer!

Don't get it ? - Look at this clip and tell me what's missing he 23 on his second EP?

He may have a POP following but they guy stands ahead of that pack by miles

Taylor Swift has 7 Grammy's? WTF - Ed leaves her for dead!

Alot of "Artist are overrated in the US" big time

WTF kind of taste-cancer am I reading in this thread? confused

Ed? Boring? I'll bet half of you shitting on him have Jack Johnson records in your collections, you want boring, that's it right there. Ed's a songwriter, he writes great music. The dude played MSG with nothing but an acoustic guitar and you could have heard a pin drop from what I've been told. To me, he's one of the most talented and interesting writer/artists out there. I could see Ed being boring if you listen to music with your eyes (and I realize this is a problem here on the Org, but still.) Geez! lol

Replace anti-ginger with anti-black / anti-gay / anti-whatever and tell me you think it would be ok to post a similar comment.

I'm sure you're just "trying to be funny" and it's just a "light hearted bit of banter" but, seriously, grow up or shut up.

He is fairly talented and makes some catchy pop songs.

But like Sam Smith (who is so unbelievably awkward) he needs a makeover or at least a hair stylist

The lyrics, the art work, all the way to the..."what is the problem now black America?" applogy that followed this video and song was shitty.

.

Black America did not get the same appology she issued the Jewish community following her Nazi video.

Instead all they got was- "What is the problem now!? - literally

The most offensive thing about Ed Sheeran is how unoffencive he is. Nothing with him is of any degree challenging or provocative. However he is very good loop pedals doing guitar parts, vocal parts and making a complete beat on the spot without making it seem forced. There's a few out there that I think does this well. Ed Sheeran is one of them. It comes natural to him. I also find some of his lyrics good, and they are relatable to most people. He will never be that shining rock star, but there's definitly room for him in the mainstream. He is a singer songwriter with mass appeal. There's a bunch of young europeans and probably americans also that don't need him to look like a Barbie or Ken. Some Prince fans are extremly superficial. If they're not complaining about the prince fro, they will find something else to complain about. Also when it comes to other artists. Personally I found Ed Sheeran better before Pharrell produced one of his songs. He doesn't fit well with the glossy Hollywood circus. I'm not a big Sheeran fan, but I give him credit for decent songwriter skills, loopig skills, and the fact that he is his own package. He doesn't need a huge team trying to make him something he isn't.

i like him, have bought several of his songs. listen to him often, he's very talented. and i think he looks fine, i don't care what people look like as long as they are talented. remember back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's when some of our favorite artisits didn't exactly look handsome or beautiful, but could sing or make you feel something?
